Jelly bean

Jelly beans are small bean-shaped sugar candies with soft candy shells and thick gel interiors. The confection comes in a wide variety of colors and flavors, and is primarily made of sugar.

History

The Turkish delight, a Turkish dessert made of soft jelly covered in confectioner's powder, was an early precursor to the jelly bean and inspired its gummy interior. However, it is generally thought that jelly beans first surfaced in 1861, when Boston confectioner William Schrafft urged people to send his jelly beans to soldiers during the American Civil War. It was not until July 5, 1905, that jelly beans were mentioned in the Chicago Daily News. The advertisement publicised bulk jelly beans sold by volume for nine cents per pound, according to the book The Century in Food: America's Fads and Favorites. Today, most historians contend that jellybeans were first linked with celebrations of Easter in the United States sometime in the 1930s for their egg-like shape. In politics, jelly beans earned fame as Ronald Reagan claimed them as his favorite treat.

Jelly Belly

Jelly Belly Candy Company, formerly known as Herman Goelitz Candy Company and Goelitz Confectionery Company, manufactures Jelly Belly jelly beans and other candy. The company is based in Fairfield, California, with a second manufacturing facility in North Chicago, Illinois and a distribution center in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. In October 2008 the company opened a 50,000 sq ft (4,645 m²) manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand where it produces confectionery for the international market.

History

1898–1910

Jelly Belly Candy Company, manufacturer of Jelly Belly jelly beans and a wide range of confections, is a family owned and operated business now in its sixth generation of candy making. The family traces its roots to Gustav Goelitz, who came to the United States in 1866. He built a successful confectionery business: Gustav Goelitz Candy, in Belleville, Illinois. Gustav Goelitz younger brothers, Albert and George, emigrated to America a few years later joining the family business. The Goelitz name developed a reputation for quality confections as the brothers expanded operations and by 1898 were specializing in candy corn and other “buttercream” candies, a new type of candy. The second generation of candy makers moved to North Chicago opening the Goelitz Confectionery Company plant in 1913.

PAW Patrol

PAW Patrol is a Canadian animated television series created by Keith Chapman. The series first aired on August 12, 2013, on Nickelodeon in the United States and in Canada on TVOKids on August 27, 2013. The series is produced by Spin Master Entertainment in association with TVOKids and Nickelodeon, with animation provided by Guru Studio. On November 14, 2013, Nickelodeon announced that PAW Patrol had been renewed for a second season, which began airing on August 13, 2014. On June 9, 2015, Nickelodeon announced that PAW Patrol had been renewed for a third season, which began airing on November 20, 2015.

Plot

A tech-savvy boy named Ryder leads a pack of seven dogs: Marshall, Rubble, Chase, Rocky, Zuma, Skye and Everest (the last of which was added to the team in season two). With a unique blend of stunts, pop culture references and lots of child-friendly humor, the PAW Patrol works together on high-stakes rescue missions to protect the city of Adventure Bay. Their most frequent caller is a fisherman named Cap'n Turbot, who knows a lot about the ocean and loves hanging out with the pups.
