A few years ago, I made myself a magic wand for a Harry Potter costume party. I only just now figured out how to make it work. My attempt at the Incendio (fire summoning) charm.

After making wands for me and my wife, I wanted to make one for my daughter so that we would have a complete set. We looked online for ideas, and once she settled on a design I turned the wand from a piece of mahogany. My wand and my wife's wand both feature carved elements, but my daughter wanted something a little different. I engraved the swirl pattern into the handle and then painted the swirls with gold enamel paint.
The wand measures 14 inches long, and is finished with Danish Oil.
This is the first time I've tried recording myself using the lathe, and in hindsight I should have known that the camera location wasn't great. Live and learn.
I enjoy making wands, and I wanted to have a little fun at the end of the video. It's nothing special - just playing around in After Effects. Although now I have some ideas for other projects.
Now that the wands are done, I plan to make a small display stand to hang on the wall.

A wand (also: magic wand) is a thin, straight, hand-held stick of wood, stone, ivory, or metal. Generally, in modern language, wands are ceremonial and/or have associations with magic but there have been other uses, all stemming from the original meaning as a synonym of rod and virge, both of which had a similar development.

My (Working) Magic Wand
A few years ago, I made myself a magic wand for a Harry Potter costume party. I only just now figured out how to make it work. My attempt at the Incendio (fire summoning) charm. Background Music: "Diagon Alley" from the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. -

My Daughter's Wand
After making wands for me and my wife, I wanted to make one for my daughter so that we would have a complete set. We looked online for ideas, and once she settled on a design I turned the wand from a piece of mahogany. My wand and my wife's wand both feature carved elements, but my daughter wanted something a little different. I engraved the swirl pattern into the handle and then painted the swirls with gold enamel paint. The wand measures 14 inches long, and is finished with Danish Oil. This is the first time I've tried recording myself using the lathe, and in hindsight I should have known that the camera location wasn't great. Live and learn. I enjoy making wands, and I wanted to have a little fun at the end of the video. It's nothing special - just playing around in After Effect... -

This is the first time I've tried recording myself using the lathe, and in hindsight I should have known that the camera location wasn't great. Live and learn.
I enjoy making wands, and I wanted to have a little fun at the end of the video. It's nothing special - just playing around in After Effects. Although now I have some ideas for other projects.
Now that the wands are done, I plan to make a small display stand to hang on the wall.

After making wands for me and my wife, I wanted to make one for my daughter so that we would have a complete set. We looked online for ideas, and once she settled on a design I turned the wand from a piece of mahogany. My wand and my wife's wand both feature carved elements, but my daughter wanted something a little different. I engraved the swirl pattern into the handle and then painted the swirls with gold enamel paint.
The wand measures 14 inches long, and is finished with Danish Oil.
This is the first time I've tried recording myself using the lathe, and in hindsight I should have known that the camera location wasn't great. Live and learn.
I enjoy making wands, and I wanted to have a little fun at the end of the video. It's nothing special - just playing around in After Effects. Although now I have some ideas for other projects.
Now that the wands are done, I plan to make a small display stand to hang on the wall.
