Charles Jeffaries Stayt (born 19 June 1962) is a British journalist and presenter, currently working freelance with the BBC as a presenter of BBC Breakfast.
Stayt was born in 1962 in Gloucester in Gloucestershire, in the West of England. He says he was a "late starter as a journalist", but that his years spent working as a roofer, a roadie and a barman were not entirely wasted.
Stayt was educated at Wycliffe College, a co-educational part-boarding independent school in the town of Stonehouse (near the market town of Stroud) in Gloucestershire, in the West of England, followed by Birmingham Polytechnic in the city of Birmingham, in the West Midlands region of Central England.
Stayt started his career in commercial radio in his home town of Gloucester.
Before moving into television, Stayt worked in radio, hosting Capital Radio's award winning news programme The Way It Is, and also reported for LBC and BBC Radio 5 Live. From January 2008 he has been the weekend presenter for BBC Breakfast, the early morning news programme broadcast on BBC One and BBC News. He also continues to occasionally present relief shifts on BBC News.
