About the Video
On my second day in Zhangye China, I headed out of town to one of the most spectacular sights in all of Asia. The mountains are a Danxia Landform and the locals like to call them the Rainbow Mountains.
China's Rainbow Mountains live up to the billing, although if you've seen the images elsewhere you know that they were 1) photoshopped pretty hard, and 2) shot at a time of year where there was far more green. When I made it to the Danxia Rainbow Mountains, the scene was pretty yellow and orange because the dry season had already kicked in.
Anyways, this episode is the "getting the shot" variety which means that I take you through the process of getting an image from start to finish. This is a fairly simple landscape image so there's nothing that's overly complicated about it. In the end, I show off two images from the Danxia Landform Mountains and show you how I edited them using Lightroom 5.

"China's Rainbow Mountains"
The Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park (Chinese: 张掖丹霞国家地质公园), also known as Zhangye Danxia (Landform) Geopark, is located near the city of Zhangye in China's northwestern Gansu province.
It covers an area of 510 square kilometres (200 sq mi). Formerly a provincial park and scenic area, it became a national geopark in November 2011.
The park is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains, in the counties of Linze and Sunan, which are under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Zhangye, Gansu province, China.

I was really lucky to be able to recover this footage - this is a place that foreigners rarely visit, so I REALLY wanted to show you!
The Mati Temple Scenic Area, also named Horse's Hoof Temple, is a distinguished scenic spot integrating grottoes, the scenery of the Qilian Mountain, and Yugur local customs, lying in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Zhangye City.
Legend about the Horse's Hoof Temple goes that a Chinese Pegasus landed here, leaving a huge horseshoe imprint that can still be seen within the Mati Hall in the temple. Thus the temple got the name “Horse's Hoof Temple”.
Mati Temple boasts more than 70 caves and shrines. These grottoes are arranged in the form of a pagoda, with Buddhist halls inside and corridors outside. The total number of caves and shrines both inside and outside is up to 49, all of which are of unique designs. The surroundings of Mati Temple are very beautiful, and the verdant hills, green waters, unusual peaks and peculiar caves are the most famous things of Mati Temple.
The Mati Temple Scenic Area consists of mountains, grasslands, pine forests, and a range of temples. Around the main temple there are winding passageways, caves, and well-organized stairwells.
Besides, the Mati Temple Scenic Area is distinguished for the Yugur People, which is a unique minority group in Gansu Province, living at the foot of the snow-covered Qilian Mountain in the southern part of Zhangye for several generations. The Yugur people are fa¬mous for their folk songs, dances, tents, costumes, food and culture. Studies show that the Yugur people may be descendants of the Xiongnu people, an ancient nomadic people in China who roved about on the highland meadow at the foot of Qilian Mountain for good water resources and lush grassland.
In the Mati Temple Scenic Area, tourists can enjoy the scenery of Qilian Mountain and the vast grassland. It is also possible to stay in a Yugu minority tent, where you can drink chang (Tibetan wine, made of barley) presented by Yugur girls, sample the traditional "hand eaten lamb", accept hada (a silk scarf used as a greeting gift), and appreciate folk songs to know more about nomads lifestyle. Horseriding can be tried, which makes you experience unique customs of the Yugur in Zhangye.

The mountains stretch for about 300 square kilometers, a scenario worthy of a fantasy world, I would say surreal colors of the rocks. The area has low rainfall and is located near the Gobi desert. The colors are amazing in their variety the result of subsequent deposits of various minerals of different pigmentation.

The Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye Danxia in Gansu was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.
The rainbow mountains became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

Visited n sight seeing to the Rainbow Mountains on 7th Sept 2015 - left hotel at 4.45am and arrived at the site at 5.40am - and it was raining hence we were unable to watch the sunrise. The Park was only opened at 6.30am and was still raining slightly.
all pics taken are NOT edited - all pics were captured by using handphones hence color quality were not as expected. Actually watching and seeing these landforms LIVE is far breath taking than captured on these pics.

TIPS FROM THE TOUR GUIDE:
The Best Time to Visit Colorful Zhangye Danxia: is from June to September when the weather is comfortable, and the combination of strong sun and a little rain brings out the colors more. The rest of the year is very dry. Zhangye is well below freezing and windy in winter — not recommended.
It is best to visit in the morning and at dusk, especially at sunset, when the colors change continuously, showing yellow and red layers covered by a light gray layer.
The rocky bands are well defined with colorful stripes, and, if it rains the day before, this color will be more gorgeous.
Try not to go when it is cloudy or raining, as only when there is sunshine will these mountains show you their gorgeous colors.

The Zhangye Danxia Landscape — Red Rocks and Rainbow Ridges.
Zhangye's Danxia landscape has lots of precipitous red cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high, and multicolored ridges of weathered strata, sometimes stretching to the horizon. These formations, sometimes smooth sometimes sharp, stand out against the greens or grays of the plains , looking grand and magnificent, vigorous and virile.

There are sightseeing cars available within the national park, where other tourist buses are not allowed to go. The distance between the four viewing platforms is around eight kilometers (5 miles), and it takes about 2 hours to finish the whole trip when taking the sightseeing cars.
The first viewing platform is the nearest and best viewing platform, 10 minutes’ walk from the entrance.
The second viewing platform has it s base about 10 minutes’ walk from the premier viewing platform, but it takes a lot of effort to get to the top. Being the highest viewing platform, with 666 steps, which require about 30 minutes’ climbing, a panorama of the scenic area can be enjoyed.
The third viewing platform allows a view of the famous 'seven-color fan'.
The fourth viewing platform is the largest viewing platform. It is on a ridge which runs from east to west. Standing on the ridge and looking south you can feast your eyes on the variegated colors of Qicai Shan (七彩山 /chee-tseye shan/ 'Seven-Color Mountain'). It is the perfect place for catching pictures of a sunrise or sunset.

Zhangye is in the center of the Hexi Corridor. The area was the frontier for much of China's history, forming a natural passage to the Central Asian portion of the empire. In fact, the name Zhangye (lit. "to extend the arm") is an abbreviation of 张国臂掖，以通西域 (lit. To extend the arm of the country, through to the Western Realm. During the Western Han dynasty, Chinese armies were often engaged against the Xiongnu in this area. It was also an important section of the Silk Road. The fearsome Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan is said to have been born in the Dafo temple, also the site of the longest reclining wooden Bhudda in China.
The city was formerly known as Ganzhou (甘州), a name retained both in the municipal region seat Ganzhou District and the Gan of the province of Gansu. In The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo describes spending a year in a city called Campichu, which has been identified with Ganzhou (Zhangye).

The Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye Danxia in Gansu was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance. Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls. The rainbow mountains became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. ******* Visited n sight seeing to the Rainbow Mountains on 7th Sept 2015 - left hotel at 4.45am and arrived at the site at 5.40am - and it was raining hence we were unable to watch the sunrise. The Park was only opened at 6.30am and was still raining slightly. all pics taken are NOT edited - all pics were captured by using handphones hence color quality were not as expected. (Ar-Rahmaan 55:25) Ayat ini di ulang beberapa kali dlm surah Ar-Rahman. **** TIPS FROM THE TOUR GUIDE: The Best Time to Visit Colorful Zhangye Danxia: is from June to September when the weather is comfortable, and the combination of strong sun and a little rain brings out the colors more. The rest of the year is very dry. Zhangye is well below freezing and windy in winter — not recommended. It is best to visit in the morning and at dusk, especially at sunset, when the colors change continuously, showing yellow and red layers covered by a light gray layer. The rocky bands are well defined with colorful stripes, and, if it rains the day before, this color will be more gorgeous. Try not to go when it is cloudy or raining, as only when there is sunshine will these mountains show you their gorgeous colors. -

The Zhangye Danxia Landscape — Red Rocks and Rainbow Ridges. Zhangye's Danxia landscape has lots of precipitous red cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high, and multicolored ridges of weathered strata, sometimes stretching to the horizon. These formations, sometimes smooth sometimes sharp, stand out against the greens or grays of the plains , looking grand and magnificent, vigorous and virile. Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance. Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls. The Danxia national park is located close to the city of Zhangye — about 30 minutes west by car, in northwestern China’s Gansu Province. There are sightseeing cars available within the national park, where other tourist buses are not allowed to go. The distance between the four viewing platforms is around eight kilometers (5 miles), and it takes about 2 hours to finish the whole trip when taking the sightseeing cars. The first viewing platform is the nearest and best viewing platform, 10 minutes’ walk from the entrance. The second viewing platform has it s base about 10 minutes’ walk from the premier viewing platform, but it takes a lot of effort to get to the top. Being the highest viewing platform, with 666 steps, which require about 30 minutes’ climbing, a panorama of the scenic area can be enjoyed. The third viewing platform allows a view of the famous 'seven-color fan'. The fourth viewing platform is the largest viewing platform. It is on a ridge which runs from east to west. Standing on the ridge and looking south you can feast your eyes on the variegated colors of Qicai Shan (七彩山 /chee-tseye shan/ 'Seven-Color Mountain'). It is the perfect place for catching pictures of a sunrise or sunset.

I was really lucky to be able to recover this footage - this is a place that foreigners rarely visit, so I REALLY wanted to show you! The Mati Temple Scenic Area, also named Horse's Hoof Temple, is a distinguished scenic spot integrating grottoes, the scenery of the Qilian Mountain, and Yugur local customs, lying in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Zhangye City. Legend about the Horse's Hoof Temple goes that a Chinese Pegasus landed here, leaving a huge horseshoe imprint that can still be seen within the Mati Hall in the temple. Thus the temple got the name “Horse's Hoof Temple”. Mati Temple boasts more than 70 caves and shrines. The Mati Temple Scenic Area, also named Horse's Hoof Temple, is a distinguished scenic spot integrating grottoes, the scenery of the Qilian Mountain, and Yugur local customs, lying in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Zhangye City.
Legend about the Horse's Hoof Temple goes that a Chinese Pegasus landed here, leaving a huge horseshoe imprint that can still be seen within the Mati Hall in the temple. Thus the temple got the name “Horse's Hoof Temple”.
Mati Temple boasts more than 70 caves and shrines. These grottoes are arranged in the form of a pagoda, with Buddhist halls inside and corridors outside. The total number of caves and shrines both inside and outside is up to 49, all of which are of unique designs. The surroundings of Mati Temple are very beautiful, and the verdant hills, green waters, unusual peaks and peculiar caves are the most famous things of Mati Temple.
The Mati Temple Scenic Area consists of mountains, grasslands, pine forests, and a range of temples. Around the main temple there are winding passageways, caves, and well-organized stairwells.
Besides, the Mati Temple Scenic Area is distinguished for the Yugur People, which is a unique minority group in Gansu Province, living at the foot of the snow-covered Qilian Mountain in the southern part of Zhangye for several generations. The Yugur people are fa¬mous for their folk songs, dances, tents, costumes, food and culture. Studies show that the Yugur people may be descendants of the Xiongnu people, an ancient nomadic people in China who roved about on the highland meadow at the foot of Qilian Mountain for good water resources and lush grassland.
In the Mati Temple Scenic Area, tourists can enjoy the scenery of Qilian Mountain and the vast grassland. It is also possible to stay in a Yugu minority tent, where you can drink chang (Tibetan wine, made of barley) presented by Yugur girls, sample the traditional "hand eaten lamb", accept hada (a silk scarf used as a greeting gift), and appreciate folk songs to know more about nomads lifestyle. Horseriding can be tried, which makes you experience unique customs of the Yugur in Zhangye.

The Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye Danxia in Gansu was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.
The rainbow mountains became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

Visited n sight seeing to the Rainbow Mountains on 7th Sept 2015 - left hotel at 4.45am and arrived at the site at 5.40am - and it was raining hence we were unable to watch the sunrise. The Park was only opened at 6.30am and was still raining slightly.

TIPS FROM THE TOUR GUIDE:
The Best Time to Visit Colorful Zhangye Danxia: is from June to September when the weather is comfortable, and the combination of strong sun and a little rain brings out the colors more. The rest of the year is very dry. Zhangye is well below freezing and windy in winter — not recommended.
It is best to visit in the morning and at dusk, especially at sunset, when the colors change continuously, showing yellow and red layers covered by a light gray layer.
The rocky bands are well defined with colorful stripes, and, if it rains the day before, this color will be more gorgeous.
Try not to go when it is cloudy or raining, as only when there is sunshine will these mountains show you their gorgeous colors.

These formations, sometimes smooth sometimes sharp, stand out against the greens or grays of the plains , looking grand and magnificent, vigorous and virile.
Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.
The Danxia national park is located close to the city of Zhangye — about 30 minutes west by car, in northwestern China’s Gansu Province.
There are sightseeing cars available within the national park, where other tourist buses are not allowed to go. The distance between the four viewing platforms is around eight kilometers (5 miles), and it takes about 2 hours to finish the whole trip when taking the sightseeing cars.
The first viewing platform is the nearest and best viewing platform, 10 minutes’ walk from the entrance.
The second viewing platform has it s base about 10 minutes’ walk from the premier viewing platform, but it takes a lot of effort to get to the top. Being the highest viewing platform, with 666 steps, which require about 30 minutes’ climbing, a panorama of the scenic area can be enjoyed.
The third viewing platform allows a view of the famous 'seven-color fan'.
The fourth viewing platform is the largest viewing platform. It is on a ridge which runs from east to west. Standing on the ridge and looking south you can feast your eyes on the variegated colors of Qicai Shan (七彩山 /chee-tseye shan/ 'Seven-Color Mountain'). It is the perfect place for catching pictures of a sunrise or sunset.
