Fela Kuti (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti; 15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), also known as Fela Anikulapo Kuti or simply Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick.
Fela was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on 15 October 1938 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria into an upper-middle-class family. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a feminist activist in the anti-colonial movement; his father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, a Protestant minister and school principal, was the first president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers. His brothers, Beko Ransome-Kuti and Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, both medical doctors, are well known in Nigeria. Fela was a first cousin to the Nigerian writer and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, the first African to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
He attended the Abeokuta Grammar School in Abeokuta and later he was sent to London in 1958 to study medicine but decided to study music instead at the Trinity College of Music, the trumpet being his preferred instrument. While there, he formed the band Koola Lobitos, playing a fusion of jazz and highlife. In 1960, Fela married his first wife, Remilekun (Remi) Taylor, with whom he would have three children (Femi, Yeni, and Sola). In 1963, Fela moved back to Nigeria, re-formed Koola Lobitos and trained as a radio producer for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. He played for some time with Victor Olaiya and his All Stars.
Roy Ayers (born September 10, 1940) is an American funk, soul, and jazz composer and vibraphone player. Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk. He is a key figure in the acid jazz movement, which is a mixture of jazz into hip-hop and funk, and has been dubbed by many as "The Godfather of Neo Soul". He is most well known for his signature compositions "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" and "Searchin". and is also famous for having more sampled hits by rappers than any other artist.
Ayers was born in Los Angeles, and grew up in a musical family, where his father played trombone and his mother played piano. At the age of five, he was given his first pair of vibraphone mallets by Lionel Hampton. The area of Los Angeles that Ayers grew up in, now known as "South Central" but then known as "South Park", was the epicenter of the Southern California Black music scene. The schools he attended (Wadsworth Elementary, Nevins Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School) were all close to the famed Central Avenue, Los Angeles' equivalent of Harlem's Lenox Avenue and Chicago's State Street. Roy would likely have been exposed to music as it not only emanated from the many nightclubs and bars in the area, but also poured out of many of the homes where the musicians who kept the scene alive lived in and around Central. During high school, Ayers sang in the church choir and fronted a band named The Latin Lyrics, in which he played steel guitar and piano. His high school, Thomas Jefferson High School, produced some of the most talented new musicians, such as Dexter Gordon.
"Be Free" is the sixth single released by Mexican singer Belinda, taken from her debut album Belinda.
It reached an unexpected #3 in Mexico, #62 in Slovenia and #99 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Belinda was the first Mexican artist who released a song in English and entered the Yugoslav charts. This song was written mostly to introduce Belinda to an English speaking audience, but the attempt failed; however she later achieved this by later starring in the Disney Channel original movie The Cheetah Girls 2.

This song was a collaboration of sorts, between Roy Ayers and Fela Anikulapo Kuti. BLACK FAMILY first appeared on the Roy Ayers album called LOTS OF LOVE in 1983. He released the album on his UNO MELODIC label. This album is very hard to track down, however it was re-released in the late 80's on an album called "Drive", and again in 2005 on the Roy Ayers compilation disc called "My Vibes" the best of the Uno Melodic Years. Basically, A re-issue of "Lots of Love", with eight un-released cuts. (This is where I got this copy from) The track Black Family, was written by Roy Ayers and Dwayne Perdue (of the B B Q's). You can hear that it is done in the typical Fela Afro beat style. There is a definite link here to the song that he and Fela collaborated on in 1980. Fela first released ...

The musical style of Felá is called afrobeat, a style he largely created, which is a complex fusion of Jazz, Funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native "tinker pan" African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masekela, under the ...

Fela Kuti interview subtitled. I made this edit for my high school students in Los Angeles. I subtitled the video so that they would clearly understand what he is saying. I first heard Fela as a young teenager and learned a lot from his songs. In this song Fela is being Sarcastic of the Democracy (new Christianity) which Europeans (U.S.A) use to justify their continued colonialism just as they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also changed the word F--- and narrowed the image as to not show the cigarette so that I can show it in school. Thank you for all you comments
Fela Kuti was the main figure in Nigerian populair music. He has been in prison and tortured several times because of his criticism of the Nigerian government and the sell-out of African wisdom and religion, due to Evangelical and Christian missionary activities. Africans got their own Religion which is not inferior to Christianity and Islam. In his songs he criticised corruption and the exploitation of Africa by Multinationals like ITT.
