Opening next week in theaters is writer Steven Knight and director Ed Zwick‘s great new movie Pawn Sacrifice. Tobey Maguire stars as the gifted, yet troubled chess- prodigy Bobby Fischer who takes part in “The Match of the Century,” the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Fisher and the USSR champ, Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). While it’s hard to believe it now, the ’72 match was the biggest story of the year and it was watched by millions of people and it captured the imagination of the world. At the Los Angeles press day I sat down with director Edward Zwick for an extended video interview. He talked about why he wanted to make the film, his first cut compared to the finished film, Maguire’s involvement in post-production, his one or two projects that are “the ones that got away”, an alternate cut of Glory (which removed the first two reels of the film), Jack Reacher 2, and so much more. Here’s what he had to say:

Edward M. Zwick (born October 8, 1952) is an American filmmaker and film producer noted for his epic films about social and racial issues. He has been described as a "throwback to an earlier era, an extremely cerebral director whose movies consistently feature fully rounded characters, difficult moral issues, and plots that thrive on the ambiguity of authority."
Zwick was born into a Jewish family in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ruth Ellen (née Reich) and Allen Zwick. He received an A.B from Harvard in 1974. He attended the AFI Conservatory and graduated with an M.F.A. degree in 1975.
His films include Glory (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), The Siege (1998), The Last Samurai (2003), Blood Diamond (2006), and Defiance (2008). Along with Marshall Herskovitz, Zwick runs a film production company called The Bedford Falls Company (inspired by the name of the town featured in Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life). This company has produced such notable films as Traffic and Shakespeare in Love and the TV shows Thirtysomething, Relativity, Once and Again, and My So-Called Life.

Serling notices inconsistencies between the testimonies of Walden's crew. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Medina attack or two other attacks in the kingdom on the same day — one near the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah and the other at a Shiite mosque in the east of the country. The bomber has been identified as 34-year-old Abdullah Qalzar Khan, an Interior Ministry statement said.
