This small mansion was built for Dr. Roland Lee Rosson and his wife Flora Murray. Dr. Rosson had come to Phoenix by 1880 as a youthful 28 year-old doctor and surgeon, though in a town as small as Phoenix was then there would have been very few surgeries to perform. By 1892 Rosson had embarked on a political career and was the county treasurer and "ex-officio tax collector". The exact date for the construction of the house is between October 1894 and March 1895; the 1892 city directory indicates that a house was already standing, with Dr. Rosson residing at the corner of Tonto (now 6th Street) and Monroe. This record may have been their previous adobe house shown on the 1885 "Birds Eye View" map sketch by C.J.Dyer. Shortly after the completion of the house, Dr. Rosson was elected mayor of Phoenix. Purportedly, his grand house was thought to have influenced his victory.

The Rosson house was built with such modern accommodations as "the electric light", hot and cold running water, and indoor upstairs bathroom, and a telephone. Other contemporary Victorian mansions on Monroe were similarly equipped - by 1892, Phoenix boasted electrical plants, a domestic water system, a gas system, and two competing telephone companies. The Phoenix street-car line ran down Monroe before turning north on Seventh Street, so the Rossons and other Monroe Street residents had only to walk out to board it.
Whitelaw Reid, publisher of the New York Tribune and former U.S. Ambassador to France, rented this house for two winters from the Rossons when his doctors informed him that the dry climate could help with his respiratory problems. His pen and ink set was donated to the Rosson house after his death and can be found on display. It is from Whitelaw Reid's letters and correspondence about the house that so much about its history is known. Without these letters it would have been difficult to restore the house with such accuracy. The Rosson House had gone through phases of being a mansion, a rental house, a boarding house, and then a "flophouse" before it was bought by the city of Phoenix for restoration, and a good deal of its character was obscured. For example, one owner had built on a small wooden room adjacent to the second story of the octagonal tower; this addition was removed in the early stages of the restoration.

Yet another monster classic piece of Northern Soul that we filmed for our documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Alfie was the protege of classic record producer Reid Whitelaw, and first had a classic early 1970s disco song on RCA called "Who Is Gonna Love Me", which we used to play at Blackpool Mecca. In the mid 1970s. Alfie then released a wonderful piece of retro magic, which, although recorded in the 1970s, was more like the Sixties in style, called "Love Is A Serious Business" on Mercury Records, which is astonishingly rare and hard to find, especially considering that it is on a major label. I have known Reid Whitelaw for many many years, and asked him to find Alfie for me, which he did, and we filmed this in a cold February on the streets of Brooklyn. Alfie had never actually performed this song before, and this is the only time you can ever see him do this classic.

According to letters in his Presidential library, President Roosevelt enjoyed Prince Henry of Prussia's visit but the experience changed his mind regarding sending Alice to the coronation of King Edward VII of Great Britain. Alice will not be traveling to England but Roosevelt thanks the Whitelaw Reid and his wife for their offer of hospitality.
Roosevelt enjoyed the quiet, personal time with Prince Henry of Prussia and was pleased to meet Alfred von Tirpitz, Secretary of the German Navy.

Swedish duo with a fun version of a song that was recorded in the US by Ralph Carter on Mercury. German Polydor also released another version of the song, by French singer, Michel Chevalier
Sven & Charlotte were Swedish based Svenne and Lotta Hedlund.
Svenne had been in the Swedish group, the Hep Stars with Benny Andersson (later of Abba) and met Charlotte when she was touring Europe with the Sherrys, the group that had the #35 US hit with “Pop Pop Pop-Pie” in 1962. At one time, the Hep Stars comprised, Sven, Charlotte, Benny and Björn Ulvaeus. The latter two eventually left and formed Abba with Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog but Benny and Björn continued to write for and produce tracks for Sven & Charlotte.
The duo’s 1976 album, “Letters”, released on Sweden’s Polar Muisc label (owned by Abba manager, Stig Anderson) contained two Benny and Björn songs as well as “Extra, Extra” and some more covers of US songs. “Extra, Extra” was released as a 45 in Germany, the UK and a few other European countries.
Norman Bergen and Reid Whitelaw also produced the Moment Of Truth’s “Helplessly” the previous year. Individually they enjoyed various successes in the music business. Reid wrote “Goody Goody Gumdrops” for the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and “We’ll Meet In The Yellow Forest” for Jay & The Americans. Norman was an arranger for the Tokens, the Happenings, Astrud Gilberto and Dawn, among others.

Whitelaw Reid (October 27, 1837 – December 15, 1912) was a U.S. politician and newspaper editor, as well as the author of a popular history of Ohio in the Civil War.
Born James Whitelaw Reid on a farm near Xenia, Ohio, Reid attended Xenia Academy and went on to graduate from Miami University with honors in 1856. At Miami, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon (Kappa chapter), and lobbied for the expulsion of the six members who ultimately founded Sigma Chi.
He was the longtime editor of the New York Tribune and a close friend of Horace Greeley. He was a leader of the Liberal Republican movement in 1872.
A Republican, he had an illustrious career as a diplomat, serving as United States Ambassador to France from 1889 to 1892, and as U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James's from 1905 to 1912.
In 1892, Reid became the Republican vice presidential nominee when President Benjamin Harrison chose to drop Vice President Levi P. Morton from the ticket. Harrison and Reid lost to the Democratic ticket of Grover Cleveland and Adlai Stevenson, as Cleveland became the first former president to recapture the office.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is most noted for his novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel."
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He apprenticed with a printer. He also worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", which became very popular and brought nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received. Twain had found his calling.
He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (
/ˈroʊzəvɛlt/ ROH-zə-velt; October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919) was the 26th President of the United States of America (1901–1909). He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his "cowboy" persona and robust masculinity. He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive ("Bull Moose") Party of 1912. Before becoming President, he held offices at the city, state, and federal levels. Roosevelt's achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. Roosevelt was 42 years old when sworn in as President of the United States in 1901, making him the youngest president ever; he beat out the youngest elected president, John F. Kennedy, by only one year. Roosevelt was also one of only three sitting presidents to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the other two being Woodrow Wilson and Barack Obama.

Written by Reid Whitelaw and Norman Bergen. Produced by Michael Tretow Swedish duo with a fun version of a song that was recorded in the US by Ralph Carter on Mercury. German Polydor also released another version of the song, by French singer, Michel Chevalier Sven & Charlotte were Swedish based Svenne and Lotta Hedlund. Svenne had been in the Swedish group, the Hep Stars with Benny Andersson (later of Abba) and met Charlotte when she was touring Europe with the Sherrys, the group that had the #35 US hit with “Pop Pop Pop-Pie” in 1962. At one time, the Hep Stars comprised, Sven, Charlotte, Benny and Björn Ulvaeus. The latter two eventually left and formed Abba with Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog but Benny and Björn continued to write for and produce tracks for Sven & Charlotte. The duo’s 1976 album, “Letters”, released on Sweden’s Polar Muisc label (owned by Abba manager, Stig Anderson) contained two Benny and Björn songs as well as “Extra, Extra” and some more covers of US songs. “Extra, Extra” was released as a 45 in Germany, the UK and a few other European countries. Norman Bergen and Reid Whitelaw also produced the Moment Of Truth’s “Helplessly” the previous year. Individually they enjoyed various successes in the music business. Reid wrote “Goody Goody Gumdrops” for the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and “We’ll Meet In The Yellow Forest” for Jay & The Americans. Norman was an arranger for the Tokens, the Happenings, Astrud Gilberto and Dawn, among others.

Alfie Davison - Love Is A Serious Business
Yet another monster classic piece of Northern Soul that we filmed for our documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Alfie was the protege of classic record producer Reid Whitelaw, and first had a classic early 1970s disco song on RCA called "Who Is Gonna Love Me", which we used to play at Blackpool Mecca. In the mid 1970s. Alfie then released a wonderful piece of retro magic, which, although recorded in the 1970s, was more like the Sixties in style, called "Love Is A Serious Business" on Mercury Records, which is astonishingly rare and hard to find, especially considering that it is on a major label. According to letters in his Presidential library, President Roosevelt enjoyed Prince Henry of Prussia's visit but the experience changed his mind regarding sending Alice to the coronation of King Edward VII of Great Britain. Alice will not be traveling to England but Roosevelt thanks the Whitelaw Reid and his wife for their offer of hospitality. Roosevelt enjoyed the quiet, personal time with Prince Henry of Prussia and was pleased to meet Alfred von Tirpitz, Secretary of the German Navy. -

This record may have been their previous adobe house shown on the 1885 "Birds Eye View" map sketch by C.J.Dyer. Shortly after the completion of the house, Dr. Rosson was elected mayor of Phoenix. Purportedly, his grand house was thought to have influenced his victory.

The Rosson house was built with such modern accommodations as "the electric light", hot and cold running water, and indoor upstairs bathroom, and a telephone. Other contemporary Victorian mansions on Monroe were similarly equipped - by 1892, Phoenix boasted electrical plants, a domestic water system, a gas system, and two competing telephone companies. The Phoenix street-car line ran down Monroe before turning north on Seventh Street, so the Rossons and other Monroe Street residents had only to walk out to board it.
Whitelaw Reid, publisher of the New York Tribune and former U.S. Ambassador to France, rented this house for two winters from the Rossons when his doctors informed him that the dry climate could help with his respiratory problems. His pen and ink set was donated to the Rosson house after his death and can be found on display. It is from Whitelaw Reid's letters and correspondence about the house that so much about its history is known. Without these letters it would have been difficult to restore the house with such accuracy. The Rosson House had gone through phases of being a mansion, a rental house, a boarding house, and then a "flophouse" before it was bought by the city of Phoenix for restoration, and a good deal of its character was obscured. For example, one owner had built on a small wooden room adjacent to the second story of the octagonal tower; this addition was removed in the early stages of the restoration.

It is from Whitelaw Reid's letters and correspondence about the house that so much about its history is known. Without these letters it would have been difficult to restore the house with such accuracy. The Rosson House had gone through phases of being a mansion, a rental house, a boarding house, and then a "flophouse" before it was bought by the city of Phoenix for restoration, and a good deal of its character was obscured. For example, one owner had built on a small wooden room adjacent to the second story of the octagonal tower; this addition was removed in the early stages of the restoration.

Yet another monster classic piece of Northern Soul that we filmed for our documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Alfie was the protege of classic record producer Reid Whitelaw, and first had a classic early 1970s disco song on RCA called "Who Is Gonna Love Me", which we used to play at Blackpool Mecca. In the mid 1970s. Alfie then released a wonderful piece of retro magic, which, although recorded in the 1970s, was more like the Sixties in style, called "Love Is A Serious Business" on Mercury Records, which is astonishingly rare and hard to find, especially considering that it is on a major label. I have known Reid Whitelaw for many many years, and asked him to find Alfie for me, which he did, and we filmed this in a cold February on the streets of Brooklyn. Alfie had never actually performed this song before, and this is the only time you can ever see him do this classic.

Sven & Charlotte were Swedish based Svenne and Lotta Hedlund.
Svenne had been in the Swedish group, the Hep Stars with Benny Andersson (later of Abba) and met Charlotte when she was touring Europe with the Sherrys, the group that had the #35 US hit with “Pop Pop Pop-Pie” in 1962. At one time, the Hep Stars comprised, Sven, Charlotte, Benny and Björn Ulvaeus. The latter two eventually left and formed Abba with Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog but Benny and Björn continued to write for and produce tracks for Sven & Charlotte.
The duo’s 1976 album, “Letters”, released on Sweden’s Polar Muisc label (owned by Abba manager, Stig Anderson) contained two Benny and Björn songs as well as “Extra, Extra” and some more covers of US songs. “Extra, Extra” was released as a 45 in Germany, the UK and a few other European countries.
Norman Bergen and Reid Whitelaw also produced the Moment Of Truth’s “Helplessly” the previous year. Individually they enjoyed various successes in the music business. Reid wrote “Goody Goody Gumdrops” for the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and “We’ll Meet In The Yellow Forest” for Jay & The Americans. Norman was an arranger for the Tokens, the Happenings, Astrud Gilberto and Dawn, among others.

Featuring scripts by Colin Welland (his BAFTA-winning Say Goodnight to Your Grandma), Ian Kennedy-Martin, Fay Weldon (as Laurence Wells), Roy Clarke and Brendan Behans brother Dominic, the plays feature key performances from accomplished television actors including Tom Bell, Billie Whitelaw, Richard Beckinsale, Peter Barkworth, Rita Tushingham and Beryl Reid.

Lancé en 1945 par Bérard et Cocteau mais surtout par son décor de "La Grotte enchantée" pour Le Théâtre de la Mode exposé à Paris et à Londres, André Beaurepaire, en 1946 a 21 ans et il connait une année pleine et entière. Il illustre La Tempête de Shakespeare qui sort en janvier aux éditions France Empire. En mars, il signe ses premiers décors et costumes pour Concert de Danses au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. En avril, il est au Théâtre Royal des Galeries à Bruxelles, auprès de Jean Marais et Jean Cocteau. Ce dernier expliquant dans une interview donnée à la radio belge le 27 avril 46, au lendemain de la Première, que Jean Marais et lui, ont demandé les décors et les costumes de Renaud et Armide " au jeune André Beaurepaire qui nous étonne tous par une imagination et une technique absolument incroyable."
En mai et juin, un nouveau Théâtre de la Mode est à New York au Whitelaw Reid Mansion sur la Madison Avenue puis au Yong Museum de San Francisco. Pendant ce temps, Cocteau l'emmène à l'Ambassade d'Angleterre où il rencontre Louise de Vilmorin. Ils deviennent amis. Et jusqu'en 1969, ils resteront très proches et très complices.
46 toujours, il illustre de deux lithographies Les Barricades Mystérieuses (à l'origine une pièce au clavecin de François Couperin) mais ici, un recueil de poésie d'Olivier Larronde (1927-1965) publié par Paul Morihien, le secrétaire de Jean Cocteau. Beaurepaire et Larronde s'étaient rencontrés un an plus tôt, chez Bérard, où l'un comme l'autre attendaient d'être reçus par le maître… Beaurepaire 20 ans, ses dessins sous le bras et Larronde 18 ans, ses poèmes en tête. Jealous colleagues conspire to get a top London cop (Simon Pegg) transferred to a small town and paired with a witless new partner (Nick Frost). On the beat, the pair stumble upon a series of suspicious accidents and events.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A top London cop who is so good at his job that he makes his fellow officers look like slackers by comparison is "promoted" to serve in the sleepy village of Sandford in this contemporary action comedy from the creators of Shaun of the Dead. Police constable Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) always gets his man, but these days his impeccable record seems to be more indicative of his fellow officers' shortcomings than his own formidable skills as a keeper of the peace. Loathe to stand idly by as their once respectable track record is steadily soiled by the hyper-competent actions of one lone overachiever, Sergeant Angel's superiors at the Met soon determine to remedy their problem by relocating the decorated constable to the West Country village of Sanford -- where tranquil garden parties and neighborhood watch meetings stand in stark contrast to the violent crime and heated gunplay of the city. As Sergeant Angel does his best to adjust to the relative calm of his new environment, his oafish new partner Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) strives to gain the respect of his fellow constables while sustaining himself on fantasies of his favorite action films and police shows. Later, just as it begins to appear as if Sergeant Angel has been relegated to an uneventful existence in the relative calm of the countryside, a series of horrific "accidents" lead him to suspect that the tranquil hamlet of Sanford has fallen prey to a sinister plot which reeks of foul play. Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Steve Coogan, and Martin Freeman co-star in the Edgar Wright film.
