02. Temple of Vesta, Tivoli
The Temple of Vesta at Tivoli demonstrates the impact that Greek prototypes had on Roman temple architecture in the late Republic. Built in around 80 BC, it follows the Greek round plan and uses the third of the canonical Greek orders—the Corinthian. While the Greeks used the Corinthian on occasion, the Romans selected it as their order of choice because it was ornamental and looked equally good from all angles. That the Temple of Vesta has a curved cella wall made of concrete and faced with opus incertum, a single staircase, and a façade orientation designate it as a Roman temple.

Temple of Vesta, Arrived in Rome
Besides a little £460 screw-up on my part with the airline tickets, the trip to Rome went as planned. Really enjoyed seeing the Temple of Vesta since my company is named Myvesta.

Sunol Water Temple
The Sunol Water Temple is located in Sunol, CA. The temple was built by Willis Polk for the Spring Valley Water Company (SVWC) in 1910. It is modeled after Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy. The temple is at the confluence of three water sources (Arroyo de la Laguna, Alameda Creek, and Sunol artesian wells) that at one time supplied most of San Francisco's drinking water in the late 19th century.

Roman Forum's House and Temple of Vestal Virgins opens to the public
February 6, 2011. After spending years on making repairs, the Roman Forum has finally opened over 7 acres of land for public use. This land includes the House of the Vestal Virgins and its temple, a group of ruins known in Latin as the 'Atrium Vestae' that includes the Temple of Vesta. Anna Maria Moretti Archeologist of Rome "The house of this priestly school was exclusively for women, it has a very long history and represents a symbol of Roman life from ancient Rome. We have restored the images from that era, as well as the statues of these priestess to present to the public." The information signs for visitors explain who these vestal virgins were, priestesses consecrated to the domestic goddess Vesta and the special reverence and importance she held in ancient Rome. The bedrooms, reception rooms and service areas were all constructed around a landscaped courtyard, which now includes designs by architect Giacomo Boni. Antonella Tomasello Garden of the Vestal Virgins "The roses suggest the female figure, these priestesses, married to the city of Rome, were devoted to the full custody of the sacred fire as part of the ritual of city government, assisting the Pontifex Maximus." After many changes over time, what you can see today of this house and temple are the reconstructions made after the fire of Nero in 64 AD. Andrea Carandini High Council of Cultural Property "It's the most sacred and important part of the city center, and is above all the main evidence of the birth ...

Les Magee Harpist at the Mussenden Temple
Les Magee, concert harpist performs at the fabulous Mussenden Temple, which is perched on the edge of the North Antrim Coast of Northern Ireland. This fabulous National Trust property was built in 1785 and forms part of the estate of Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol (or the Earl Bishop). It was built as a summer library and its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. It is dedicated to the memory of Hervey's cousin Frideswide Mussenden.

Pingree Report — February 11, 2010
This Pingree report comes from the Sunol Water Temple in Alameda County. The historically-anchored opinion piece equates the temple with its ancient model - the ruined Temple of Vesta, near Rome. Doc Pingree compares our own republic's thrust into empire with that of ancient Rome — and how we should, but have yet to learn our lessons from Rome's devastating collapse.

FIDDLE (N): AN INSTRUMENT TO TICKLE THE HUMAN EARS BY FRICTION
ROME MAY HAVE BURNED, BUT NERO DIDN'T FIDDLE. THE GREAT FIRE OF ROME WAS A LARGE FIRE WHICH STRUCK ANCIENT ROME IN 64 AD. ACCORDING TO THE HISTORIAN TACITUS, THE FIRE STARTED ON THE NIGHT OF 18 JULY AMONG THE SHOPS CLUSTERED AROUND THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS. BECAUSE MANY ROMANS LIVED IN WOOD HOUSES WITHOUT MASONRY, THE FIRE SPREAD QUICKLY THROUGH THESE AREAS. THE FIRE WAS ALMOST CONTAINED AFTER FIVE DAYS BEFORE REGAINING STRENGTH. THE HISTORIAN SEUTONIUS CLAIMS THE FIRE BURNED FOR SIX DAYS AND SEVEN NIGHTS TOTAL. THE FIRE DESTROYED THREE OF FOURTEEN DISTRICTS AND SEVERELY DAMAGED SEVEN WHILE LEAVING ONLY FOUR UNDAMAGED. ALSO DESTROYED WERE NERO'S PALACE, THE TEMPLE OF JUPITER STATOR AND THE HEARTH IN THE TEMPLE OF VESTA. IT IS UNCERTAIN WHO OR WHAT ACTUALLY CAUSED THE FIRE, WHETHER ACCIDENTAL OR ARSON. ACCORDING TO TACITUS, SOME HELD NERO RESPONSIBLE. TO DIFFUSE BLAME, NERO TARGETED THE CHRISTIANS. CHRISTIANS CONFESSED TO THE CRIME, BUT IS IS UNKNOWN IF THESE CONFESSIONS WERE FALSE INDUCED BY TORTURE. SEUTONIUS AND CASSIUS DID FAVOR NERO AS THE ARSONIST WITH AN INSANE DESIRE TO DESTROY THE CITY AS HIS MOTIVE. ACCORDING TO TACITUS, NERO ORDERED CHRISTIANS TO BE THROWN TO DOGS, WHILE OTHERS WERE CRUCIFIED OR BURNED TO SERVE AS LIGHTS. IF YOU HAVE TIME, PLEASE CHECK BACK FROM TIME TO TIME FOR UPDATES TO MY COMPANION PHOTO ALBUM ENTITLED "FIDDLE (N): AN INSTRUMENT USED TO TICKLE THE HUMAN EARS BY FRICTION." LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I GIVE YOU ROME!

Eagle on the Danube - 2012 (Prelude)
NOVAE - Eagle on the Danube - The Fifth Festival of Ancient Heritage in Svishtov, BG - (25-27) May 2012 PRELUDE -- part one At the end of May 2012, the Roman fortress Novae (now known as Svishtov), became the scene of marches of the legions, gladiatorial combats, Barbarian invasions, battles, contest for an antique beauty and a bunch of surprises which brought us into the times of our ancient ancestors. Participants recreated the Roman legionaries, Thracian horsemen, Dacians soldiers, senators and patricians of Rome, nymphs from Dacia and vestals of the temple of Vesta. The festival awaked the spirit of Novae.
