The expression "the extra mile" refers to acts of service for others that go beyond what is required or expected. The expression probably comes from the Bible, when Jesus declares in his Sermon on the Mount, "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two." (Matthew 5:41, (NASB))
The verse is a reference to the practice of "impressment" which, among other things, allowed a Roman soldier to conscript a Jewish native to carry his equipment for one Roman mile (milion = 1,000 paces, about 1,611 yards or 1,473 metres)—no easy task considering a Roman soldier's backpack could weigh upwards of 100 pounds (45.4 kg). The editors of the New Oxford Annotated Study Bible have suggested that going the second mile would perhaps spare another from such compulsion.
The Extra Mile – Points of Light Volunteer Pathway is a national monument in Washington D.C. Located adjacent to the White House, the monument is composed of 34 bronze medallions honoring people who "through their caring and personal sacrifice, reached out to others, building their dreams into movements that helped people across America and throughout the world".The medallions, each 42 inches in diameter, are embedded in sidewalks that form a one-mile walking path bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue, 15th Street, G Street, and 11th Street, NW. Each medallion includes a bas-relief likeness of one or more honorees, a description of their achievement and a quotation.
The Extra Mile was founded by John A. Johansen in 1992. Planning and development for the monument were managed by the Make a Difference Foundation until its merger with the Points of Light Foundation in 2002. While this film was considered a box office flop in Australia, in 2007 it became the first Australian film to receive a general release in the People's Republic of China since Crocodile Dundee. The film was picked up by a Chinese distributor following a series of film festivals organised in the country by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2006. The Extra Mile is a 1962 book of selected short stories by Ivy R. Doherty.
It may be a phone call late at night that wakes my heart and brings me to my knees
It could be the hurt that's in your eyes that shakes my soul from all complacency
But O, I want you to know that I will be the one who prays for you.
It may be the presence of your past that haunts your very will to just believe;
It may seem the weight of all the world has crushed your dreams and laid them at your feet.
B ut O, I want you to know that I will be a friend to see you thru.
For I will w alk the extra mile when the road ahead seems long
I will share those lonly silent nights that pass without a song
Knowing that the darkness is but for a little while
for you my friend, I will walk I wil walk the extra mile
It may be the mention of your name that brings a smi le into my busy day
I could be a place we've bee n before that echoes all the tender words you'd say
But O, I want you to know that I have never had a friend li ke you
And I will walk the extra mile when the road ahead seems long,
I will share those lonely silent nights that pass without a song.
Knowing that the darkness is but for a little while
for you, my friend I will walk, I will walk the extra mile
And though the miles create a distance that keeps us worlds apart,
there's a road you walk each day that travels through my heart.
And I will walk the extra mile when the road ahead seems long,
I will share those lonely silent nights that pass without a son g
Knowing that the darkness is but for a little while,
for you m y friend, I will walk, I will walk the extra mile.
