Deep Sea Exploration (1/5)
======================
Among the most accomplished and well known of the world's deep-sea explorers, Robert Ballard is best known for his historic discoveries of hydrothermal vents, the sunken R.M.S. Titanic, the German battleship Bismarck, and numerous other contemporary and ancient shipwrecks around the world. During his long career he has conducted more than 120 deep-sea expeditions using the latest in exploration technology, and he is a pioneer in the early use of deep-diving submarines.
Ballard has pioneered distance learning in the classrooms of America and around the world with the JASON Project, an award-winning educational program that reaches more than 1 million students and 25,000 teachers annually. He has received prestigious awards from the Explorers Club and the National Geographic Society—the Explorers Medal and the Hubbard Medal, respectively—as well as the Lindbergh Award. In 2003 President George W. Bush presented him with the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal in the Oval Office of the White House.
Ballard is president of the Institute for Exploration, scientist emeritus from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Director of the newly created Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. His new ship of exploration, the E/V Nautilus operated by his Ocean Exploration Trust spends four to five months at sea each year and will be exploring the Black Sea, Aegean, Mediterranean, and Atlantic Ocean in 2011, beaming back his exploration around the clock on Nautilus Live.

Breathtaking... Nearly 20 years after first finding the sunken remains of the R.M.S. Titanic, marine explorer Robert Ballard returned in June 2004 helped by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Ocean Exploration to study the ship's rapid deterioration.
The R.M.S. Titanic team worked aboard the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown from May 30 through June 9 spending 11 days at the wreck site, mapping the ship and conducting scientific analysis of its deterioration. Using the Institute for Exploration (IFE) remotely operated vehicles (ROV's) Hercules and Argus, to conduct a sophisticated documentation of the state of Titanic was not possible in the 1980's. This "Look, don't touch" mission utilized high-definition video and stereoscopic still images to provide an updated assessment of the wreck site at an enormous depth of 3,840 meters (12,600 feet).
As the nation's ocean agency, NOAA has a vested interest in the scientific and cultural aspects of the Titanic, and in its appropriate treatment and preservation. NOAA's focus is to build a baseline of scientific information from which we can measure the shipwreck's processes and deterioration, and then apply the knowledge we gain to other deep-water shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources. Video courtesy of the R.M.S. Titanic Expedition Team 2004, ROI, IFE, NOAA-OER.

Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students.
At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology.
Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end "math phobia" in his generation.
Jacob's favorite pastime is playing basketball with the kids at his charity, Jacob's Place. It is a place where kids with autism are inspired every day to be their true authentic selves...just like Jacob.

Sharks on a world wide scale suffer under their reputation as brutal killers. They are close to extinction due to human prosecution. Ocean Ramsey explains why they are a valuable and fundamental part of the oceans´ eco-systems and encourages everyone of us to help saving them... for our own good.
Ocean Ramsey´s passion sounds rather scary to many of us. She dives with white sharks and is passionate about showing the beauty of them. White sharks are nowaday close to extinction, as they are misunderstood beings suffering under their wrong interpretated nature. Even though sharks are very intelligent and highly helpful in keeping the oceans in a healthy balance by eating ill organisms, they are seen as a danger. It is her goal to generate a better understanding between humans and sharks in order to save them.

After her trip to India, Andreea Raicu, a famous Romanian model and TV star, realized who she really was and what is her goal in life. Besides all, she discovered who is the most important person in her life. It was her.
Andreea Raicu became a public figure when she won Elite Model Look Award. Afterwards she started a career in television where she worked for 18 years. She created a unique concept on the Romanian market, the online platform www.andreearaicu.ro and became a motivational speaker, after her transformational experiences and personal development courses from India to Brazil.

Deep Learning RNNaissance
Machine learning and pattern recognition are currently being revolutionised by "Deep Learning" (DL) Neural Networks (NNs). This is of commercial interest (for example, Google spent over 400m on start-up "deepmind" co-founded by our student). I summarise work on DL since the 1960s, and our own work since 1991. Our recurrent NNs (RNNs) were the first to win official international competitions in pattern recognition and machine learning; our team has won more such contests than any other research group or company. Our Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) RNNs helped to improve connected handwriting recognition, speech recognition, machine translation, optical character recognition, image caption generation, and other fields. Our Deep Learners also were the first to win object detection and image segmentation contests, and achieved the world's first superhuman visual classification results. We also built the first reinforcement learning RNN-based agent that learns from scratch complex video game control based on high-dimensional vision. Time permitting, I'll also address curious/creative machines and theoretically optimal, universal, self-modifying artificial intelligences.
Talk slides:
http://www.idsia.ch/~juergen/deeplearning2014slides.pdf
Outline of slides:
- First Deep Learning (DL) (Ivakhnenko, 1965)
- History of backpropagation: Bryson, Kelley, Dreyfus (early 1960s), Linnainmaa (1970), Speelpenning (1980), Werbos (1981), Rumelhart et al (1986), others
- Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) - the deepest of all NNs - search in general program space!
- 1991: Fundamental DL problem (FDLP) of gradient-based NNs (Hochreiter, my 1st student, now prof)
- 1991: Our deep unsupervised stack of recurrent NNs (RNNs) overcomes the FDLP: the Neural History Compressor or Hierarchical Temporal Memory / related to autoencoder stacks (Ballard, 1987) and Deep Belief Nets (Hinton et al, 2006)
- Our purely supervised deep Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) RNN overcomes the FDLP without any unsupervised pre-training (1990s, 2001, 2003, 2006-, with Hochreiter, Gers, Graves, Fernandez, Wierstra, Gomez, others)
- How LSTM became the first RNN to win controlled contests (2009), and set standards in connected handwriting and speech recognition
- Industrial breakthroughs of 2014: Google / Microsoft / IBM used LSTM to improve machine translation, image caption generation, speech recognition / text-to-speech synthesis / prosody detection
- 2010: How our deep GPU-based NNs trained by backprop (3-5 decades old) + training pattern deformations (2 decades old) broke the MNIST record
- History of feedforward max-pooling (MP) convolutional NNs (MPCNNs, Fukushima 1979-, Weng 1992, LeCun et al 1989-2000s, others)
- How our ensembles of GPU-based MPCNNs (Ciresan et al, 2011) became the first DL systems to achieve superhuman visual pattern recognition (traffic signs), and to win contests in image segmentation (brain images, 2012) and visual object detection (cancer cells, 2012, 2013) / fast MPCNN image scans (Masci et al, 2013)
- Why it's all about data compression
- 2014: 20 year anniversary of self-driving cars in highway traffic (Dickmanns, 1994)
- Reinforcement Learning (RL): How NN-based planning robots won the RoboCup in the fast league (Foerster et al, 2004)
- Our deep RL through Compressed NN Search applied to huge RNN video game controllers that learn to process raw video input (Koutnik et al, 2013)
- Formal theory of fun and creativity

Rapper, business owner and activist, Marco Pavé delivers an inspiring talk on how the arts saved his life. Beyond his individual story, Marco discusses how "cradle-to-career" arts policy that focuses on infrastructure to support artists can boost the local economy, address poverty by creating pathways to entrepreneurship, and consequently deter crime.
Memphis native Marco Pavé sits at the intersection of hip-hop, arts communities, technology, and local activism, harnessing the power of music to transform his city. He is Project Pat meets KRS-One, spitting an urban country consciousness with a confidence that could only emerge from coming of age as a Muslim Millennial in North Memphis. As the leader of Radio Rahim Music, Marco is committed to his community as well as his music. He uses his music as a pathway to build partnerships and influence how organizations engage with Memphis communities through art. Memphis’ robust arts community is poised to empower diverse community members to identify local issues and develop ongoing solutions. He has partnered with Memphis grassroots organizations, government officials, schools and universities, activists, and local entrepreneurs on various projects that have transformed how the city of Memphis tackles such issues as literacy and economic development.
