As Sylvia Earle has said, "The oceans deserve our respect and care, but you have to know something before you can care about it." We find that invoking the natural poetry of the sea is more effective than sobering calls-to-action steeped in the language of hardcore environmentalists. A litany of terms exists to describe threats to marine ecosystems worldwide, but these are meaningless absent an underlying sense of the ocean's beauty and significance. Likewise, most "eco" terms fall flat for us on Isla Palenque, where we could write tomes about the holistic approach required to make a sustainable existence possible here on this wild private island in Panama. There's a missing element that doesn't easily come across on paper: the beautiful interaction between humans and their environment. A single day's exploration on Isla Palenque conveys the importance of conservation in ways that it would take years for us to blog about. Last summer, our Island Intern captured the enormity of this oceanic paradise using timelapse shots on just one of the island's twelve beaches -- can you imagine what it would take to capture all 400 acres? To be out in a secluded place, untouched by the hand of human development, is a profound thing. Bringing The Resort at Isla Palenque to life has been a process of designing and planning an existence lived harmoniously in the middle of the wilderness, blending the sophistication of today with the simplicity of yesterday. While witnessing this taking place is pretty powerful, the full experience is going to be transformative for our first guests. Especially when we consider all the places around the world where the balance between human activities and the natural order are very much awry, it is important to celebrate places where coexistence with nature is so beautiful and inspiring as it is on Isla Palenque.
