On
November 8th 2005 Thrasher Magazine will release the 12th installment of their long running
Skate Rock compilation series, only this time its been 13 years since the last volume was released and this one won't be on cassette.
Thrasher Magazine
Presents SkateRock Vol. 12, "Eat
The Flag" will be released on DualDisc with one side of audio and the other side features a visual documentary that captures the what, when, and how skateboarding became so important to rock and vice versa along with interviews from
Duane Peters,
Tony Trujillo, and
Steve Caballero. Also included are 3 songs from
Turbonegro's performance at the 2004 Thrasher Magazine
Skater Of The Year
Awards.
Beginning publication in
1981, Thrasher Magazine was born as skateboarding was moving back underground, as earlier skateboard publications folded, and the surge that skateboarding felt in the 70's started to cool in the mainstream media. In an effort to supplement their music editorial in the magazine
Thrasher released a series of compilations on cassettes and three of the volumes were also offered on vinyl in limited quantities. These consisted of the bands that were being covered in the magazine, who were playing skateboarding events and whose music was being used in skateboarding videos.
Originally conceived and directed by Mörizen Föche, aka
Mofo (singer for the
Drunk Injuns) Thrasher SkateRock
Vol. 1 was released in
1983: "Thrasher SkateRock". This first volume included tracks from legendary SkateRock bands
JFA, The
Big Boys,
Los Olvidados,
The Faction, and the Drunk Injuns. Ten subsequent releases followed this initial release that also included volumes complied by infamous artist/contributor
Pushead. After the release in
1993 of Vol. 11, "
Crank It Up", the series went on a mysterious undisclosed hiatus.
Over the span of those eleven volumes the genre of SkateRock was defined and expanded upon by the bands on each compilation, the articles written in Thrasher and the parities thrown at various empty pools, warehouses, backyards, and skate parks.
SkateRock lives on today with the bands like
Millencolin and
Alkaline Trio whose members grew up skating and listening to old SkateRock tapes. As in the 80's many of today's "
Wild Riders of
Boards" continue the tradition of "
Blazing Wheels and Barking Trucks" with their musical multi-tasking.
Look forward to Thrasher to unearth more chapters and further express Skate &
Destroy attitudes in music and life!! Be advised, stay tuned.
