Ravi Baswani, acclaimed actor, who shot to fame with the cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), passed away in Shimla yesterday when shooting for a film he was planning to direct.
He was 64. Having debuted in the Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor in 1981, Ravi Baswani did many films as a character artiste.
His performance in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro earned him a Filmfare Best Comedian Award.
The film he was planning to direct was about a 10-year-old orphan who lives with his grandmother in the hills. The actor died of a massive heart attack, last afternoon, in Haldwani, near Nainital.
Ravi Baswani's friend actor Zakir Hussain told Mumbai Mirror, "I believe he was coming from Nainital back home to Delhi.
He was accompanied by a couple of people who were working with him on a children's film, which he planned to direct in the near future. Ravi had spoken to a few people who had agreed to produce the film. The team had gone to Nainital to scout for locations. The plan was to shoot the film in the hilly regions in and around Nainital."
Explaining what transpired, close friend Ashok Pandit said, "Ravi suffered a cardiac attack. By the time they could get medical aid in Haldwani, he had passed way. His death has come as a big shock."
Sudesh Sayal who produced a TV show directed by Ravi Baswani, called Panchi said, "Ravi had no bad habits like smoking or drinking. He was a very simple man."

Ravi Baswani
Ravi Baswani (29 September 1946 – 27 July 2010) was a well-known Indian film actor, most famous for his role in Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor (1981) and Kundan Shah's cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), for which he won Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 1984. He was noted for his comic timing and underplaying a character in the true sense of the word. In a career spanning 30 years he acted in some 30 films. He died in Haldwani, on his way to Delhi from hill station Nainital, to where he had travelled to scout for locations for his upcoming directorial feature which was also to be his debut in that role.
Early life and education
Ravi Baswani was born and brought up in a Jat family in Delhi. He did his schooling from St. George's College, Mussoorie. He later did his graduation from Kirori Mal College (KMC), Delhi University, he was also part of the KMC dramatic society at the college.
Career
He started his career in 1981 with Chashme Buddoor and did many successful films as a comedian and/or as a character artist. He also appeared very many times on Indian television. He went on to work in films like the cult Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Chhota Chetan, Ab Aayega Maza and Naseeruddin Shah's first directorial venture, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. As a television actor, he acted in numerous TV serials, including, the popular comedy serial, Idhar Udhar on Doordarshan in the 1980s, wherein he acted alongside Pathak sisters, Supriya Pathak and Ratna Pathak. More recently he was seen in character roles in films like Bunty Aur Babli and Pyar Tune Kya Kiya. In 2004, when Film and Television Institute of India, Pune revived its acting course after 26 years, he became its coordinator and a teacher, along with Naseeruddin Shah, who also redesigned the course, Baswani however resigned the next year.

Ravi Baswani, acclaimed actor, who shot to fame with the cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), passed away in Shimla yesterday when shooting for a film he was planning to direct.
He was 64. Having debuted in the Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor in 1981, Ravi Baswani did many films as a character artiste.
His performance in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro earned him a Filmfare Best Comedian Award.
The film he was planning to direct was about a 10-year-old orphan who lives with his grandmother in the hills. The actor died of a massive heart attack, last afternoon, in Haldwani, near Nainital.
Ravi Baswani's friend actor Zakir Hussain told Mumbai Mirror, "I believe he was coming from Nainital back home to Delhi.
He was accompanied by a couple of people who were working with him on a children's film, which he planned to direct in the near future. Ravi had spoken to a few people who had agreed to produce the film. The team had gone to Nainital to scout for locations. The plan was to shoot the film in the hilly regions in and around Nainital."
Explaining what transpired, close friend Ashok Pandit said, "Ravi suffered a cardiac attack. By the time they could get medical aid in Haldwani, he had passed way. His death has come as a big shock."
Sudesh Sayal who produced a TV show directed by Ravi Baswani, called Panchi said, "Ravi had no bad habits like smoking or drinking. He was a very simple man."

Plot :
Siddharth (Farooq Shaikh), Omi (Rakesh Bedi) and Jomo (Ravi Baswani) are close friends and room mates who are studying at Delhi University. Siddharth has completed M.A in Economics and is preparing for PhD. While Siddharth is a studious boy who loves to spend most of his time with books, his other two friends- Omi and Jomo are mostly busy chasing girls, watching movies or dramas. The only thing common among three of them is smoking. One day, Omi and Jomo see a girl (Neha) who is new to their neighborhood and try to impress her by their tricks. However, both of them give up after experiencing shameful events. After some days, Neha (Deepti Naval) visits their flat as the salesgirl of Chamko washing powder. As soon as Jomo and Omi see her, they hide quickly. Siddharth meets Neha for the first time and soon a love story begins. But when his other two friends find out, they decide to plot something to end their relationship and also to seek revenge to the embarrassment inflicted upon them by the girl. Initially, they succeed in separating Siddharth and Neha but later on repent when they realise that Siddharth has started losing his interest in work and study and is most likely to end his life as well. Finally, they decide to reunite both the lovers.
The parallel plot runs between Omi, Jomo, Siddharth and Lallan Miyan (Saeed Jaffrey). Lallan Miyan is the local shopkeeper who sells Cigarettes to Omi and Jomo on credit. But as students, they don't clear his debts, Lallan Miyan tries to follow up with them to get their dues.
A spate of kidnapping (especially of young girls) has started in Delhi. One fine day, Omi and his friends along with Neha's grandmother plan to stage a fake kidnapping and get married. But unfortunately, she is kidnapped by the real gang and the duo is left in a lurch. The later part of the story revolves on how they clear the confusion that she has been going through and how she was kidnapped by real thugs and finally rescued.
