Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Fluoridated water has fluoride at a level that is effective for preventing cavities; this can occur naturally or by adding fluoride. Fluoridated water operates on tooth surfaces: in the mouth it creates low levels of fluoride in saliva, which reduces the rate at which tooth enamel demineralizes and increases the rate at which it remineralizes in the early stages of cavities. Typically a fluoridated compound is added to drinking water, a process that in the U.S. costs an average of about $1.02 per person-year. Defluoridation is needed when the naturally occurring fluoride level exceeds recommended limits. A 1994 World Health Organization expert committee suggested a level of fluoride from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L (milligrams per litre), depending on climate.Bottled water typically has unknown fluoride levels.
Dental caries remains a major public health concern in most industrialized countries, affecting 60–90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults. Water fluoridation prevents cavities in both children and adults, with studies estimating an 18–40% reduction in cavities when water fluoridation is used by children who already have access to toothpaste and other sources of fluoride. Studies suggest that the use of water fluoridation, particularly in industrialized countries, may be unnecessary for caries prevention because topical fluorides (such as in toothpaste) are widely used and caries rates have become low.
Captain Fantastic was a regular feature of Do Not Adjust Your Set from 1967 to 1968 which appeared as a filmed insert between the videotaped sketches.
The title character was a bowler-hatted, plastic-mac wearing and umbrella carrying superhero played by David Jason. Denise Coffey also appeared as the villainous Mrs Black.
Each episode was shot on location in and around London. There was no lip sync dialogue, so episodes played like silent movies, narrated by Jason in character over a frenetic piece of library music. Each week Mrs Black would attempt to take over the world using the electronic gadgetry contained in her "horrible handbag", while Captain Fantastic tried to set things right using his high-tech umbrella.
Each episode ended on a cliffhanger, usually accompanied by a sarcastic comment from the announcer. (This might be seen as a forerunner to the narration style of Danger Mouse, which also starred Jason as a voice actor).
During one first series episode of DNAYS, Eric Idle followed the Captain Fantastic segment with the song "Captain Fantastic, We Love You", backed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The performance featured several of the regular cast members dancing while dressed as superheroes, including Jason who was dressed as Robin. Some years later Jason was to wear a Batman suit in an episode of Only Fools and Horses.
A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions, and has in recent decades been extended to use by VIPs and celebrities at formal events.
The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC. When the title character returns from Troy, he is greeted by his vengeful wife Clytemnestra who offers him a red path to walk upon:
Agamemnon, knowing that only gods walk on such luxury, responds with trepidation:
Oriental carpets in Renaissance painting often show rugs and carpets, patterned but with red often the main background colour, laid on the steps to a throne, or on a dais where rulers or sacred figures are placed.
A red carpet was rolled out to a river to welcome the arrival of United States president James Monroe in 1821. In 1902, The New York Central Railroad used plush crimson carpets to direct people as they boarded their 20th Century Limited passenger train. This is believed to be the origin of the phrase "red-carpet treatment". Film premieres are often laid down with red carpets.

www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode Captain Fantastic is out on DVD next week featuring a great performance from George MacKay. Here are my favourite films with this versatile young actor.

Hi this is my original 1991 6 track demo of a song that was inspired by a documentary on Whales. I wanted Orchestral parts to emulate the majestic movement and power of these mamals and did my best to do so using a keyboard and roland sound canvas. Not easy seeing I had never before played one. This is the 2 verse edit of the original 4 verse version. copyright@mckay
Short film in which UEA academic and festival expert discusses current AHRC-funded research project, The Impact of Festivals. Specifically Prof McKay talks about an article called 'The impact of jazz festivals', just published in Jazz Research Journal, picking out two of the key findings: how a jazz festival reflects or captures its setting/city, and the economic impact of jazz festivals. Written 1974 as a Teenager and learning guitar. Inspired by a pretty girl from Hawick that I saw every day at Galashiels College, Scotland. Considering I was into Rock Music and not Country & Western, this was probably just within my 4 guitar chords limit of C D G & F. Recorded many years later with Bob Brady & Neil McLeod from the Scottish Folk Band "The Wally Dugs" in Hamburg at Imstedo Ranch Winterhude - 1991. copyright@mckay

Mermaids - very first acoustic recording from 1998. Antje plays the guitar and sings for me this new song with no intro nor solo part. We never recorded it again so the Vocal for the final version is this original 8 track tape and adding an intro and solo parts. Included this on my channel as perhaps interesting how a raw song might evolve. song lyrics arrangement@copyright jackie - krumrey-mckay
This is an idea from 1991 that was never devloped further. I guess at the time I felt it a consious attempt to just write something up-tempo and catchy. Having discovered this recording some 25 years later its interesting to hear the a 70,s - 80s pop-rock influence and was composed with a Bryan Adams / Paul Rodgers vocals style in mind and shows at least a consious effort to attempt different styles. An original idea and lyric so perhaps 5/10 for effort ;o). copyright@mckay
Complete 1991 Demo Mix 2. This song idea was never developed further and remains with the adhoc vocals of that recording session. I intended to replace them with completely different lyrics but thought I had better ideas for songs to present my band and forgot about it. Still its a page that was missing from my Musical Ideas Diary that I discovered on an original 8 track tape that I could now present here in better quality. If youve read this far there is a section about two thirds thru that was my homage to Roy Harper and his Stormcock album. copyright@mckay
On The Beach - My adaption of this Neil Young song that I got out of my head and onto a Tascam 688 8 Track around 1992. Recorded Hamburg and photo I took in Scotland "On The Beach" 2015

The first thing that stands out in Adagietto by George McKay is the melody. It has a simple, but beautiful quality to it, which makes sense given McKay's background in folk music. This melody combines with the accompaniment to create a unique harmonic style drawing from early 20th century art music, jazz, and folk music.

On The Beach - Neil Young. About time I included a song from the singer songwriter musician that most influenced me to write 100,s of songs myself and persevere learning guitar. This is a favorite of mines from 1974 that I adapted in 1991 for my band to consider including in our set. Very different from Youngs Album version including a subtle third octave change during the solo. Recorded onto an old 8 track tape - cleaned up and re-mastered 2018 Full Version.
Wrote this 1990 in Rio De Janeiro. Inspired by a gorgeous woman I met at a bar on the Copacabana. We became friends and the lyric a combination of what I saw and what she revealed about her life in Vervella Mangueira. This is an acoustic version Vocals Antje Bass Stefan.

Mortuary Blues - For me a demo recording is similar to an entry in a diary and this one is unique in that I only had a melody but no lyrics. However summer 1990 I had just returned from a sleep over at a friend who,s sister was a Heroin addict and accompanied that morning for a walk before we went our seperate ways. She was 24 and this encounter resulted in the lyrics. At the begining of the recording I didnt know what I was about to sing. This remains the only recording as I havent written more suitable lyrics. copyright@mckay
Written 1990 and combined two themes, the end of a relationship and the onset of Winter. Recording is from our rehearsal room and only exisiting version. The guitar solo mimics "Summer Time And The Living Is Easy" just a little something I thought quirky for a song with a Winter Theme. Our band 1990 - 1992 was named FRAMED and based in Hamburg with Stefan Bass, Matz Drums, and Thorsten Vocals & Guitar. copyright@mckay

Delusions Of Grandieur (Potion Nr 2) is a different mix including diabolical laugh. What I am sharing here is the essence of a song, its not develped. Something I had worked on back in 1991 and amazed to find my original 8 track recording which I will have prepared to present my band for consideration but never did and just got forgotten. Its like finding the page of an old diary and reminds me of experimenting with the first midi stuff, sequencers and drum machines. Always cool if someone likes. copyright@mckay
This is our 2nd Take and version on this classic 40s song, recorded minutes after the first but sung quite differently by Florence. Here Flo sings more in align with the chords having now sung it once thru which is why Version one is different by singing off the beat. I like both but then I love Live Lounge Acoustic Sessions and first and second takes which will always contain a certain excitement and improvisation.
This version was recorded late at night in 1998 in my lounge. We needed to be quiet so as to not disturb the neighbours and this gives it a certain vibe. I liked Antjes idea to repeat certain vacals which gives it some originality and different. I enjoy spontainious Live Lounge Music like this as it accurately captures the moment.
Its 1998 and after listening to Patti Rothbergs Between the 1 and the 9, myself and Florence from Austria gave this and "Treat Me Like Dirt" a try. Flo much prefers singing Jazz/Blues so this was a one off. Just some Non Professional Live Lounge Acoustic Music for friends of this kinda thing. Thats Florence with the Umberela so its obviously Summertime in Scotland.
Live Lounge Acoustic Recordings - We recorded this one evening in Largs Scotland 1998. It was in a Buskers Song book and we just gave it a try. The image is a rare one of us during our weekend sessions of eating, walks drinking and playing some.

1941 Lover Man. This is Take One of our version of the song with Florence choosing to sing it off the beat. Minutes later she did another take singing it on the beat, both work and 100% spontainious Live Lounge Recordings. My you tube channel allows me to share what we as non professionals were preparing but never got around to performing live to an audiance. Florence Vocals (Austria) George Guitars (Scotland) & Stefen Bass (Germany). Germany.

'Festival, Industry, Place, Community': This is the keynote address from the Live Music Exchange: Cardiff event, November 10th, 2012 Professor George McKay gives a wide ranging presentation, which covers the history of music festivals in the context of the music industry, but also dealt with its relationship to a sense of place in terms of both society and geography. From the role of CND to the tensions between fans of traditional and modern jazz audiences, the violence at Beaulieu and Stonehenge to the evolution of Glastonbury, the music festival has been the site of contested social spaces, reflecting changes in Britain's cultural and physical landscape. This paper provides rich anecdotal evidence of the evolution of music festivals since the 1950s, underpinned by analysis of the cu...

The wonderfully ephemeral world of popular music is not always thought of as an inclusive space for the disabled artist. Through a discussion of music, media, song lyrics and performances, Prof George McKay (School of Art, Media and American Studies) looks at ways in which pop and rock singers and bands have explored the experience of disability, and acted as advocates and activists for disability campaigns.
