A close call with a wombat as it enters the narrow pipeline behind Andrew as he's crawling through it.
The wombat is strong, sturdy and built close to the ground with sharp teeth and claws. Their tunneling ability is incredible and they make homes with ease with intricate underground tunnel systems.
Wombats will typically spend many hours each night browsing for food near their home tunnels as they mainly eat grass and other plant material such as shrub, moss, bark and roots and like all Australian mammals the common wombat is a protected Australian species.

A zookeeper had her hands full on Wednesday tending to what is believed to be the world's "oldest" and "biggest" Wombat in captivity at the Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria. The wombat, known as Patrick, was hand-raised after being orphaned as a baby and sadly remains a virgin. He has lived nearly his entire life in captivity at the Ballarat Wildlife Park as he couldn’t defend himself against other wombats in the wild.

Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary is a self-funded wombat sanctuary in New South Wales, Australia. They specialise in rehabilitating injured, orphaned and pet wombats. They help orphaned wombats and teach them the necessary skills so that they can return and be released into the Australian bush, where they belong. The sanctuary was started initially to deal with injured wombats but over the years the amount of orphans or 'pet' wombats they receive has increased substantially.
Pet wombats in particular take a lot of time and dedication to reverse the damage done by humans but every wombat deserves the chance to live where it belongs.
Their work includes relocating wombats, assisting councils and farmers, educating children and people in general about wombats.
They have observed big changes over the years in terms of wombat location, injuries, stress on populations and so much more. Education is the key as is smart rehabilitation for the successful release of these animals back into the bush where they will in fact survive with the necessary skills.

We've all got that one friend who doesn't seem to understand boundaries. And we put up with them, because they're genuinely nice. But then they just go too far.
For labrador, Stella, that friend is a wombat joey called Yhi who, according to this video, is partial to some collaborative grooming.
Stella is the local guardian at the Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary so she's used to funny looking dogs hanging around. But it looks like her patience is put to the test by tiny Yhi who manages to go from zero to creep in a matter of seconds.
To be fair, Stella doesn't seem to mind all that much. And we can't say that we would either – just look at that little face!

You would never expect it, but these baby Wombats are some of the cutest animals alive!
We asked our associate editor Harry what he thought about wombats, and he said, "An ugly animal—like a bat but dumber." Then we showed him this video and he was paralyzed in an alternating laugh/awwww/laugh/awwww stupor for three whole minutes. Then we really fucked with his emotional bearings by telling him that this little munchkin, named Belle, is an orphan. Sadly, her mother was run over by a car, but when animal control arrived they checked her pouch and found Belle alive and well inside. (Unlike most marsupials, wombat patches open from the bottom, near their rumps, so that when they dig they don't sprinkle dirt all over their babies. Clever, eh?) After being rescued, Belle was taken to Healesville Sanctuary in Australia and currently lives there with her best mate, Phoenix, another orphaned wombat. When we visited, they simultaneously dove into a tunnel that was too small to fit both of them, so their little butts were wiggling around in our faces as they tried to push their way inside. It was hilarious!

Wombats, Australian marsupials, are short-legged, muscular quadrupeds, approximately 1 metre (40 in) in length with a short, stubby tail. They are adaptable in habitat tolerance, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 hectares (740 acres) in Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland.
Wombats dig extensive burrow systems with rodent-like front teeth and powerful claws. One distinctive adaptation of wombats is their backwards pouch. The advantage of a backwards-facing pouch is that when digging, the wombat does not gather dirt in its pouch over its young. Although mainly crepuscular and nocturnal, wombats also venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. They are not commonly seen, but leave ample evidence of their passage, treating fences as minor inconveniences to be gone through or under, and leaving distinctive cubic faeces.
Wombats are herbivores; their diet consists mostly of grasses, sedges, herbs, bark and roots. Their incisor teeth somewhat resemble those of the placental rodents (rats, mice, moles, etc.), being adapted for gnawing tough vegetation. Like many other herbivorous mammals, they have a large diastema between the incisors and the cheek teeth, which are relatively simple. Plot: Napoleon is a little dog that lives in Sydney. A close call with a wombat as it enters the narrow pipeline behind Andrew as he's crawling through it. The wombat is strong, sturdy and built close to the ground with sharp teeth and claws. Their tunneling ability is incredible and they make homes with ease with intricate underground tunnel systems. A zookeeper had her hands full on Wednesday tending to what is believed to be the world's "oldest" and "biggest" Wombat in captivity at the Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria. The wombat, known as Patrick, was hand-raised after being orphaned as a baby and sadly remains a virgin. For labrador, Stella, that friend is a wombat joey called Yhi who, according to this video, is partial to some collaborative grooming. Stella is the local guardian at the Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary so she's used to funny looking dogs hanging around. But it looks like her patience is put to the test by tiny Yhi who manages to go from zero to creep in a matter of seconds. To be fair, Stella doesn't seem to mind all that much. You would never expect it, but these baby Wombats are some of the cutest animals alive! We asked our associate editor Harry what he thought about wombats, and he said, "An ugly animal—like a bat but dumber." Then we showed him this video and he was paralyzed in an alternating laugh/awwww/laugh/awwww stupor for three whole minutes. Then we really fucked with his emotional bearings by telling him that this little munchkin, named Belle, is an orphan. Sadly, her mother was run over by a car, but when animal control arrived they checked her pouch and found Belle alive and well inside. (Unlike most marsupials, wombat patches open from the bottom, near their rumps, so that when they dig they don't sprinkle dirt all over their babies. Clever, eh?) After being rescued, Belle was taken to Healesville Sanctuary in Australia and currently lives there with her best mate, Phoenix, another orphaned wombat. When we visited, they simultaneously dove into a tunnel that was too small to fit both of them, so their little butts were wiggling around in our faces as they tried to push their way inside. It was hilarious!
