Penn State and Pittsburgh used to play every year when they were both Eastern independents, but the rivalry went dormant after the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten and Pitt went to the ACC. Their first meeting since 2000 — the first of a four-game series that runs through 2019 — matches teams coming off 20-point wins over inferior competition. In an attempt to keep the players' focus, Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi has put the Panthers on lockdown because he says "this week we're going to stay locked in and have no distractions." Meanwhile, Penn State head coach James Franklin instituted no such gag-order on his players and acknowledged the significance of the rivalry this week. "I think, obviously, being in the same state, and the past history of the game, is really going to put a major emphasis on it," Franklin said this week, via PennLive. "To me, a rivalry, there's no doubt that it's there from a history perspective. "There's elements there from a historical perspective, but our players haven't done that. We approach this like every other game on our schedule. Our guys are excited about it, but I think everybody understands the significance of that." Pitt scored two touchdowns in 47 seconds in the first quarter and added two more early in the second. Pitt redshirt junior running back James Conner put together rushed for 24 and 23 yards while sophomore wide receiver Quadree Henderson added a 38-yard run en route to Pitt's first score on a 10-play, 99-yard drive. Redshirt sophomore fullback George Aston ran in for the 1-yard score while senior kicker Chris Blewitt kicked the extra point with 8:03 left in the first quarter. Penn State's next drive didn't last long, as Nittany Lion redshirt junior left tackle Brendan Mahon left redshirt sophomore quarterback Trace McSorley vulnerable for a sack. Redshirt senior defensive lineman Ejuan Price forced the fumble that redshirt senior linebacker Mike Caprara recovered, then Nate Peterman threw the 7-yard pass to Henderson, and Blewitt made the kick with 7:16 left in the first quarter. The Nittany Lions managed a comeback starting with a 59-yard punt return from sophomore John Reid. A pass interference call on Pitt junior defensive back Avonte Maddox then set up Penn State for a 7-yard rushing touchdown courtesy of sophomore running back Saquon Barkley. Redshirt junior kicker Tyler Davis scored the extra point with 2:42 to go in the first. Peterman threw a 2-yard pass to senior tight end Scott Orndoff, and Blewitt made the kick with 13:38 to go in the second. McSorley then endured another fumble that Price forced and sophomore defensive back Jordan Whitehead recovered. From that turnover, Aston eventually scored his second touchdown, a 3-yard rush, and Blewitt again kicked with 11:54 left in the half. Penn State got another seven points shortly before halftime on a 1-yard rush from Barkley and a Davis kick. Barkley scored another touchdown on a 40-yard reception with 11:54 left in the third. The Panthers responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 1-yard score by Conner. Barkley scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 13:42 left in the fourth. After a Conner fumble, Penn State’s offense stalled before Davis converted a 38-yard field goal with 12:04 left. Henderson returned the ensuing kick 84 yards for Pitt to set up a 12-yard Conner touchdown catch. Barkley’s 2-yard run with five minutes left brought the Nittany Lions within five and a two-point conversion pulled them to within three. Saturday is the 97th meeting all time between the two teams; before then, they had not played each other since 2000. Pitt trouncing Penn State after first half PITTSBURGH By halftime of Saturday’s Penn State - Pitt matchup at Heinz Field, the Panthers led the Nittany Lions 28-14. Pitt also broke the 200-rush-yards mark with six minutes left in the half, and headed into the locker room with 226 rushing yards to Penn State’s 48, and 289 total yards to the Nittany Lions’ 178.
