Shirley Temple - On The Good Ship Lollipop 1934 Bright Eyes
For
Wendy.... "
On the Good Ship Lollipop" was the trademark song of child actress
Shirley Temple.
Temple first sang it in the
1934 movie Bright Eyes.
Shirley Jane Temple (born April 23, 1928), later known as
Shirley Temple Black, is an
American film and television actress, singer, dancer, autobiographer, and former
U.S. Ambassador to
Ghana and
Czechoslovakia. She began her film career in 1932 at the age of three, and in 1934, skyrocketed to superstardom in Bright Eyes, a feature film designed specifically for her talents. She received a special
Academy Award in
February 1935, and film hits such as
Curly Top and
Heidi followed year after year during the mid to late
1930s. Licensed merchandise that capitalized on her wholesome image included dolls, dishes, and clothing. Her box office popularity waned as she reached adolescence, and she left the film industry at the age of 12 to attend high school. She appeared in a few films of varying quality in her mid to late teens, and retired completely from films in
1950 at the age of 22. She was the top box-office draw four years in a row (1935--38) in a
Motion Picture Herald poll.
Lyrics:
I've thrown away my toys,
Even my drums and trains,
I want to make some noise,
with real live airplanes.
Some day I'm going to fly,
I'll be a pilot to,
and when I do,
how would you,
like to be my crew?
On the good ship
lollipop
its a sweet trip
to the candy shop
where bon-bon's play,
on the sunny beach
of peppermint bay
Lemonade stands,
everywhere
crackerjack bands,
fill the air,
and there you are,
happy landings on a chocolate bar.
See the sugar bowl
do a tootsie roll
in a big bad devils food cake,
if you eat too much,
oh, oh,
you'll awake,
with a tummy ache.
On the good ship
lollipop
its a nice trip,
in to bed you hop,
and dream away,
on the good ship
lollipop

Jane Withers Film Scenes Paddy O'Day This is The Life Shirley Temple
Jane Withers was working by the time she was three years old, but her big break came in 1934 when
Fox Studios cast her opposite
Shirley Temple in
Bright Eyes.
The following year, the
NY Times dubbed her "
Public Problem Child #1"!
Jane recalled that at every audition, she was the odd one, with her plain outfits and straight bobbed hair. However, when Fox was looking for an "opposite" for Shirley Temple, she heard about it and said "
Mama, get me to that studio!"
Jane Withers was such a success in the film that Fox immediately signed her to a contract and featured in her in own films and she quickly became #6 box office in the nation. Jane helped write her own dialogue and cast her own films. She was generous and benevolent as a child and continues to be today; an example of a true woman of faith. Her films are very different from
Shirley's! In these clips from Bright Eyes,
Paddy O'Day,
Ginger and
This Is The Life, Jane demonstrates her amazing versatility as a imitator (
Zasu Pitts and
Garbo!) comedian, dramatic actress, singer and dancer
. WOW! After acquiring some of her films, Jane has a new fan in my nine year old and we wanted to share some of her best moments. Jane, we love you (and we want your films on official
DVD releases!!!)
