Most people would never consider camping on the high plains, but then most people have never tried it. I recommend mid-May to mid-June when the grass is green, the wildflowers are in bloom & the prairie is alive. I grew up just three hours due north of the Buttes in Western Nebraska, so I have a deep appreciation for special places like this. The beautiful piano solo is by native Montanan Philip Aaberg and is appropriately titled "High Plains" off the CD of the same name on the Windham Hill label. I highly recommend you buy it. Aerial photography is by former KMGH-TV 7 News pilot Rich Westra and photojournalist Steve Coppin, now with CNN. Please respect the raptor closures for nesting in spring.

A2012.093.249.01
Description: Nora Pratt interview in Pawnee, Oklahoma. She talks about losing her memory, and how she had fallen in her bathroom and hurt her head. She then starts discussing her childhood. She talks about bundles being stolen by a gentleman who came to visit from a museum that ended up in Chicago. This person was called James Murray and he was married to Nora's aunt. Garland prayed over these bundles when they went to Chicago because he felt so bad about them being stolen. They are asking if anyone knows what happened to White Eagle's bundle and how it might have been one of the ones stolen. She then begins to talk about her family tree and lineage and how some of the children born in her family were sent to other people to be raised and how one of her little children was a "blue baby." They talk about who have bundles. A lot of people think that bundles can bring you bad luck now, but it used to be thought they were sacred and could bring you prosperity and take care of them. They talk about how if you don't take good care of the bundles then it knows and will make you sick. Nora says you should take good care of the bundle and not whistle inside the house, you should always tell the bundle where you are going and ask it to take care of the house while you are away. She told her kids not to sell it when she dies and that they must find a good place for it to go. They then talk about arrows and how they were also stolen and how that brought about a lot of bad luck to the Pawnee. Nora states that they were very sacred and once they were taken, it made the tribe terribly upset. There is a stoppage in the tape at 46:00. It begins again at 52:00. When the conversation begins again, they are talking about family showing up in a vision wanting to come and talk to her in the middle of the night. Nora is cooking for Martha and she talks about people who have been away from the tribe coming back and acting "more Indian," than those people who have been around forever. She doesn't believe they are being true and honest. They talk about owls and what the Ioway and Otoes think about the meaning of owls, how it was a warning of death or sickness. Martha says that an owl used to come out when Garland got sick, but that he would always say "there is the friendly owl." Martha says that it was because he didn't want to worry her. At 1:30:00, the tape breaks back into the interview, but there is an unknown man's voice. Tape stops again at 1:32:00 and the rest is blank.

This special symposium celebrates the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian’s landmark exhibition, Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations, and the notable book of the same title that accompanies the exhibition. In this segment, Judy Woodruff, Co-Anchor, PBS NewsHour, and Mark Trahant, Atwood Chair of Journalism, University of Alaska Anchorage, interview Kevin Gover, Director of the National Museum of the American Indian, and Suzan Shown Harjo, Guest Curator, about the exhibition. Judy Woodruff is the Co-Anchor and Managing Editor of the PBS NewsHour with Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. A distinguished broadcast journalist, she has covered politics and other news for more than three decades at CNN, NBC, and PBS. For 12 years, Woodruff served as anchor and senior correspondent for CNN, where her duties included anchoring the weekday program, “Inside Politics.” At PBS from 1983 to 1993, she was the chief Washington correspondent for The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. From 1984-1990, she also anchored PBS' award-winning weekly documentary series, “Frontline with Judy Woodruff.” In addition, she anchors a monthly program for Bloomberg Television, “Conversations with Judy Woodruff.” Mark Trahant (Shoshone-Bannock Tribes) is at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he currently serves as the Atwood Journalism Chair. An independent print and broadcast journalist, he blogs and posts often on Twitter. Trahant was recently a Kaiser Media Fellow and was previously editor of the editorial page for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. A former president of the Native American Journalists Association, Trahant is the author of The Last Great Battle of the Indian Wars, about Henry Jackson, Forrest Gerard, and the campaign for American Indian self-determination. Kevin Gover (Pawnee) is the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and a former professor of law at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University (ASU). He served on the faculty of the university’s Indian Legal Program and was co-executive director of ASU’s American Indian Policy Institute. From 1997 to 2001 Gover was the assistant secretary for Indian Affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior. His tenure in that position is perhaps best known for his apology to Native American people for the historical conduct of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee), president of The Morning Star Institute, a national Indian rights organization founded in 1984, is a writer, curator, and policy advocate who has helped Native Nations recover sacred places and more than one million acres of land. Since 1975, she has developed key federal Indian law, including the most important national policy advances in the modern era for the protection of Native American ancestors, arts, cultures, languages, and religious freedom. A poet and an award-winning columnist, her work appears in numerous publications, and she received the Institute of American Indian Arts’ first honorary doctorate of humanities awarded to a woman. Dr. Harjo is a founder of the National Museum of the American Indian and has served as a guest curator and editor of this and various museum projects.
This symposium was webcast and recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. on September 18. 2014.

Description: Nora Pratt continued from 2012.093.049 Martha and Nora are talking about quilts at the beginning of the tape. They discuss the Ghost Dance, Garland and other rituals. They talk about dancing, what women did, and how the men still don't talk about things that used to be the women's work. The tape messes up at 36:00 and so Martha retells what Nora was saying. She tells about a map on a hide and how the man who carries the map says that the further he goes, the heavier the hide gets. She asked Nora about the significance, but Nora didn't know what that was. She talks about one of her daughter's friends trying to commit suicide after her husband has an affair. The tape stops at 44:00 and starts back up at 45:40, Martha is commenting on her trip to visit Nora again. She is describing her impressions of a race that Nora was telling her about the map of the world. An old man does the job of running, people run after him or run to him as he is carrying the map. She also talks about camping and the South Band families who used to come and camp with her and her parents. Tape stops at 1:00:00, but you can hear Martha mumbling in the background. Stops completely at 1:06:00 and is the end of the recording.
