Ralph H. Young

Ralph H. Young (December 17, 1889 – January 23, 1962) was an American football player, coach of football and basketball, college athletics administrator, and state legislator. He was the head football coach at DePauw University (1915), Kalamazoo College (1916–1917, 1919–1922), and Michigan Agricultural College/Michigan State College, now Michigan State University, (1923–1927). During his career as a head coach, he compiled record of 56–41–3, including an 18–22–1 mark at Michigan Agricultural/State. Young was also the head basketball coach at DePauw during the 1915–16 season and Kalamazoo from 1916 to 1923, tallying a career college basketball mark of 100–45. In addition, he served as Michigan State's first athletic director, from 1923 until 1954.

Young served three terms in the Michigan Legislature, representing the East Lansing district. In 1962, he was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. He was elected to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979 and the Kalamazoo College Hall of Fame in 1986.

Ralph F. Young

Ralph F. Young is an American historian. He is the author of the popular textbook Dissent in America: Voices that Shaped a Nation and teaches history at Temple University.

Biography

Young grew up outside New York City and attended Houghton College. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at Michigan State University. Young's dissertation was about Puritans in the 1600s and their impact on England. He protested the Vietnam War.

Young taught at the University of London and Bremen University in Germany for several years. After moving back to the United States, he owned a bookstore in Philadelphia and began writing novels. One of his novels won the Suntory Prize for suspense fiction. In 1996, he became an adjunct professor at Penn State University.

In 2000, Young was hired as a full-time instructor at Temple University. At Temple, Young created the popular teach-ins, during which students and professors examine current issues in light of historical events. He invited an Iraq War veteran to a teach-in in 2004 and Temple students discussed the nature of terrorism with him.

Ralph Young (baseball)

Ralph Stuart "Pep" Young (born September 19, 1888 – January 24, 1965) was an American professional baseball second baseman. During his nine Major League Baseball seasons, he played with the New York Yankees (1913), Detroit Tigers (1915–21), and Philadelphia Athletics (1922).

Background

Young was a right-handed second baseman and switch hitter. He began his Major League career in April 1913 as a shortstop for the New York Yankees, but only lasted seven games. In those seven games, Young struggled with an .067 batting average in 15 at bats and also committed five errors.

Detroit Tigers

Despite his inauspicious start, the Detroit Tigers gave him a second chance in 1915, and he became their starting second baseman for the next seven years (1915–21). In 1915, his first season for Detroit, Young had a .243 batting average, but a much more respectable .339 on-base percentage. This was a pattern that followed Young through much of his career. In nine seasons, Young had a batting average of .247 and an on-base percentage of .339.

Ralph Young (singer)

Ralph Young (July 1, 1918 – August 22, 2008) was an American singer and actor. He was best known as the partner of Tony Sandler in the singing duo of Sandler and Young.

Ralph Young, one half of the celebrated international singing duo "Sandler & Young," died August 22, 2008. He was 90. The New York-born and raised Young died of unspecified causes at his home in Palm Springs, CA after a brief illness. From the 1960s through the early 90s, the tuxedo-clad duo released 22 albums, headlined major hotel and casino showrooms in both the U.S. and abroad, and made countless guest appearances on top-rated television variety shows. Young is survived by his wife, Arlene; his children, Neil, Arleen, Ron (Lisa), Guy (Bobbi), Lauren, Rachel (Jose); and his eight granddaughters and grandson, Allison, Caitie, Darcy, Morgan, Riley, Jordan, Allie, Piper and Brody.

He died in Palm Springs, California and is buried at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California.

Ralph Young (Florida college football coach)

Ralph Young is an American football coach in the United States.

Early life

Young was born in Clearwater, Florida. He went to Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, and played as a linebacker in the Parsons Wildcats college team under coach Chelo Huerta.

Coaching career

Coach Young was the head college football coach for the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs located in Marshall, Minnesota. He held that position for the 1971 and 1972 seasons. His coaching record at Southwest Minnesota State was 3 wins and 17 losses. As of the conclusion of the 2010 season, this ranks him #9 at Southwest Minnesota State in total wins and #10 at the school in winning percentage (.150).
