The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or sometimes USEPA) is an agency of the U.S. federal government which was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA was proposed by President Richard Nixon and began operation on December 2, 1970, after Nixon signed an executive order. The order establishing the EPA was ratified by committee hearings in the House and Senate. The agency is led by its Administrator, who is appointed by the president and approved by Congress. The current administrator is Gina McCarthy. The EPA is not a Cabinet department, but the administrator is normally given cabinet rank.
The EPA has its headquarters in Washington, D.C., regional offices for each of the agency's ten regions, and 27 laboratories. The agency conducts environmental assessment, research, and education. It has the responsibility of maintaining and enforcing national standards under a variety of environmental laws, in consultation with state, tribal, and local governments. It delegates some permitting, monitoring, and enforcement responsibility to U.S. states and the federally recognized tribes. EPA enforcement powers include fines, sanctions, and other measures. The agency also works with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts.
The NowCast is a weighted average of hourly air monitoring data used by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for real-time reporting of the Air Quality Index (AQI) for PM (PM10 or PM2.5) data.
The NowCast is computed from the most recent 12 hours of PM monitoring data, but the NowCast weights the most recent hours of data more heavily than an ordinary 12-hour average when pollutant levels are changing. The NowCast is used in lieu of a 24-hour average PM concentration in the calculation of the AQI until an entire calendar day of hourly concentrations has been monitored.
Let c1,c2,...c12 represent the hourly PM concentrations for the most recent 12-hour period, with c1 the most recent hourly value, and let cmin and cmax represent the minimum and maximum hourly concentration for the 12-hour period.
Define:
and let
With these definitions the NowCast is given by:
For the special case where there is no variability in the hourly values, cmin = cmax, w = 1, and the NowCast reduces to the twelve-hour average:
It Gets Better is an Internet-based 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in the United States by gay activist, author, media pundit, and journalist Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller on September 21, 2010, in response to the suicides of teenagers who were bullied because they were gay or because their peers suspected that they were gay. Its goal is to prevent suicide among LGBT youth by having gay adults convey the message that these teens' lives will improve. The project has grown rapidly: over 200 videos were uploaded in the first week, and the project's YouTube channel reached the 650 video limit in the next week. The project is now organized on its own website, the It Gets Better Project, and includes more than 50,000 entries from people of all sexual orientations, including many celebrities; the videos have received over 50 million views.
A book of essays from the project was released in March 2011. The project was given the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Governor's Award at the 64th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for "strategically, creatively and powerfully utilizing the media to educate and inspire," according to the academy's chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum.

Each story is not the same, but what each story tells us is how important it is to find a supportive environment, so that each person may find the strength to be open about who they are. It is mandatory to sample isokinetically through two sampling points 90° to one another. The required number of sampling points depends on the distance (number of Øs) downstream to a disturbance to flow.

This video describes a solution to the severe health risks caused by mercury emissions from small-scale gold processing. Small scale gold buying and refining facilities, or gold shops, located in over 55 countries throughout the world, are an important part of the artisanal and small-scale gold production process, and are a major cause of air pollution from mercury. EPA and Argonne National Laboratory worked together to design a low-cost mercury capture system that is simple to build and install, using locally available materials. The system reduces mercury emissions by at least 80 percent. For more information about the Mercury Capture System, go to www.epa.gov/international/toxics. For ...

Dr. Gayle Hagler, an EPA environmental engineer, uses an electric, zero-emissions "air-sniffing" vehicle to learn more about air quality near roadways. Her work is part of a larger research effort by EPA to understand the health impacts of major roadway pollution. Kick off of an unprecedented month-long collaboration among scientists from EPA, NASA, NOAA, the State of Colorado, and other organizations in Golden, Colorado. The goal of DISCOVER- AQ is to determine if the air quality we breathe on the ground can be measured with satellites from space. In addition to providing technical expertise on measuring air quality, EPA will also evaluate the performance of new hand held sensor technology that is inexpensive and available to the public. Two universities, University of Maryland- Baltimore County and Millersville, are also participating – providing training to our future scientists. I WRITE TO claim a lost identity, of me
Ooh - I leave a message for you all
Written here the fear that are my
Destiny you see
Come behold madness you never saw
No love for killer babies
My blood is written on your walls
Oh it's time I leave ya now
My locomotive rages
Oh no you never heard me call
Oh I know you'll hear me now
I feel the rage that brings
The fame of that I need
I've now a face forever more
Living with the fears
That hear those fantasies in me
Come an see sadness you never saw
No love for killer babies
My pain is written on your walls
Oh it's time I leave you now
Mama look what you made me
Your locomotive killer calls
Oh I know you hear me now
Don't wait for me
Don't hate for me
Don't ask of what went wrong
Don't pray for me or wonder why
You've known this all along
I've sinned for you
I envy you
Your pain I'll know
I wanted love, you gave me none
I've come to take you home
Cause I've gone to meet my maker
I'm locomotive man
One killer baby's come to call
Cause I've gone to meet my maker
I am you Loco Man
I'm coming down to take you all
Oh God I'm coming
Read my words I'm coming
I got a gun I'm coming
You won't hear me coming
