KIM: Hey I’m Kim Myles from Home Made Simple on OWN. And today I’m going to show you how to make a cool tropical lamp using a hula skirt.
I love these tall rice paper lamps. Something really cool. But I want to turn this plane rice paper lamp into a cool Raffia Lamp. The concept is to take raffia hula skirts and create a fringe out of this that then we’re going to wind around the entire body of the lamp so that it’s cool and custom.
This project couldn’t be simpler. You divide that table skirt into four layers of fringe—just by masking off with tape. Measuring about four inches down, so just give me a nice clean line. Flip the skirt over. Then we take the back and what we get is custom raffia trim. Measure four more inches, do another and another. Just cut right above this line.
You’ve created your first piece of raffia fringe. And all I’m doing is I’m hitting the fringe with a little glue. Once you have the fringe cut out, all you’re doing is winding it around and up the body of the lampshade using hot glue. So, super simple.
A raffia lamp is a really natural lamp so designers all over the world use raffia to do all kinds of things. But what’s gotten really popular is decorating lamps with it, because it just gives you this really natural organic vibe. This lamp is fabulous, it is such a statement piece and it’s super fun. I love it.

Raffia palm
The Raffia palms (Raphia) are a genus of about twenty species of palms native to tropical regions of Africa, and especially Madagascar, with one species (R. taedigera) also occurring in Central and South America. They are the source of raffia fibers, which are the veins of the leaves.
They grow up to 16 m (52.5 ft) tall and are remarkable for their compound pinnate leaves, the longest in the plant kingdom; leaves of R. regalis up to 25 m (82.38 ft) long and 3 m (9.84 ft) wide are known. The plants are either monocarpic, flowering once and then dying after the seeds are mature, or hapaxanthic. Some species have individual stems which die after fruiting, but have a root system which remains alive and sends up new stems which fruit.

KIM: Hey I’m Kim Myles from Home Made Simple on OWN. And today I’m going to show you how to make a cool tropical lamp using a hula skirt.
I love these tall rice paper lamps. Something really cool. But I want to turn this plane rice paper lamp into a cool Raffia Lamp. The concept is to take raffia hula skirts and create a fringe out of this that then we’re going to wind around the entire body of the lamp so that it’s cool and custom.
This project couldn’t be simpler. You divide that table skirt into four layers of fringe—just by masking off with tape. Measuring about four inches down, so just give me a nice clean line. Flip the skirt over. Then we take the back and what we get is custom raffia trim. Measure four more inches, do another and another. Just cut right above this line.
You’ve created your first piece of raffia fringe. And all I’m doing is I’m hitting the fringe with a little glue. Once you have the fringe cut out, all you’re doing is winding it around and up the body of the lampshade using hot glue. So, super simple.
A raffia lamp is a really natural lamp so designers all over the world use raffia to do all kinds of things. But what’s gotten really popular is decorating lamps with it, because it just gives you this really natural organic vibe. This lamp is fabulous, it is such a statement piece and it’s super fun. I love it.
