This video informs about the musical instrument celesta: its invention in 1886, its very specific sound generation or action mechanism, and particularly the making of the instrument in the Schiedmayer workshop. Schiedmayer started manufacturing the celesta in 1890 and is today the only celesta manufacturer in the world. The workshop tour shows the high level of craftsmanship and true artisan work that goes into each instrument. The best-known piece in which the celesta plays an important role is certainly The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy from Tchaikovsky’s ballett The Nutcracker. But many classical and modern composers use the celesta for their orchestral works due to the unique, always intriguing and enchanting sound of the instrument. As for the celesta’s presence in other music genres, John Williams‘ soundtrack Hedwig’s Theme from the Harry Potter movie is a perfect example.

"Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", is one of the best-known compositions by Bartók. Commissioned by Paul Sacher to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the chamber orchestra Basler Kammerorchester, the score is dated 7 September 1936. The work was premiered in Basel, Switzerland on 21 January 1937 by the chamber orchestra conducted by Sacher, and it was published the same year by Universal Edition.
As its title suggests, the piece is written for string instruments (violins, violas, cellos, double basses, and harp), percussion instruments (xylophone, snare drum, cymbals, tam-tam, bass drum, and timpani) and celesta. The ensemble also includes a piano, which may be classified as either a percussion or string instrument (the celesta player also plays piano during 4-hand passages).
Bartók divides the strings into two groups which he directs should be placed antiphonally on opposite sides of the stage, and he makes use of antiphonal effects particularly in the second and fourth movements. The first and third movement are slow, the second and fourth quick. All movements are written without key signature.
- The first movement is a slow fugue. Its time signature changes constantly. It is based around the note A, on which the movement begins and ends. It begins on muted strings, and as more voices enter the texture thickens and the music becomes louder until the climax. Mutes are then removed, and the music becomes gradually quieter over gentle celesta arpeggios. The movement ends with the second phrase of the fugue subject played softly over its inversion. Material from the first movement can be seen as serving as the basis for the later movements, and the fugue subject recurs in different guises at points throughout the piece.
- The second movement is quick, with a theme in 2/4 time which is transformed into 3/8 time towards the end. It is marked with loud syncopic piano and percussion accents in a whirling dance, evolving in an extended pizzicato section, with a piano concerto-like conclusion.
- The third movement is slow, an example of what is often called Bartók's "Night music". It features timpani glissandi, which was an unusual technique at the time of the work's composition, as well as a prominent part for the xylophone. It is also commonly thought that the rhythm of the xylophone solo that opens the third movement is based on the Fibonacci sequence as this "written-out accelerando/ritardando" uses the rhythm 1:2:3:5:8:5:3:2:1.
- The fourth movement, which begins with notes on the timpani and strummed pizzicato chords on the strings, has the character of a lively folk dance.
It is believed that Dmitri Shostakovich parodied this piece in his Symphony No. 13, in response to Bartók's own mockery of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 in his Concerto for Orchestra.

As I said it on Facebook/Twitter account, I was impressed by the success of my organ cover of this theme. So I decide to cover it on a very special instrument.. It's a celesta ! Sounds like a music box but you play it just like a piano ! Hammers, connected to the clavier are strucking metal/steel plates suspended over wooden resonator. Sounds so much like the music box original version of this theme !

The celesta (
/sɨˈlɛstə/) or celeste ( /sɨˈlɛst/) is a struck idiophone operated by a keyboard. Its appearance is similar to that of an upright piano (four- or five-octave) or of a large wooden music box (three-octave). The keys are connected to hammers which strike a graduated set of metal (usually steel) plates suspended over wooden resonators. On four or five octave models one pedal is usually available to sustain or dampen the sound. The three-octave instruments do not have a pedal because of their small "table-top" design. One of the best-known works that makes use of the celesta is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker.
The sound of the celesta is similar to that of the glockenspiel, but with a much softer and more subtle timbre. This quality gave the instrument its name, celeste meaning "heavenly" in French.
The celesta is a transposing instrument; it sounds an octave higher than the written pitch. The original French instrument had a five-octave range, but because the lowest octave was considered somewhat unsatisfactory, it was omitted from later models. The standard French four-octave instrument is now gradually being replaced in symphony orchestras by a larger, five-octave German model. Although it is a member of the percussion family, in orchestral terms it is more properly considered as a member of the keyboard section and usually played by a keyboardist. The celesta part is normally written on two bracketed staves, called a grand staff.

Allegro molto Chicago Symphony Orchestra James Levine Bartók wrote some of his finest music for the Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, in whom he found a particularly sympathetic champion. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, written for Sacher in 1936, explores with great refinement and mastery the musical concepts that Bartók had been developing since the mid-'20s. In the Piano Concerto No. 1, Bartók explored the percussive elements of the piano, coupling it effectively with percussion only in the introduction to the concerto's slow movement. In Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Bartók ingeniously sets the piano with the percussion instruments, where its melodic and harmonic material functions in support of the two string choirs. Since the early '30s, Bartók had also incorporated elements of Baroque music into his compositions, inspired partly by his exploration of pre-Classical keyboard composers such as Scarlatti, Rameau and Couperin. In reflection of this, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta evokes the Baroque concerto grosso, with its two antiphonal string orchestras separated by a battery of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. The work's prosaic title was actually just a working title which was subsequently allowed to stand. The opening movement, Andante tranquillo, is a slow fugue on a chromatic melody that springs from a five-note cell, each subsequent phrase growing in length and elaborating on its predecessor. At this point, the two string orchestras play together. As the string voices accumulate, the fugue's texture increases in complexity and the chromatic implications of the theme are brought to a rigorously dissonant fulfillment. The fugue climaxes at its apogee with an ominous rumble from the timpani and a loud stroke on the tam-tam. As the fugue folds in upon itself the celesta makes its first entrance with an arpeggiated chord, mysterious and remote. The work subsequently grows from the motivic material explored in this first movement. Bartók deploys antiphonal string choirs for the second movement, a fast, fugitive piece in which the two orchestras chase each other through a breathtaking series of elaborations on the main theme. In the percussion section, piano, xylophone, and harp take the lead while two side drums (with and without snares) provide emphatic punctuation. The third movement is one of Bartók's most accomplished "night music" pieces, with cricket-like notes from the xylophone, eerie timpani glissandi, fragmentary murmurs, and frightened exclamations from the strings, along with the always-mysterious notes of the celesta floating clear and sphinx-like over the nocturnal weft. The finale, a dance of energy and abandon, restores the antiphonal deployment of the strings and juxtaposes the diatonic aspects of the work's main theme with its chromatic elements. There are also some striking touches like the furious, strummed four-note chords in the violins, violas and cellos that opens the movement, a theme midway through that is based on a repeated note first hammered out on piano and xylophone, and then a grand peroration of the initial fugue theme, now with its intervals doubled and richly harmonized. "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", is one of the best-known compositions by Bartók. Commissioned by Paul Sacher to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the chamber orchestra Basler Kammerorchester, the score is dated 7 September 1936. The work was premiered in Basel, Switzerland on 21 January 1937 by the chamber orchestra conducted by Sacher, and it was published the same year by Universal Edition.
As its title suggests, the piece is written for string instruments (violins, violas, cellos, double basses, and harp), percussion instruments (xylophone, snare drum, cymbals, tam-tam, bass drum, and timpani) and celesta. The ensemble also includes a piano, which may be classified as either a percussion or string instrument (the celesta player also plays piano during 4-hand passages).
Bartók divides the strings into two groups which he directs should be placed antiphonally on opposite sides of the stage, and he makes use of antiphonal effects particularly in the second and fourth movements. The first and third movement are slow, the second and fourth quick. All movements are written without key signature.
- The first movement is a slow fugue. Its time signature changes constantly. It is based around the note A, on which the movement begins and ends. It begins on muted strings, and as more voices enter the texture thickens and the music becomes louder until the climax. Mutes are then removed, and the music becomes gradually quieter over gentle celesta arpeggios. The movement ends with the second phrase of the fugue subject played softly over its inversion. Material from the first movement can be seen as serving as the basis for the later movements, and the fugue subject recurs in different guises at points throughout the piece.
- The second movement is quick, with a theme in 2/4 time which is transformed into 3/8 time towards the end. It is marked with loud syncopic piano and percussion accents in a whirling dance, evolving in an extended pizzicato section, with a piano concerto-like conclusion.
- The third movement is slow, an example of what is often called Bartók's "Night music". It features timpani glissandi, which was an unusual technique at the time of the work's composition, as well as a prominent part for the xylophone. It is also commonly thought that the rhythm of the xylophone solo that opens the third movement is based on the Fibonacci sequence as this "written-out accelerando/ritardando" uses the rhythm 1:2:3:5:8:5:3:2:1.
- The fourth movement, which begins with notes on the timpani and strummed pizzicato chords on the strings, has the character of a lively folk dance.
It is believed that Dmitri Shostakovich parodied this piece in his Symphony No. 13, in response to Bartók's own mockery of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 in his Concerto for Orchestra.

The first and third movement are slow, the second and fourth quick. All movements are written without key signature.
- The first movement is a slow fugue. Its time signature changes constantly. It is based around the note A, on which the movement begins and ends. It begins on muted strings, and as more voices enter the texture thickens and the music becomes louder until the climax. Mutes are then removed, and the music becomes gradually quieter over gentle celesta arpeggios. The movement ends with the second phrase of the fugue subject played softly over its inversion. Material from the first movement can be seen as serving as the basis for the later movements, and the fugue subject recurs in different guises at points throughout the piece.
- The second movement is quick, with a theme in 2/4 time which is transformed into 3/8 time towards the end. It is marked with loud syncopic piano and percussion accents in a whirling dance, evolving in an extended pizzicato section, with a piano concerto-like conclusion.
- The third movement is slow, an example of what is often called Bartók's "Night music". It features timpani glissandi, which was an unusual technique at the time of the work's composition, as well as a prominent part for the xylophone. It is also commonly thought that the rhythm of the xylophone solo that opens the third movement is based on the Fibonacci sequence as this "written-out accelerando/ritardando" uses the rhythm 1:2:3:5:8:5:3:2:1.
- The fourth movement, which begins with notes on the timpani and strummed pizzicato chords on the strings, has the character of a lively folk dance.
It is believed that Dmitri Shostakovich parodied this piece in his Symphony No. 13, in response to Bartók's own mockery of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 in his Concerto for Orchestra.

Sounds like a music box but you play it just like a piano ! Hammers, connected to the clavier are strucking metal/steel plates suspended over wooden resonator. Sounds so much like the music box original version of this theme !

Bartók wrote some of his finest music for the Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, in whom he found a particularly sympathetic champion. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, written for Sacher in 1936, explores with great refinement and mastery the musical concepts that Bartók had been developing since the mid-'20s. In the Piano Concerto No. 1, Bartók explored the percussive elements of the piano, coupling it effectively with percussion only in the introduction to the concerto's slow movement. In Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Bartók ingeniously sets the piano with the percussion instruments, where its melodic and harmonic material functions in support of the two string choirs.
Since the early '30s, Bartók had also incorporated elements of Baroque music into his compositions, inspired partly by his exploration of pre-Classical keyboard composers such as Scarlatti, Rameau and Couperin. Bartók wrote some of his finest music for the Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, in whom he found a particularly sympathetic champion. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, written for Sacher in 1936, explores with great refinement and mastery the musical concepts that Bartók had been developing since the mid-'20s. In the Piano Concerto No. 1, Bartók explored the percussive elements of the piano, coupling it effectively with percussion only in the introduction to the concerto's slow movement. In Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Bartók ingeniously sets the piano with the percussion instruments, where its melodic and harmonic material functions in support of the two string choirs.
Since the early '30s, Bartók had also incorporated elements of Baroque music into his compositions, inspired partly by his exploration of pre-Classical keyboard composers such as Scarlatti, Rameau and Couperin. In reflection of this, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta evokes the Baroque concerto grosso, with its two antiphonal string orchestras separated by a battery of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. The work's prosaic title was actually just a working title which was subsequently allowed to stand.
The opening movement, Andante tranquillo, is a slow fugue on a chromatic melody that springs from a five-note cell, each subsequent phrase growing in length and elaborating on its predecessor. At this point, the two string orchestras play together. As the string voices accumulate, the fugue's texture increases in complexity and the chromatic implications of the theme are brought to a rigorously dissonant fulfillment. The fugue climaxes at its apogee with an ominous rumble from the timpani and a loud stroke on the tam-tam. As the fugue folds in upon itself the celesta makes its first entrance with an arpeggiated chord, mysterious and remote. The work subsequently grows from the motivic material explored in this first movement.
Bartók deploys antiphonal string choirs for the second movement, a fast, fugitive piece in which the two orchestras chase each other through a breathtaking series of elaborations on the main theme. In the percussion section, piano, xylophone, and harp take the lead while two side drums (with and without snares) provide emphatic punctuation. The third movement is one of Bartók's most accomplished "night music" pieces, with cricket-like notes from the xylophone, eerie timpani glissandi, fragmentary murmurs, and frightened exclamations from the strings, along with the always-mysterious notes of the celesta floating clear and sphinx-like over the nocturnal weft. The finale, a dance of energy and abandon, restores the antiphonal deployment of the strings and juxtaposes the diatonic aspects of the work's main theme with its chromatic elements. There are also some striking touches like the furious, strummed four-note chords in the violins, violas and cellos that opens the movement, a theme midway through that is based on a repeated note first hammered out on piano and xylophone, and then a grand peroration of the initial fugue theme, now with its intervals doubled and richly harmonized. Música para cuerda, percusión y celesta (Sz. 106, BB 114) es una de las obras más conocidas del compositor húngaro Béla Bartók. Encargada por Paul Sacher para celebrar el décimo aniversario de su Orquesta de Cámara de Basilea, la partitura está fechada el 7 deseptiembre de 1936, y su estreno se produjo en Basilea el 21 de enero de 1937 por la orquesta dedicataria, dirigida por el propio Sacher.
La orquestación se compone de dos grupos de instrumentos de cuerda (violines, violas, violonchelos y contrabajos), que se dan la réplica entre sí en lados opuestos del escenario, y a la vez se enfrentan a un grupo central integrado por la celesta, un arpa, timbales, percusión (xilófono, caja, bombo, platillos y tam-tam), así como un piano, utilizado principalmente en funciones percusivas. La disposición espacial enfrentada de los dos grupos de cuerda permite al compositor utilizar efectos estereofónicos, particularmente perceptibles en los movimientos segundo y cuarto.
El primer movimiento es una fuga lenta, cuyos compases cambian constantemente. Está basado alrededor de la nota la, con la que empieza y concluye el movimiento, cuya estructura se basa, como en otras composiciones del autor, en proporciones relacionadas con el número de oro. Comienza con las cuerdas en sordina, y según se incorporan más voces la textura orquestal se hace más densa y la música se torna más fuerte hasta el clímax. Se retiran entonces las sordinas y la música se vuelve gradualmente más tranquila sobre suaves arpegios de la celesta. El movimiento termina con el tema de la fuga tocado suavemente sobre su inversión. El material temático de este primer movimiento reaparecerá después de distintas formas en los movimientos finales, sirviendo de nexo a toda la obra.
El segundo movimiento es rápido, con un tema en compás de 2/4, que se transformará en 3/8 hacia el final. Se caracteriza por los fuertes acentos sincopados del piano y de la percusión, en una danza vertiginosa, que evoluciona en una extensa sección en pizzicato, con una conclusión al modo de un concierto para piano.
El tercer movimiento es un nocturno lento, característico del autor, y presenta glissandi de los timbales, lo que en la fecha de composición de la obra era una técnica poco usual, así como una intervención prominente del xilófono. Las cinco secciones del movimiento están ligadas por las cuatro frases del tema del primer movimiento, expresando así la continuidad de la obra.
El último movimiento comienza con notas en los timbales y pizzicati rasgueados de las cuerdas y tiene el carácter de una vivaz danza campesina. En la coda aparece de nuevo el tema de la fuga delprimer movimiento con los intervalos literalmente doblados.
En el conjunto de la obra puede apreciarse una importante invención rítmica, y un lenguaje cromático de esencia modal (con una nota sirviendo siempre de polaridad al discurso musical); así como la utilización de fuentes folklóricas e impresionistas.
