Memory's quality

Edit Deccan Herald 07 Mar 2015
A characteristic quality of memory is its availability. Faced with assembly lines of information and the protean slipperiness of the past that makes it difficult to pin it down with a finger of honesty, fiction is the answer to keeping our lives whole ... Everything opens in medias res, he says, opening his story “in the midst of things” ... Nicholas and Nem are like Gautama Buddha and Ananda, Poseidon and Pelops ... She smiled ... ....

Readings are a startling way to discover a book, through the author's own voice. Read the way it was originally written, it is like tasting a variant of a dish you’ve eaten before — and appreciating the nuances ... Inspired by one of the lesser-known Greek myths about Poseidon and his affection for a young boy named Pelops, Seahorse is Pariat’s retelling, set in contemporary London and 1990s Delhi ... How (Not) to Repeat History

Edit Huffington Post 16 Nov 2014
I wonder if we have it wrong. The philosopher George Santayana warned ... Maybe that sets it up exactly backward ... The father of Atreus, Pelops, won his wife in a chariot race to the death that was fixed so his competitor, her father, would be the loser. The father of Pelops, Tantalus, appears to have initiated the misery by slaying his son in order to test whether the gods were omniscient, feeding the bits of his body to them ... ....
