This is a behind the scenes, step by step, explanation of how the professionals tan leather, and how they tan it right. There are a lot of steps, that if not correctly followed, will produce low quality and even dangerous carcinogenic leather. Hope you enjoy. Note: the tannery just let me know that it is not accurate to infer that hot dogs are made from this meat, but rather dog type foods after a great refining process. And the fats are not used in the raw for a chaffing lubricant between the legs.or for a healing balm. And, they mentioned that there are a number of reasons why Chromium III could turn into cancerous Chromium VI and that it is a culmination of things rather than just that process. This is very rare and not a concern.

The leather maul I like and use is made by Maul Master and is the economically priced mauls sold by The Weaver Leather Company: http://www.leathersupply.com The part number for the maul I use in this YouTube Video is 65-2334 and it weighs 2 lbs and has 1-5/8" striking surface. I also have the lighter Maul Master II and it weighs 22 oz. and it has the same width striking surface. I use the lighter maul for beveling and background work on my tooling and caving projects.
I start off by marking a 3/8" channel and cut the border with my Barry King Leather Tools swivel knife. I like cutting a border like this because it gives depth to my stamping design.
Have patience with this leather tool and practice on some scrap leather before you do your actual leathercraft project.
A running border stamp like this works and looks good on saddles, belts, guitar straps, billfolds, purses and many other custom leather projects.

In this video, I am going to show you how I do basketweave stamping on a key wallet I am working on.
The key wallet is simple, two pieces of 1.5mm thick veg tan cow leather glued together, with a brass trigger snap, and a D-ring loop for the keys, and a snap for closure.
However, this video is not about how the key wallet is made, but how the stamping is done instead.
I hope I can show you how I do it by showing you step by step.

The leather maul I like and use is made by Maul Master and is the economically priced mauls sold by The Weaver Leather Company: http://www.leathersupply.com The part number for the maul I use in this YouTube Video is 65-2334 and it weighs 2 lbs and has 1-5/8" striking surface. I also have the lighter Maul Master II and it weighs 22 oz. and it has the same width striking surface. I use the lighter maul for beveling and background work on my tooling and caving projects.
I start off by marking a 3/8" channel and cut the border with my Barry King Leather Tools swivel knife. I like cutting a border like this because it gives depth to my stamping design.
Have patience with this leather tool and practice on some scrap leather before you do your actual leathercraft project.
A running border stamp like this works and looks good on saddles, belts, guitar straps, billfolds, purses and many other custom leather projects.

I also have the lighter Maul Master II and it weighs 22 oz. and it has the same width striking surface. I use the lighter maul for beveling and background work on my tooling and caving projects.
I start off by marking a 3/8" channel and cut the border with my Barry King Leather Tools swivel knife. I like cutting a border like this because it gives depth to my stamping design.
Have patience with this leather tool and practice on some scrap leather before you do your actual leathercraft project.
A running border stamp like this works and looks good on saddles, belts, guitar straps, billfolds, purses and many other custom leather projects.

Because of the position of its fibers, the leather material has more elasticity in one direction (to the left and right sides) than the other direction upwards and downwards (from the head to the tail) that is stiffer.
It is important to add that the stretching is not evenly if we scrutinize all over the surface of our leather hide (e.g back and butt areas are stiffer than belly areas).
Leather does not behave as vinyl that it stretches evenly along its stretchy side.
Taking advantage of this little knowledge, we can mold leather onto some pieces which need to be customized with this beautiful material.
In the case I show in the video, I have decided to do it one piece; but to ease the job, we could cut and sew in some required parts...it depends on the upholsterer's/owner's decision.

In this video you will learn to fix small tears and cracks in automotive leather with Scratchwizard’s leather repair kit.
On table.
You will need our leather repair kit, which includes leather filler, a palate knife, patching material, color-matched leather dye, leather cleaner, a scuff pad and 600 grit sandpaper. Additionally, you’ll need soapy water, a lint free cloth, tweezers, and a heat gun.
Chair on table. Simple green and towels.
It’s a good idea to give the entire seat a good general cleaning. This will reveal the true color of the leather and allow the repair materials to form a stronger bond. Very fine steel wool can help separate years of dirt and oils from the leather.
Leather cleaner and scuff pad.
Now use the supplied leather cleaner and scuff pad to clean and scuff the areas you’ll be repairing.

Seat with the big rip.
Don’t attempt to repair large rips like these. Have this repaired by an upholstery shop.

But you can repair a rip of this size. Here’s how.
Scissors and backing pad.
Cut out a piece of the supplied patch material. It should be roughly the shape of the tear, but about a ¼” larger around the edges.
Palette knife, filler, and tweezers
Apply a fine layer of leather filler to the patch. Now insert the patch into the hole. A pair of tweezers can be helpful. Wait an hour for the patch to bond to the underside of the leather.
[TITLE: CRACK REPAIR]

Apply fine layers of leather filler to the cracks, including the the tear you just repaired. You can use a heat gun on low setting to accelerate the drying of the filler. Check that the filler is try with your finger before proceeding to add another layer of filler.
Once you have filled above all cracks, and your filler is dry. Sand the filler with 600 grit sandpaper. Sand in one direction, like this. You may have to swap in fresh sandpaper when it gets filled with leather filler.
Spray can and heat gun
Apply the color-matched dye in light, thin coats. A heat gun will on a low setting will help to accelerate drying times. Once the filler is covered with dye, apply at least 2-3 more coats of dye to ensure durability.
When finished, avoid sitting in the chair for at least one hour.

Tooling and carving leather with Bruce Cheaney. In this YouTube video I show you how to "cut in" the design on saddle skirts for a custom saddle I am making. First I transfer the design from the paper pattern that I have sketched to the moist Hermann Oak saddle skirting. Next the design is cut into the leather with a Barry King swivel knife. Once the design is cut in on the one side it is then placed on the opposite side and the design is tapped off onto the saddle skirt. With a few leather tools you can create very unique designs http://youtu.be/rfv3iQYDUgs the leather tools used here are three craftool bevelers a small pear shader a veiner and a 888 craftool background tool plus the brass swivel knife with a hollow ground blade.

Tooling and carving leather with Bruce Cheaney. In this YouTube video I show you how to "cut in" the design on saddle skirts for a custom saddle I am making. First I transfer the design from the paper pattern that I have sketched to the moist Hermann Oak saddle skirting. Next the design is cut into the leather with a Barry King swivel knife. Once the design is cut in on the one side it is then placed on the opposite side and the design is tapped off onto the saddle skirt. With a few leather tools you can create very unique designs http://youtu.be/rfv3iQYDUgs the leather tools used here are three craftool bevelers a small pear shader a veiner and a 888 craftool background tool plus the brass swivel knife with a hollow ground blade.

This is a filthy Honda Accord which is perfect to demonstrate 3 different approaches to leather cleaning. The 3 techniques are "options" that might work for whatever car (based on condition, age, material, etc) you are working with. These are simply techniques, options, or "suggestions" of how I would ASSESS the current condition, then TEST each approach on the material. Please use caution on any interior surface when your restoring its condition. (In this case, its modern leather)
I hope this is a helpful discussion for everyone to see how leather and most plastics might be cleaned. (in this particularly bad scenario)
