6/30/2013 - Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press this Sunday, MSNBC star Rachel Maddow battled with Faith and Freedom Coalition chief Ralph Reed over gay marriage, with the two clashing over everything from this week's SCOTUS rulings to whether gay marriage opponents are "bigots."
"Gay people exist," Maddow said to Reed, "there's nothing that we can do that make more or less of us exist. And you've been arguing for a generation that public policy ought to essentially demean gay people as a way of expressing disapproval. But you don't make any less of us exist. You just are arguing in favor of discrimination."
"I really can't let that go," Reed responded. "This suggestion that because somebody wants to affirm the institution of marriage that they're ipso facto intolerant, by that argument, Barack Obama was intolerant 14 months ago." He added that, by that logic, Sens. Pat Leahy and Joe Biden and President Bill Clinton were all "bigots" for supporting the Defense of Marriage Act.
"Nobody is calling them bigots," Maddow pushed back.
MSNBC contributor Michael Eric Dyson added that the same arguments against gay marriage have been made in favor of white supremacy over black people. "It will destroy civilization, it will undermine the American family, it will challenge our civic institutions," Dyson mimicked. "In the American culture," he asserted, "people can change their mind, they can grow, they can think."
Later on during the discussion, Reed offered that evangelicals will make a nationwide effort during the next midterms to "elect legislators who will pass a constitutional amendment to ratify that marriage should be between a man and a woman."
But Maddow pounced, noting that Reed's previous efforts to elect Mitt Romney and throw out Iowan and Minnesotan fights against gay marriage all lost in November 2012.
"That was an effort turn out the evangelical vote," Reed responded, but Maddow shot back: "And it was great and they lost. But when oral arguments were made in this case, there were nine states that recognized marriage equality. By the time of the ruling, there were 12 states, and five minutes later there were 13 states.

Prompted by the escalating Cheney family feud, Crossfire co-host and conservative S.E. Cupp battled Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed on Tuesday night over gay marriage, saying that she could make a conservative case that the Republican Party should embrace the cause of gay marriage, an argument Reed found wholly unpersuasive.
"Isn't it time that your wing of the Republican Party accept and embrace good Republicans like the Log Cabin Republicans, like GOProud, like Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), like Rob Portman (R-OH)?" Cupp asked. "Don't you think it's time to recognize that in some ways the tide is turning, that we should be more inclusive of these values, without having to change our personal opinions of them?"
"If the tide had truly turned, then you wouldn't have thirty-six states and 70% of the American people defining it as a man and a woman, and you wouldn't need the courts to impose it," Reed said. "The same Millennials who today are more inclined to support same-sex marriage and are also more pro-life than their parents were. So the country became more pro-choice in the 70s and 80s and in the 90s and the last ten years became more pro-life. Just because something is moving in a particular direction, it's an analytical error to assume it's going to continue in that trend."

"To me, it seems like a conservative principle," Cupp said. "Why are we offering tax breaks to one set of people, and not to another set of people? Why are we privileging marriage, this institution conservatives absolutely love, for these people and not these people? Why are we celebrating family and not another kind of family? If we hate abortion so much, shouldn't we be supporting the right of adoption, for any two loving people to adopt babies that are unwanted?"
"There's a compelling state interest in those monogamous unions that are the best for children," Reed replied. "The social science on this is clear, and to treat other relationships as on par with that is just not accurate."
Co-host Van Jones interjected to say that it was heterosexuals, with their high divorce rates, who were "ruining marriage," a point with which Reed agreed.
"You know who's making marriage cool again?" Jones asked. "It's the lesbians and gays who have fought for it, who have stood for it, who have made it a cause for a generation."

Christopher Eric Hitchens (born April 13, 1949, in Portsmouth, England) is an Anglo-American author, journalist and literary critic. Currently living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation, Slate and Free Inquiry; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to other publications and has appeared regularly in the Wall Street Journal. His brother is British journalist Peter Hitchens.
Hitchens is known for his iconoclasm, anti-clericalism, atheism, antitheism, anti-fascism and anti-monarchism. He is also noted for his acerbic wit and his noisy departure from the Anglo-American political left. He was formerly a Trotskyist and a fixture in the left wing publications of Britain and America. But a series of disagreements beginning in the early 1990s led to his resignation from The Nation shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks. He is also known for his ardent admiration of George Orwell and Thomas Jefferson, and his iconoclastic criticism of Mother Teresa.
While Hitchens' idiosyncratic ideas and positions preclude easy classification, he is a vociferous critic of what he describes as "fascism with an Islamic face," and his critics have been known to describe him as a "neoconservative". Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation. In 2004, Hitchens stated that neoconservative support for US intervention in Bosnia and Iraq convinced him that he was "on the same side as the neo-conservatives" when it came to contemporary foreign policy issues. He has also been known to refer to his association with "temporary neocon allies".
Hitchens no longer considers himself a Trotskyist or a socialist; yet he maintains that his political views have not changed significantly. He points out that, throughout his career, he has been both an atheist and an antitheist, and that he has always remained a believer in the Enlightenment values of secularism, humanism and reason. Hitchens has launched a detailed attack on Religion in his book god Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. He has also stated that, while he "was very much in rebellion against the state" during his youth, he is now "much more inclined to stress... issues of individual liberty."
Hitchens became a United States citizen on his fifty-eighth birthday, April 13, 2007.

Rachel Anne Maddow (pronounced /ˈmædoʊ/; born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. Maddow hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor of a prime-time news program in the United States.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada. She has one older brother, David. Her father is of Russian and Dutch descent and her mother is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow's mother was raised a strict Roman Catholic, and Maddow herself grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and played three sports in high school. Referencing John Hughes films, she describes herself in high school as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl."

William "Bill" Maher, Jr. (
/ˈmɑːr/; born January 20, 1956) is an American stand-up comedian, television host, political commentator, author, and actor. Before his current role as the host of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher hosted a similar late-night talk show called Politically Incorrect originally on Comedy Central and later on ABC.
Maher is known for his political satire and sociopolitical commentary, which targets a wide swath of topics including religion, politics, bureaucracies of many kinds, political correctness, the mass media, greed among people and persons in positions of high political and social power, and the lack of intellectual curiosity in the electorate. He supports the legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage, and serves on the board of PETA. He is also a critic of religion and is an advisory board member of Project Reason, a foundation to promote scientific knowledge and secular values within society. In 2005, Maher ranked at number 38 on Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time. Bill Maher received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on September 14, 2010.

While Hitchens' idiosyncratic ideas and positions preclude easy classification, he is a vociferous critic of what he describes as "fascism with an Islamic face," and his critics have been known to describe him as a "neoconservative". 6/30/2013 - Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press this Sunday, MSNBC star Rachel Maddow battled with Faith and Freedom Coalition chief Ralph Reed over gay marriage, with the two clashing over everything from this week's SCOTUS rulings to whether gay marriage opponents are "bigots."
"Gay people exist," Maddow said to Reed, "there's nothing that we can do that make more or less of us exist. And you've been arguing for a generation that public policy ought to essentially demean gay people as a way of expressing disapproval. But you don't make any less of us exist. You just are arguing in favor of discrimination."
"I really can't let that go," Reed responded. "This suggestion that because somebody wants to affirm the institution of marriage that they're ipso facto intolerant, by that argument, Barack Obama was intolerant 14 months ago." He added that, by that logic, Sens. Pat Leahy and Joe Biden and President Bill Clinton were all "bigots" for supporting the Defense of Marriage Act.
"Nobody is calling them bigots," Maddow pushed back.
MSNBC contributor Michael Eric Dyson added that the same arguments against gay marriage have been made in favor of white supremacy over black people. "It will destroy civilization, it will undermine the American family, it will challenge our civic institutions," Dyson mimicked. "In the American culture," he asserted, "people can change their mind, they can grow, they can think."
Later on during the discussion, Reed offered that evangelicals will make a nationwide effort during the next midterms to "elect legislators who will pass a constitutional amendment to ratify that marriage should be between a man and a woman."
But Maddow pounced, noting that Reed's previous efforts to elect Mitt Romney and throw out Iowan and Minnesotan fights against gay marriage all lost in November 2012.
"That was an effort turn out the evangelical vote," Reed responded, but Maddow shot back: "And it was great and they lost. But when oral arguments were made in this case, there were nine states that recognized marriage equality. By the time of the ruling, there were 12 states, and five minutes later there were 13 states.

Prompted by the escalating Cheney family feud, Crossfire co-host and conservative S.E. Cupp battled Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed on Tuesday night over gay marriage, saying that she could make a conservative case that the Republican Party should embrace the cause of gay marriage, an argument Reed found wholly unpersuasive.
"Isn't it time that your wing of the Republican Party accept and embrace good Republicans like the Log Cabin Republicans, like GOProud, like Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), like Rob Portman (R-OH)?" Cupp asked. "Don't you think it's time to recognize that in some ways the tide is turning, that we should be more inclusive of these values, without having to change our personal opinions of them?"
"If the tide had truly turned, then you wouldn't have thirty-six states and 70% of the American people defining it as a man and a woman, and you wouldn't need the courts to impose it," Reed said. "The same Millennials who today are more inclined to support same-sex marriage and are also more pro-life than their parents were. So the country became more pro-choice in the 70s and 80s and in the 90s and the last ten years became more pro-life. Just because something is moving in a particular direction, it's an analytical error to assume it's going to continue in that trend."

"To me, it seems like a conservative principle," Cupp said. "Why are we offering tax breaks to one set of people, and not to another set of people? Why are we privileging marriage, this institution conservatives absolutely love, for these people and not these people? Why are we celebrating family and not another kind of family? If we hate abortion so much, shouldn't we be supporting the right of adoption, for any two loving people to adopt babies that are unwanted?"
"There's a compelling state interest in those monogamous unions that are the best for children," Reed replied. "The social science on this is clear, and to treat other relationships as on par with that is just not accurate."
Co-host Van Jones interjected to say that it was heterosexuals, with their high divorce rates, who were "ruining marriage," a point with which Reed agreed.
"You know who's making marriage cool again?" Jones asked. "It's the lesbians and gays who have fought for it, who have stood for it, who have made it a cause for a generation."

Hitchens, however, refuses to embrace this designation. In 2004, Hitchens stated that neoconservative support for US intervention in Bosnia and Iraq convinced him that he was "on the same side as the neo-conservatives" when it came to contemporary foreign policy issues. He has also been known to refer to his association with "temporary neocon allies".
Hitchens no longer considers himself a Trotskyist or a socialist; yet he maintains that his political views have not changed significantly. He points out that, throughout his career, he has been both an atheist and an antitheist, and that he has always remained a believer in the Enlightenment values of secularism, humanism and reason. Hitchens has launched a detailed attack on Religion in his book god Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. He has also stated that, while he "was very much in rebellion against the state" during his youth, he is now "much more inclined to stress... issues of individual liberty."
Hitchens became a United States citizen on his fifty-eighth birthday, April 13, 2007.

So we can put it in the interests of children, but I think that cuts both ways. And I think the ruling cuts against that argument.
I mean, gay people exist. There's nothing we can do in public policy that makes more or us exist or less of us exist. And you guys have been arguing for a generation that public policy ought to essentially demean gay people as a way of expressing disapproval of the fact that we exist. But you don't make any less of us exist. You just are arguing in favor of discrimination. And more discrimination doesn't make straight people's--

By that argument, 342 members of the House, 85 members of the Senate (including, by the way, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Pat Leahy) who all voted for this law, and Bill Clinton who signed it into law, were intolerant and motivated by an animus and a hatred for gays.

One early effort to institutionalize the Christian right as a politically active social movement began in 1974 when Dr. Robert Grant, an early movement leader, founded American Christian Cause to advocate Christian moral teachings in Southern California. Concerned that Christians overwhelmingly voted in favor of President Jimmy Carter in 1976, Grant expanded his movement and founded Christian Voice to mobilize Christian voters in favor of candidates who share their socially conservative values. In the late 1980s Pat Robertson founded the Christian Coalition, building from his 1988 presidential run, with Republican activist Ralph Reed, who became the spokesman for the Coalition. In 1992, the national Christian Coalition, Inc., headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, began producing voter guides, which it distributed to conservative Christian churches. Under the leadership of Reed and Robertson, the Coalition quickly became the most prominent voice in the conservative Christian movement, its influence culminating with an effort to support the election of a conservative Christian to the presidency in 1996. In addition, they have talked about attempting to intersperse the traditional moral issues associated with the Christian right into a broader message that emphasizes other political issues, such as healthcare, the economy, education and crime.[24] Focus on the Family's Visitor's Welcome Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Overtly partisan actions by churches could threaten their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status due to the Johnson Amendment of the Internal Revenue Code.[34] In one notable example, the former pastor of the East Waynesville Baptist Church in Waynesville, North Carolina "told the congregation that anyone who planned to vote for Democratic Sen. John Kerry should either leave the church or repent".[35] The church later expelled nine members who had voted for Kerry and refused to repent, which led to criticism on the national level. The pastor resigned and the ousted church members were allowed to return.[36]

In the late 1980s Pat Robertson founded the Christian Coalition of America, building from his 1988 presidential run, with Republican activist Ralph Reed, who became the spokesman for the Coalition. In 1992, the national Christian Coalition, Inc., headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, began producing voter guides, which it distributed to conservative Christian churches. Under the leadership of Reed and Robertson, the Coalition quickly became the most prominent voice in the conservative Christian movement, its influence culminating with an effort to support the election of a conservative Christian to the presidency in 1996. In addition, they have talked encouraged the convergence of conservative Christian ideology with political issues, such as healthcare, the economy, education and crime.
Political activists lobbied within the Republican party locally and nationally to influence party platforms and nominations.[30] More recently Dr. James Dobson's group Focus on the Family, based in Colorado Springs, and the Family Research Council in Washington D.C. have gained enormous respect from Republican lawmakers. While strongly advocating for these ideological matters, Dobson himself is more wary of the political spectrum and much of the resources of his group are devoted to other aims such as media.[31] However, as a private citizen, Dobson has stated his opinion on presidential elections; on February 5, 2008, Dobson issued a statement regarding the 2008 presidential election and his strong disappointment with the Republican party's candidates.[32]
In an essay written in 1996, Ralph Reed argued against the moral absolutist tone of Christian right leaders, arguing for the Republican Party Platform to stress the moral dimension of abortion rather than placing emphasis on overturning Roe v. Wade. Reed believes that pragmatism is the best way to advocate for the Christian right.
Overtly partisan actions by churches could threaten their 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status due to the Johnson Amendment of the Internal Revenue Code.[34] In one notable example, the former pastor of the East Waynesville Baptist Church in Waynesville, North Carolina "told the congregation that anyone who planned to vote for Democratic Sen. John Kerry should either leave the church or repent".[35] The church later expelled nine members who had voted for Kerry and refused to repent, which led to criticism on the national level. The pastor resigned and the ousted church members were allowed to return.[36]
The Alliance Defense Fund started the Pulpit Freedom Initiative[37] in 2008. ADF states that "[t]he goal of Pulpit Freedom Sunday is simple: have the Johnson Amendment declared unconstitutional – and once and for all remove the ability of the IRS to censor what a pastor says from the pulpit."
Christian right organizations sometimes conduct polls to determine which presidential candidates will receive the support of Christian right constituents. One such poll is taken at the Family Research Council's Values Voter Summit.[39][40] George W. Bush's electoral success owed much to his overwhelming support from white evangelical voters, who comprise 23% of the vote. In 2000 he received 68% of the white evangelical vote; in 2004 that percentage rose to 78%.

So by alienating the protestant vote, and losing votes to insure Obama wins, Ralph Reed thinks that is "progress".

Wake up and see the corruption and speak out about it. Don't worry about them calling you a bigot, because they are the true bigots.
