The process of making paper from the bark of mulberry trees is both complex and fascinating. Generations of Uyghur families in and around the Khotan area have passed down the tradition that makes use of the region’s plentiful mulberry trees as well as the dry heat.
I learned that paper-making using the bark of mulberry trees involves an 8-step process that takes a couple of days and at least 4 people to complete.
1) Gathering & Peeling: branches from mulberry trees are gathered and the bark is then peeled off, a painstaking task that is done by hand.
2) Air drying: the bark that has been peeled away is then dried in the hot, desert sun for 24 hours.
3) Boiling the Bark: once the bark has been dried, it is boiled in a large iron pan over an open fire – usually one that is fed with what is left of the mulberry branches.
4) Pounding the Mixture: the soupy mixture that is the result of boiling the bark is then pounded into submission by a wooden mallet.
5) Ferment the Mixture: after being pounded to death, this clumpy-looking bark soup is left in water to ferment. This word “ferment” is a direct translation of what I was told, but I’m not 100% sure that it means the same thing.
6) Filter Mixture into a Mold: what has now become a weird “goo” is then pressed into a mold that is basically a square wire mesh. The artisan carefully spreads the mixture out and presses it down into the mesh, removing any large clumps along the way.
7) Drying in the Sun: The wire mesh is placed outside where it will dry in the sun. During most of Khotan’s summer, this drying process doesn’t take long.
8) Peel and Prepare for Sale: Once dried, the paper is peeled from the wire mesh and prepared for sale.

From the Id Kah Mosque to the Karakoram Highway, Kashgar (喀什) is an ancient Silk Road city worth spending a good amount of time in. Located on the western edge of Xinjiang, China, it's also an excellent place to experience Uyghur culture.

Located two hours southeast of the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, the city of Turpan offers a beautiful view of the Uyghur culture, one of the reasons it's become such a popular place to visit.
The Uyghur people make up approximately 70% of the population and their history in the region goes back thousands of years.
Turpan used to be a stop along the ancient Silk Road and many of the best places to visit in the city, including the Jiaohe Ruins (交河故城) and Gaochang Ancient City (高昌故城), allow visitors to walk among historical remnants that date back as early as 100 B.C.
In addition to ancient cities, Turpan is also home to the Bezeklik Caves (柏孜克里克), once a treasure trove of Buddhist art, the Karez (坎儿井), a Uyghur irrigation system that is an engineering marvel, the Emin Minaret (苏公塔), the Flaming Mountains (火焰山), Grape Valley (葡萄沟) and much, much more.
But enough with the tourist stuff. In my opinion, what really makes Turpan awesome is the small town atmosphere that lets you experience Uyghur culture outside the confines of a big city.
The market, the street food and especially the night life are probably as memorable, if not more so, than the sites you see during the day.
Turpan is a city you won't forget and one that you won't regret visiting.

Xinjiang (XUAR) (Uyghur: شىنجاڭ, ULY: Shinjang; Mandarin pronunciation: [ɕíntɕjɑ́ŋ]; Chinese: 新疆; pinyin: Xīnjiāng; Wade–Giles: Hsin1-chiang1; Postal map spelling: Sinkiang) is an autonomous region (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) of the People's Republic of China. It is the largest Chinese administrative division and spans over 1.6 million km2. Xinjiang borders Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, has abundant oil reserves and is China's largest natural gas-producing region.
It is home to a number of different ethnic groups including the Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, Hui, Kyrgyz, and Mongol. More than a dozen autonomous prefectures and counties for minorities are located in Xinjiang. Older English-language reference works often refer to the area as Chinese Turkestan, Sinkiang, and East Turkestan. Xinjiang is divided into the Dzungarian Basin in the north and the Tarim Basin in the south by a mountain range. Only about 4.3% of Xinjiang's land area is fit for human habitation.

2007.03.20 Shoe Shine Boys in Urumchi, Xinjiang
Footage from a documentary made in Xinjiang, China in 2007. This documentary is not yet released. The main hosts of this documentary are radio personality Morley Robertson and actress Ikeda Yukiko. On a very cold day in Urumchi, shoe shine boys on a street corner joke among themselve as they go to work. The crew is being given a steady translation into Japanese of the boys' jokes. There are many capable Japanese guides in Xinjiang, and our translator was particularly excellent. The process of making paper from the bark of mulberry trees is both complex and fascinating. Generations of Uyghur families in and around the Khotan area have passed down the tradition that makes use of the region’s plentiful mulberry trees as well as the dry heat.
I learned that paper-making using the bark of mulberry trees involves an 8-step process that takes a couple of days and at least 4 people to complete.
1) Gathering & Peeling: branches from mulberry trees are gathered and the bark is then peeled off, a painstaking task that is done by hand.
2) Air drying: the bark that has been peeled away is then dried in the hot, desert sun for 24 hours.
3) Boiling the Bark: once the bark has been dried, it is boiled in a large iron pan over an open fire – usually one that is fed with what is left of the mulberry branches.
4) Pounding the Mixture: the soupy mixture that is the result of boiling the bark is then pounded into submission by a wooden mallet.
5) Ferment the Mixture: after being pounded to death, this clumpy-looking bark soup is left in water to ferment. This word “ferment” is a direct translation of what I was told, but I’m not 100% sure that it means the same thing.
6) Filter Mixture into a Mold: what has now become a weird “goo” is then pressed into a mold that is basically a square wire mesh. The artisan carefully spreads the mixture out and presses it down into the mesh, removing any large clumps along the way.
7) Drying in the Sun: The wire mesh is placed outside where it will dry in the sun. During most of Khotan’s summer, this drying process doesn’t take long.
8) Peel and Prepare for Sale: Once dried, the paper is peeled from the wire mesh and prepared for sale.

Located two hours southeast of the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, the city of Turpan offers a beautiful view of the Uyghur culture, one of the reasons it's become such a popular place to visit.
The Uyghur people make up approximately 70% of the population and their history in the region goes back thousands of years.
Turpan used to be a stop along the ancient Silk Road and many of the best places to visit in the city, including the Jiaohe Ruins (交河故城) and Gaochang Ancient City (高昌故城), allow visitors to walk among historical remnants that date back as early as 100 B.C.
In addition to ancient cities, Turpan is also home to the Bezeklik Caves (柏孜克里克), once a treasure trove of Buddhist art, the Karez (坎儿井), a Uyghur irrigation system that is an engineering marvel, the Emin Minaret (苏公塔), the Flaming Mountains (火焰山), Grape Valley (葡萄沟) and much, much more.
But enough with the tourist stuff. In my opinion, what really makes Turpan awesome is the small town atmosphere that lets you experience Uyghur culture outside the confines of a big city.
The market, the street food and especially the night life are probably as memorable, if not more so, than the sites you see during the day.
Turpan is a city you won't forget and one that you won't regret visiting.

The main hosts of this documentary are radio personality Morley Robertson and actress Ikeda Yukiko.
On a very cold day in Urumchi, shoe shine boys on a street corner joke among themselve as they go to work. The crew is being given a steady translation into Japanese of the boys' jokes. There are many capable Japanese guides in Xinjiang, and our translator was particularly excellent.
One of the boys, the boy with lightning speed skills, came from Atushu, which is a remote town in Xinjiang. There are many boys like him who travel a long distance to work.
The Xinjiang region of China is also known as East Turkestan, historically inhabited by the Uyghur people. However, it is in dispute since China's occupation shortly after the formation of the PRC. The crisis in Xinjiang is largely ignored by the international community.
We hope that the more people know about Xinjiang and the Uyghurs, the better their situation will become.

2015年8月18日に、吐魯番（トルファン）の郊外にある大河沿鎮という小さな街を散歩し、さらにその郊外、天山山脈の麓に広がる砂漠地帯を散歩、観光した時のまとめ動画です。
風景消すのもったいないからニコ生風に編集したので、尺が長いです。
なので、じっくりとその場に来たような気分で視聴して頂ければ幸いです。

その後、伊犁河大桥（伊犁河大橋、Yili river big bridge）の河畔でiPhone 5Sでタイムラプス撮影をし、ユースホステル付近の军垦路便民市场（軍墾路便民市場）を散歩しました。
本当は数日まったりして近郊の大草原等観光に行きたかったけど、
1：列車の空席状況
2：ノービザ滞在期間内に上海にたどり着けるかどうか
の2点が気がかりで、断念。それが心残りで残念でしたlol

Lost in China Jumping into an icy swimming pool in minus 14 degree Celsius temperatures in northern China? No problem. Playing polo with a headless goat? Easy. Getting kicked out of Gansu province by the Chinese government? All in a day’s work. Climbing a five-storey sword ladder? Now, that may be pushing it for Peter and Jeff Hutchens, the 20-something filmmaker/photographer duo in this new six-part series. Peter and Jeff go back to China, where they lived as children, to document the nation in the midst of social reinvention. Whether it’s a round of pick-up basketball with Tibetan herdsmen, a synthesized dance party outside traditional Kyrgyz yurts or a mobile phone-wielding camel guide in the desert, the boys uniquely capture the old China
blending in with the new.
Silk Road
Jeff and Peter Hutchens begin their China journey in Chinas westernmost province, Xingjiang. Populated by locals known as Uyghars, the brothers try to learn the ways of these rough people. They begin their journey in the city of Kashgar. Located near the only passes through the nearly impassible Pamir mountains, Kashgar was the last stop before starting out on the "the Silk Road" to western markets. In Kashgar, they barter for hats in the market, obtain a Uyghar knive, attend a cock-fight, celebrate the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, and even eat goats head! On the Silk Road, the brothers buy silks, hunt for precious white jade, ride a camel caravan through the desert, and play a version of polo with a goats head. Theyll do all of this to understand the traditional and modern way of life of the Uyghar people.
