Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.
Jaffna, in Sri Lanka, is known for its own style of spicy cuisine. This recipe for goat curry is as simple as popping all the ingredients in a pot and allowing it to simmer until the meat is tender and the gravy is thick and rich. This dish should be finished with the liver and heart of the goat if it is killed in the village, but it works just as well without the addition of the offal. Substitute with tomato paste. You can also use lamb instead of goat. Ingredients • 400 ggoat, preferably chump chops with bones • 1cinnamon stick, broken into pieces • 7cardamom pods, crushed • 2 tsproast coriander powder • 1 tsproast cumin powder • 1 tspJaffna curry powder • 1 tspdark roast curry powder • ½ tspfenugreek seeds, lightly roasted • ½ tspchilli powder • ½ tspturmeric • 2 tbsptomato paste (inste...
This is a recipe for string hoppers, which are made from a hot-water dough of rice meal or wheat flour. This is pressed out in circlets from a string mould onto little wicker mats, then steamed. Light and lacy, string hoppers make a mouth-watering meal with curry and sambol. Fresh pol sambol is great with everything and is served with nearly every meal. We used to wait until the hot bread arrived from the bakery next door and then put a big spoonful of it on the hot bread. Ingredients String hoppers • 450 gwheat flour or rice flour (see note) • salt Kiri hodi • 1onion, thinly sliced • 1small green chilli, halved lengthways • 4-6fresh curry leaves • 2 cm piecepandanus leaf • 2garlic cloves, thinly sliced • ½ tspground turmeric • ½ tspfenugreek seeds • 1 tspMaldive fish flakes (optional) • 1...
Sri Lanka, the beautiful spice island once known as Ceylon, is a rich melting pot of cuisines. It seems every nationality that has visited and traded over the years has left its mark – the Dutch, Portuguese, English, Arabs, Malays, Moors and Indians. Sri Lankan banquets are incredibly colourful, with curries that range from yellow to deep brown, the vibrant greens of the vegetables, and the bright colours of sambol. http://www.sbs.com.au/food/cuisine/sri-lankan http://www.sbs.com.au/food/article/2008/07/01/about-sri-lankan-food Copyright @ SBS Australia

Pol roti is a Sri Lankan dish which is normally served for breakfast with a chilli paste (lunu miris) or coconut sambol. This flat bread made with wheat or kurukkan flour and scraped coconut is a favourite amongst all ages in Sri Lanka. It is usually served with savoury spicy accompaniments involving lots of chilli! but can be eaten with butter and jam too. In this recipe green chillis, onions and some curry leaves are added to give the pol roti even more taste. What is Maldive Fish? Maldive fish are small dried sprat-like fish from the Maldives. They should be available in your local Maldivian, Indian or Sri Lankan shop. If maldive fish is not available you can try dried prawns or other dried fish. They have quite a strong taste and hence are optional in the above recipes. Pol Rot...

Is there anything better than fresh seafood? It's best to go to the fish market to have a good look at everything and then decide what to get. I would often use mud crabs for this recipe but if blue swimmer crabs are available they're great too. It's a bit fiddly to eat but definitely worth it! Ingredients • 2-4mud crabs or blue swimmer crabs (depending on size) • 2fish fillets (such as red throat emperor) • 2 tbspvegetable oil Ginger-chilli shallot sauce • 150 gsugar • 300 mlwater • 350 mlwhite wine • 3long red chillies, finely chopped • ¼ bunchspring onions, chopped • 10garlic cloves • 100 mlsesame oil • 300 mlsoy sauce • 300 mlsweet chilli sauce Prawns • 8prawns, shelled, deveined, washed • 1dried chilli • 3 sprigscurry leaves • 2 cm pieceginger, finely chopped • 2 tbspfish sauce • 1 tb...

For my forth country of the year, I flew over to Sri Lanka, starting in the capital, Colombo. After a day on the road, I found myself in the stunning surroundings of Dambulla, where I wasted no time in trekking the Sri Lankan jungle. We then spent some time in Sigiriya, relaxing in the Jetwing hotel and seeing elephants on safari! After another long journey up to the North of the country, we spent a week on the beaches of Trincomalee, where we saw dolphins, whales and I indulged in a spot of jetskiing. But before going home, I had to experience one of the most famous Sri Lankan delicacies, it's tea, in Kandy.
