Metinka Slater was just trying to inform the people of Des Moines, Iowa about the weather -- when suddenly a Windows 10 upgrade reminder appeared.
Over 110 million people use Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system. Unfortunately, the fine folks of Des Moines, Iowa's KCCI 8 news and weather station aren't among them -- and on Wednesday they paid for it.
Metinka Slater, the station's resident meteorologist, was giving her standard weather update when the PC that was projecting the weather map prompted her to upgrade to Windows 10, awkwardly obscuring much of the screen.
"Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10, what should I do? Don't you love when that pops up!" she joked. You can see the full video here.
The American electronics giant has been bullish on getting Windows 8 users to upgrade to Windows 10 since the operating system's July 2015 release. It's a great OS, though it likely won't be gracing KCCI 8's good books any time soon.

It was announced in November 1983 (after the Apple Lisa, but before the Macintosh) under the name "Windows", but Windows 1.0 was not released until November 1985. The shell of Windows 1.0 was a program known as the MS-DOS Executive. Other supplied programs were Calculator, Calendar, Cardfile, Clipboard viewer, Clock, Control Panel, Notepad, Paint, Reversi, Terminal, and Write. Windows 1.0 did not allow overlapping windows. Instead all windows were tiled. Only dialog boxes could appear over other windows.

Windows 10 upgrade reminder blows in on weather report
Metinka Slater was just trying to inform the people of Des Moines, Iowa about the weather -- when suddenly a Windows 10 upgrade reminder appeared. Over 110 million people use Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system. Unfortunately, the fine folks of Des Moines, Iowa's KCCI 8 news and weather station aren't among them -- and on Wednesday they paid for it. Metinka Slater, the station's resident meteorologist, was giving her standard weather update when the PC that was projecting the weather map prompted her to upgrade to Windows 10, awkwardly obscuring much of the screen. Metinka Slater was just trying to inform the people of Des Moines, Iowa about the weather -- when suddenly a Windows 10 upgrade reminder appeared.
Over 110 million people use Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system. Unfortunately, the fine folks of Des Moines, Iowa's KCCI 8 news and weather station aren't among them -- and on Wednesday they paid for it.
Metinka Slater, the station's resident meteorologist, was giving her standard weather update when the PC that was projecting the weather map prompted her to upgrade to Windows 10, awkwardly obscuring much of the screen.
"Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10, what should I do? Don't you love when that pops up!" she joked. You can see the full video here.
The American electronics giant has been bullish on getting Windows 8 users to upgrade to Windows 10 since the operating system's July 2015 release. It's a great OS, though it likely won't be gracing KCCI 8's good books any time soon.

1) "some settings are managed by your organization" is displayed because Spybot Beacon changes some group policy settings. I didn't realize this while shooting the video but it makes sense.
2) If you notice Skype Group Chats stop working open up the HOSTS file and remove all of the entries containing MSN. I've had one report of this fixing the problem.

Q) I like Cortana so I don't want to disable that feature.
A) That is fine, but just realized that Microsoft intentionally made Cortana dependent on the cloud meaning you have to give up your information, searches, contacts, calendar entries, etc to use her. You can't pick and chose what gets sent to Microsoft and still use the feature. It's all or nothing and I think this sends a bad message from Microsoft on what they are actually doing with that data. #TinfoilHat
Q) Why do you hate Microsoft so much?
A) I don't hate Microsoft, I worked there for 15 years as a Senior Software Developer. Windows is still my preferred platform that I use daily. What I don't like is the direction Microsoft is taking with regards to advertisement and marketing being the focus over the core operating system and innovation.
Q) You should just run Linux!
A) I like Linux but it's not in any position to be a replacement for an operating system like Windows. There is no Adobe support on Linux and it's not ideal for mainstream content creators and software developers. But who knows what the future holds if Microsoft keeps going down this dark street.
Q) What is telemetry?
A) It's Microsoft collecting data on your computer, what you search for, usage patterns, application usage, etc so they can analyze the data or use it for marketing.
** Full Disclosure: I worked at Microsoft for 15 years as a Software Developer and was laid off well over a year ago when Microsoft decided to get rid of the entire Windows test organization that I worked in. Nachdem viele Jahre vor den Angriffen auf die Wahlfreiheit von Windows-Nutzern gewarnt wurde, schalte Microsoft mit Windows 10 das Botnetz scharf.
Botnetze sind gemäß einer gängigen Definition Computernetze, bei
denen ein Angreifer von außen beliebigen Code ausführen kann. Und genau dies kann man aus den aktuellen Microsoft-Lizenzen unschwer herauslesen.
Noch gruseliger gestaltet sich die digitale Selbstaufgabe bei der Lektüre der Beta-Test-Bedingungen. Aber vielleicht ist die ganze Sache auch gar nicht so schlimm, sondern viel schlimmer. Auch Intel hat sich weiter unten mit ME einen verschlüsselten Zugang gesichert, für das Betriebssystem und dort laufenden Virenscanner unsichtbar. Aber das gilt ja beunruhigenderweise auch für die bereits gesichteten
Angriffsprogramme im UEFI-Bereich. In einem derartigen Sicherheitsumfeld unter dem Stichwort „Industrie 4.0“ Dienste, die für das friedliche gesellschaftliche Zusammenleben relevant sind, Angriffen aus dem Netz auszusetzen, kann nicht als akzeptable Herangehensweise charakterisiert werden.

Anyone who has Windows at the moment will almost certainly have been plagued by pop-ups asking them to update to Windows 10, and many people are getting quite annoyed with them.
