Gone Away

"Gone Away" is a song by American punk rock band The Offspring. It is the seventh track on their fourth studio album Ixnay on the Hombre (1997) and was released as the second single from the album. It also appears as the sixth track on Greatest Hits (2005). It was written by lead singer Dexter Holland.

The song became The Offspring's first No. 1 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, while reaching No. 4 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Through 2009, they played "Gone Away" with Holland performing on piano throughout Europe and the United States. Two of the tracks from this single ("D.U.I." and "Hey Joe") appear on the band's 2010 compilation album Happy Hour!.

The single reached Gold in Australia, selling 35,000 copies. It was the first single released by the Offspring to reach Gold status in any country.

Music video

The footage for the music video, shot in grainy quality, shows the band playing in a dark, and apparently abandoned slaughterhouse. Dexter Holland, for most of the video, sings to a shining lightbulb, presumably representative of the soul of the lost person. He is the only band member to interact with this bulb, though other lightbulbs are shown in each band member's respective rooms. Dexter also sings into a suspended microphone which is also used in the video; it swings back and forth as the video fades to black. It was produced by Dave Jerden.

The Offspring is an American punk rock band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1984. Formed under the name Manic Subsidal, the band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Dexter Holland, bassist Greg K., lead guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman and drummer Pete Parada. The Offspring is often credited—alongside fellow California punk bands Green Day and Rancid—for reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the 1990s. They have sold over 40 million records worldwide, being considered one of the best-selling punk rock bands of all time.

The Offspring has released nine studio albums so far. Their first three albums for the independent record labels Nemesis and Epitaph earned them a cult following. The band's third studio album, Smash (1994), became their first commercial success, and has sold over 11 million copies worldwide, setting a record for most albums sold on an independent label and becoming the first album on Epitaph to obtain gold and platinum status. Pseudopanax arboreus

Pseudopanax arboreus or Five Finger (Māori: 'Puahou' or 'Whauwhaupaku'), is a New Zealand native tree belonging to the family Araliaceae. It is one of New Zealand's more common native trees, being found widely in bush, scrub and gardens throughout both islands. The compound leaves with five to seven leaflets, hence the common name, are very characteristic of the tree and easily recognized.

Closely related and very similar to Five Finger are P. laetus, P. colensoi and P. macintyrei.

Description

Leaflets obovate-oblong to oblong-cuneate, thinly coriaceous, coarsely serrate-dentate. Flowers usually unisexual; inflorescences are compound umbels with 8-20 primary branchlets up to 10 cm long, 15-20 secondary rays, umbellules with 10-15 flowers in each. Calyx truncate or obscurely 5-toothed; flowers 5mm in diameter, sweet-scented; petals 5, white to pink flushed, ovate to triangular, acute; stamens 5; ovary 2-loculed, each containing 1(-2) ovules; style branches 2, spreading. Fruit fleshy, very dark purple, laterally compressed, 5-8 mm diam.; style branches retained on an apical disc. Seeds 2(-3) per fruit, wrinkled, 3-6 mm long.
