Henry Fielding (Sharpham, 22 April 1707 -- near Lisbon, 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones.
Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by the English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. First published on 28 February 1749, Tom Jones is among the earliest English prose works describable as a novel. The novel, totaling 346,747 words, is divided into 18 smaller books, each preceded by a discursive chapter, often on topics totally unrelated to the book itself.
This audio collection contains a treasury of 100 classic books and includes info on the life and times of the author, the theme of the book, the characters, the story outline, a concise yet detailed abridgement of the story and a discussion of the values that make each book one of the great classical works of literature.

An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews, was a novel by Henry Fielding (1707-1754) whose pen name was Captain Hercules Vinegar. He published this book under the pseudonym Conny Keyber in 1741.
The novel is a satirical burlesque written in response to Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded published by Samuel Richardson in 1740. Pamela tells the story of a 14 year old lady's maid named Pamela whose master, Mr. B., makes unwanted advances towards her. She rejects him continually.
Here is a link to Richardson's book, read, like this one, by librivox volunteers. It runs some 22 hours while Fielding's work is 90 minutes long. Richardson lived from 1689-1761. Many of his books have been read into audio format by Librivox volunteers.

His younger sister, Sarah, also became a successful writer.
Fielding married his first wife, Charlotte Craddock, in 1734. She died in 1744. In 1747 he married his wife's former maid, Mary Daniel. She was pregnant at the time of their marriage. Mary bore five children, three of whom died young.
Fielding was educated at Eton College, where he established a lifelong friendship with William Pitt the Elder. After a romantic episode with a young woman that ended in his getting into trouble with the law, he went to London where his literary career began. In 1728, he travelled to Leiden to study classics and law at the University. However, due to lack of money, he was obliged to return to London and he began writing for the theatre, some of his work being savagely critical of the contemporary government under Sir Robert Walpole.

Henry Fielding (Sharpham, 22 April 1707 -- near Lisbon, 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones.
Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. His younger sister, Sarah, also became a successful writer.
The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by the English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. First published on 28 February 1749, Tom Jones is among the earliest English prose works describable as a novel. The novel, totaling 346,747 words, is divided into 18 smaller books, each preceded by a discursive chapter, often on topics totally unrelated to the book itself.
This audio collection contains a treasury of 100 classic books and includes info on the life and times of the author, the theme of the book, the characters, the story outline, a concise yet detailed abridgement of the story and a discussion of the values that make each book one of the great classical works of literature.

An Apology for the Life of Mrs. Shamela Andrews, was a novel by Henry Fielding (1707-1754) whose pen name was Captain Hercules Vinegar. He published this book under the pseudonym Conny Keyber in 1741.
The novel is a satirical burlesque written in response to Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded published by Samuel Richardson in 1740. Pamela tells the story of a 14 year old lady's maid named Pamela whose master, Mr. B., makes unwanted advances towards her. She rejects him continually.
Here is a link to Richardson's book, read, like this one, by librivox volunteers. It runs some 22 hours while Fielding's work is 90 minutes long. Richardson lived from 1689-1761. Many of his books have been read into audio format by Librivox volunteers.
