In this fly tying tutorial, I demonstrate various techniques and methods to tie an Olive Scud Nymph. Scuds are a prolific insect found in spring creeks, thus having various colors and sizes of these in your box will pay dividends towards your fishing. Aside from showing the materials and methods for this scud, I also demonstrate how to burn monofilament eyes if you're going for that realistic look with this fly.
Featured in this fly tying tutorial are the N205BL hooks by Allen Fly Fishing. These hooks, their Caddis Pupa & Larva model, have an excellent bend to help represent the scud, plus are barbless. Scud is a series of tactical ballistic missiles developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. It was exported widely to other countries, in particular third world countries. The term comes from the NATO reporting name SS-1 Scud which was attached to the missile by Western intelligence agencies. The Russian names for the missile are the R-11 (the first version), R-17 and R-300 Elbrus (later developments). The name Scud has been widely used to refer to these missiles and the wide variety of derivative variants developed in other countries based on the Soviet design.
The first use of the term Scud was in the NATO name SS-1b Scud-A, applied to the R-11 ballistic missile. The earlier R-1 missile had carried the NATO name SS-1 Scunner, but was of a very different design, almost directly a copy of the German V-2. The R-11 used technology gained from the V-2 as well, but was a new design, smaller and differently shaped than the V-2 and R-1 weapons. The R-11 was developed by the Korolyev OKB and entered service in 1957. The most revolutionary innovation in the R-11 was the engine, designed by A.M. Isaev. Far simpler than the V-2's multi-chamber design, and employing an anti-oscillation baffle to prevent chugging, it was a forerunner to the larger engines used in Soviet launch vehicles.

This is a recording of a Scud attack on Riyadh on the evening of February 24, 1991. The videographer is unknown at this time. AT 2:02 in the video you see the first Patriot Missile explode shortly after launch. This missile was sent a destruct command from the ground due to a malfunction. A second is launched. The videographer thinks the second also missed the inbound SCUD. The journal sheet cataloging the launch says: Subject: Follow-up on SCUD launch. At approx 241825Z 1 SCUD was launched inbound for Riyadh. F/3-43 engaged and fired 2 PAT missiles. 1 PAT missile malfunctioned and was given "command Destruct" command. Second PAT missile recorded 1 mission kill. The SCUD warhead landed in Riyadh without exploding. No coordinates were given. -

When you want something dead, a gun is as close as the nearest vending machine. But when you want something dead and you're not up to the job, you want more than guns.
You want a Scud to hold them for you.
Scud is a game inspired by a comic series with the same name for the Sega Saturn. It's a combination of platforming and light gun shooting with some comedic FMV shuffled in.
It's not without it's flaws by any means, but it's one of those games that I have to pick up and play every couple of years. Some awesome tunes and a narrator akin to Morgan Freeman.

AT 2:02 in the video you see the first Patriot Missile explode shortly after launch. This missile was sent a destruct command from the ground due to a malfunction. A second is launched. The videographer thinks the second also missed the inbound SCUD.
The journal sheet cataloging the launch says:
Subject: Follow-up on SCUD launch. At approx 241825Z 1 SCUD was launched inbound for Riyadh. F/3-43 engaged and fired 2 PAT missiles. 1 PAT missile malfunctioned and was given "command Destruct" command. Second PAT missile recorded 1 mission kill. The SCUD warhead landed in Riyadh without exploding. No coordinates were given.
