The Syrian Armed Forces (SAF) launched a series of airstrikes, near the centre of Homs province, on Sunday morning, against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (formerly; ISIL/ISIS).
The airstrikes took place specifically in the vicinity of the al-Shaer gas field. During the strikes, the Islamic State fighters reportedly sustained losses, due to attacks targeted at IS vehicle convoys.

Homs (Arabic: حمص Ḥimṣ), previously known as Emesa (Greek: Ἔμεσα, Emesa), is a city in western Syria and the capital of the Homs Governorate. It is 501 metres (1,644 ft) above sea level and is located 162 kilometres (101 mi) north of Damascus. Located on the Orontes River, Homs is also the central link between the interior cities and the Mediterranean coast.
Homs is a major industrial center, and with a population of at least 652,609 people (2004 census), it is the third largest city in Syria after Aleppo to the north and the capital Damascus to the south. Its population reflects Syria's general religious diversity, composed mostly of Arabic-speaking Sunni Muslims and Alawite and Christian minorities. The city boasts a number of historic mosques and churches and is close to the Krak des Chevaliers, a world heritage site.
Homs did not emerge into the historical record until the 1st-century BCE at the time of the Seleucids. It later became the capital of a kingdom ruled by the Emesani dynasty who gave the city its name. Originally a center of worship for the sun god El-Gabal, it later gained importance in Christianity under the Byzantines. Homs was conquered by the Muslims in the 7th-century and made capital of a district that bore its current name. Throughout the Islamic era, Muslim dynasties contending for control of Syria sought after Homs due to the city's strategic position in the area. Homs began to decline under the Ottomans and only in the 19th century did the city regain its economic importance when its cotton industry boomed. During French Mandate rule, the city became a center of insurrection and, after independence in 1946, a center of Baathist resistance to the first Syrian governments. Homs has played a central role in the ongoing Syrian uprising against the Baathist government and since May 2011 has been under siege by the Syrian Army.

팔미라는 사막 한 가운데 있는 도시다. 고대 팔미라 역시 사막의 오아시스 도시로 오리엔트 세계와 지중해 세계를 잇는 무역 중계지로 번영을 누렸던 곳이다. 세 개의 아치형 문으로 이루어진 개선문은 팔미라의 입구 역할을 한다. 개선문을 지나면 도로를 따라 거대한 줄기둥인 대열주가 나타난다. 높이 9.5m에 이르는 원기둥들이 이루는 1,100미터의 대열주는 당시 팔미라가 얼마나 거대한 도시였는지를 말해준다. 도시국가로서 팔미라의 전성기는 로마의 지배를 받던 기원 전 후부터 3세기 까지, 특히 제노비아 여왕이 통치하던 시기가 그 절정이었다. 당시 이곳에는 물건을 싣고 사막을 건너는 대상의 행렬이 끊이지 않았으며 이들은 팔미라를 사막의 궁전이라고 불렀다고 한다. 도시의 기본구조는 열주 주위로 각 종 시설을 배치하는 것으로 길 양쪽으로 목욕탕, 시장, 극장, 아고라, 은행, 묘지, 신전 등을 배치했다. 로마식으로 철저히 계획된 이 도시는 16만평의 대지위에 약 3만 명의 인구가 상주했던 것으로 추정된다고 한다. 팔미라의 수호신을 모시던 벨 신전은 팔미라를 대표하는 유적의 하나다. 지금도 천정의 문양이 선명하게 남아있는 이 신전은 한 때 아랍의 성으로 이용될 정도로 견고하게 지어졌다. 팔미라는 팔미라의 클레오파트라를 자처했던 제노비아 여왕이 로마와 대적하면서 급속히 쇠퇴하였고 11세기에 지진을 겪으면서 역사에서 사라졌다. 아랍성 위에서 보는 팔미라의 모습은 팔미라의 역사를 보여주는 듯 쓸쓸하고 황량했다. 아랍성의 일몰은 아름답기로 유명하다. 그러나 오늘은 구름 때문에 제대로 된 일몰을 보지 못해 아쉬웠다.

팔미라는 사막 한 가운데 있는 도시다. 고대 팔미라 역시 사막의 오아시스 도시로 오리엔트 세계와 지중해 세계를 잇는 무역 중계지로 번영을 누렸던 곳이다. 세 개의 아치형 문으로 이루어진 개선문은 팔미라의 입구 역할을 한다. 개선문을 지나면 도로를 따라 거대한 줄기둥인 대열주가 나타난다. 높이 9.5m에 이르는 원기둥들이 이루는 1,100미터의 대열주는 당시 팔미라가 얼마나 거대한 도시였는지를 말해준다. 도시국가로서 팔미라의 전성기는 로마의 지배를 받던 기원 전 후부터 3세기 까지, 특히 제노비아 여왕이 통치하던 시기가 그 절정이었다. 당시 이곳에는 물건을 싣고 사막을 건너는 대상의 행렬이 끊이지 않았으며 이들은 팔미라를 사막의 궁전이라고 불렀다고 한다. 도시의 기본구조는 열주 주위로 각 종 시설을 배치하는 것으로 길 양쪽으로 목욕탕, 시장, 극장, 아고라, 은행, 묘지, 신전 등을 배치했다. 로마식으로 철저히 계획된 이 도시는 16만평의 대지위에 약 3만 명의 인구가 상주했던 것으로 추정된다고 한다. 팔미라의 수호신을 모시던 벨 신전은 팔미라를 대표하는 유적의 하나다. 지금도 천정의 문양이 선명하게 남아있는 이 신전은 한 때 아랍의 성으로 이용될 정도로 견고하게 지어졌다. 팔미라는 팔미라의 클레오파트라를 자처했던 제노비아 여왕이 로마와 대적하면서 급속히 쇠퇴하였고 11세기에 지진을 겪으면서 역사에서 사라졌다. 아랍성 위에서 보는 팔미라의 모습은 팔미라의 역사를 보여주는 듯 쓸쓸하고 황량했다. 아랍성의 일몰은 아름답기로 유명하다. 그러나 오늘은 구름 때문에 제대로 된 일몰을 보지 못해 아쉬웠다.

해발 750m 칼릴산 정상에 우뚝 서 있는 크락 데 슈발리에는 십자군 시대의 성이다. 성은 외성과 내성으로 이루어져 있고 외성과 내성 사이엔 해자가 있다. 기사들의 성이란 뜻의 이 성은 십자군 전쟁 당시 지어진 것으로 한 번 도 함락된 적이 없는 십자군 요새의 결정판이다. 이 성이 이슬람세력에게 함락된 것도 전투에 의해서가 아니라 거짓 정보에 의한 투항 때문이었다. 성 내부로 들어가 보면 미로 같은 통로를 따라 각각의 용도를 가진 방들이 나온다. 십자군의 말들을 키우던 마구간에는 우물터가 남아있고 말을 매어 두던 말뚝을 박았던 자리도 남아있다. 걸음을 좀 더 옮기면 이 성을 점령한 후 아랍어로 기념을 남긴 거대한 기둥이 나타나고. 성 한쪽엔 길이가 120m에 이르는 대회의실도 보인다. 성 내부에는 이렇게 다양한 공간들이 수도 없이 존재한다. “이곳 시리아의 풍광은 아주 새로운 경험이었습니다. 규모가 아주 큰 유적들과 중세의 건축기술을 보고 깊은 감명을 받았습니다. 매우 훌륭합니다. 한국 분들도 이곳의 문화를 느껴보시기 바랍니다.” 이곳은 사원이 있던 자리. 십자군이 주둔하고 있을 땐 교회였지만, 이슬람 군이 점령하고는 이슬람 사원으로 그 용도가 바뀐 곳이다. 운이 좋으면 동네 아이들의 아잔소리를 들어볼 수도 있다. “알라는 위대하시다! 알라는 위대하시다! 알라 외에 다른 신은 없다는 것을 나는 고백한다. 무함마드가 알라의 메신저라는 것을 나는 고백한다. 기도하러 나오라! 성공하기 위하여 나아오라!” 뜻밖의 행운을 뒤로하고 성의 꼭대기에 오르면 보너스로 얻는 전망 또한 볼 만하다.

After waiting for over two years, people from Homs Old City began flocking to their hometown on Friday , where their joy over coming back is mixed with sadness over the destruction caused to the city.
Locals, some of whom gathered at Oum al-Zennar Church, while others checked on their homes and shops, asserted that they will rebuild everything that was damaged and destroyed.
Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi said that the Old City is completely clear of gunmen, and that the process of repairing and clearing the streets began as soon as the last group of gunmen left, so that locals can return to their homes.
Al-Barazi also inspected the Jesuit Fathers Convent, where Father Francis van der Lugt was killed and where he was buried, Oum al-Zennar Church, and a number of shops and alleys, saying that the efforts will not focus on al-Waer area in order to resolve its status and make all of Homs clear of gunmen.

STORY: A series of videos uploaded to social media are said to show ongoing air strikes on rebel-held Houla in Syria's Homs countryside on Saturday (May 21).
The first video purports to show the aftermath of an attack on a house in Houla. People, including what is said to be civil defence personnel, can be seen carrying people from smoking buildings.
Another two videos purport to show a warplane targeting Houla and a helicopter dropping barrel bombs in the area. Smoke can be seen rising from near buildings.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, helicopters dropped bombs on an area where a hospital is located in the village of Burj Qaei, putting is out of service after midnight on Friday (May 20).
It also says mortar shells were dropped on the regime-held Maksr al Hosan in the northern countryside of Homs after midnight, injuring six members of the regime forces and the national defence forces.
