"The Lure of the Gown" is a short comedy directed by D. W. Griffith, featuring Florence Lawrence, Arthur V. Johnson and Billy Bitzer, stars of Silent Hall of Fame.
A girl gets dumped by her boyfriend for a finely dressed woman, but manages to turn her fortunes around. Florence Lawrence is the star in the film, while Arthur V. Johnson plays a smaller role as a party guest.
We trust that silent film lovers will not judge harshly the quality of the print. Many early D.W. Griffith films are only available in a paper print format, and we are all very lucky that they have survived the trials of time for us to enjoy.

Marion Leonard
Marion Leonard (June 9, 1881 – January 9, 1956) was an American stage actress who became one of first motion picture celebrities in the early years of the silent film era.
Early career
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Marion Leonard began working in live theatre until the age of twenty-seven when she was signed by American Mutoscope and Biograph Company. She made her screen debut in the short film At the Crossroads of Life (1908) directed by Wallace McCutcheon, Jr. (1884–1928) from a screenplay by D. W. Griffith, who also appeared as an actor in this film.
Within a year, she had leading roles, frequently directed by Griffith. At a time when screen credits were not given to actors, she and Florence Auer were the first star actresses to be billed by the studio as a "Biograph Girl". Of her films made at Biograph, thirty-two were with an up-and-coming young actress named Mary Pickford.
Marriage and switch to Universal Pictures
While working for Biograph, Leonard met screenwriter/director Stanner E.V. Taylor and a personal relationship developed that led to marriage. The two would eventually leave Biograph to make films together for Universal Pictures and other studios and sometimes through their own production company.

Leonard Norman Cohen, CC GOQ (born 21 September 1934) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, painter, poet, and novelist. His work has explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality, and personal relationships. Cohen has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame as well as the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2011, Cohen received a Princess of Asturias Awards for literature.
The critic Bruce Eder assessed Cohen's overall career in popular music by asserting that "[he is] one of the most fascinating and enigmatic … singer/songwriters of the late '60s … [and] has retained an audience across four decades of music-making.... Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon) [in terms of influence], he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century."

Florence Lawrence
Florence Lawrence (January 2, 1890 (one source cites 1886) – December 28, 1938) was a Canadian-American stage performer and film actress. She is often referred to as "The First Movie Star", and was the first film actor to be named publicly. At the height of her fame in the 1910s, she was known as "The Biograph Girl" for work as one of the leading ladies in Biograph Studios motion pictures. She appeared in almost 300 films for various motion picture companies throughout her career.
Early life
Born Florence Annie Bridgwood in Hamilton, Ontario, she was youngest of three children of George Bridgwood, an English-born carriage builder and Charlotte "Lotta" Bridgwood (née Dunn), a vaudeville actress. Charlotte Bridgwood had emigrated to Canada from Ireland after the Great Famine with her family as a child. She was known professionally as Lotta Lawrence and was the leading lady and director of the Lawrence Dramatic Company. At the age of three, Lawrence made her debut onstage with her mother in a song and dance routine. When she was old enough to memorize lines of dialogue, she performed with her mother and other members of the Lawrence Dramatic Company in dramatic plays. After performing tear jerking dramas like Dora Thorne and East Lynne began to depress Lawrence, her mother dropped them from the company's repertoire. While Lawrence performed on stage at the behest of her mother, she recalled that she enjoyed the work but did not like the traveling that all vaudeville performers were required to do. By the age of six, Lawrence had earned the nickname "Baby Flo, the Child Wonder".

Arthur V. Johnson
Arthur Vaughan Johnson (February 2, 1876 – January 17, 1916) was a pioneer actor and director of the early American silent film era.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Rev. Myron A. Johnson, Arthur Vaughan Johnson left college at 19 to join a traveling Shakespearean troupe. He later appeared on stage with Sol Smith Russell, Robert B. Mantell and Marie Wainwright. Johnson began as a film actor in 1905 with the Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, appearing in the one-reel drama The White Caps directed by Wallace McCutcheon, Sr., and Edwin S. Porter. In 1908, he went to work for Biograph Studios, where he acted in films directed by D.W. Griffith including Resurrection (1909) and In Old California (1910), the first movie Griffith ever shot in Hollywood. At Biograph, Arthur Johnson performed with stars such as Mary Pickford and Florence Lawrence. Johnson was reputed to be Griffith's favorite actor.
In 1911 he accepted an offer from Lubin Studios in Philadelphia that allowed him to direct as well as act. With Lottie Briscoe, his frequent co-star at Lubin, Johnson directed and starred in The Belovéd Adventurer (1914), a 15 episode serial by Emmett Campbell Hall. After performing in more than three hundred silent film shorts and directing twenty-six, health problems ended his career in 1915.

The project is entitled I AM HOME APPLIANCE - I AM WOMAN. During this project I wish to explore the domestic and electronic, producing a short portfolio of pieces and translating them into a live performance/installation. This project considers an internal contradiction between my love for certain domestic tasks on a personal level, and the potentially negative connotations of domestic life as a limiting, constricting space for women, across a timespan which has seen huge technological changes, from “manual” to “mod cons.” This is a very personal research project. Firstly, it is looking into the domestic lives of my own female relatives, for example my Grandma June. The project is entitled I AM HOME APPLIANCE - I AM WOMAN. During this project I wish to explore the domestic and electronic, producing a short portfolio of pieces and translating them into a live performance/installation. This project considers an internal contradiction between my love for certain domestic tasks on a personal level, and the potentially negative connotations of domestic life as a limiting, constricting space for women, across a timespan which has seen huge technological changes, from “manual” to “mod cons.”
This is a very personal research project. Firstly, it is looking into the domestic lives of my own female relatives, for example my Grandma June. Secondly, the process of researching and creating this project has been self-led and a steep personal learning curve. You will see sights like live sampling of the sewing machine, domestic drums, playable marigold gloves, and the domestic dress.
I have also decided to focus on repurposing machines and tasks traditionally associated with women into conventionally male associated musical contexts. “Across a range of popular music genres particular musical instruments, music technologies and sounds have become associated with masculinity and femininity.”* For example, using cooking sounds from “female” appliances (such as the microwave and cooking on the stove hob) to make “Domestic Drums,” contrasts traditional values attached to the drums, and also with sampling technology and men, with our values attached to cooking. As a woman, by creating traditionally male machines, using female associated objects, I am also trying to redefine the male context. These are complex juxtapositions where “a female creator needs to be slotted into the context of male traditions.”3 This is true considering the established/conventional frameworks. This can be challenged or questioned and also broken down by investigating alternative frameworks like DIY culture, which I will discuss further in this essay.
I could not have progressed as far in this project without the participation of my female relatives, and the support from The Joe Brown Memorial Award. I want to say a massive thank you for all the support as I would not of been able to explore as freely without this!

Scared Stiff is a 1953 American musical comedy film directed by George Marshall and starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. One of the 17 films made by the Martin and Lewis team, it was released on April 27, 1953 by Paramount Pictures. Scared Stiff was Carmen Miranda's final film. The Portuguese-Brazilian musical star died of a heart attack, two years later, in August 1955.
Plot:
Mary Carroll (Lizabeth Scott) inherits her family's ancestral home, located on a small island off Cuba, and, despite warnings and death threats, decides to sail to Havana and take possession of the reputedly haunted castle. She is joined by nightclub entertainer Larry Todd (Martin) who, believing he has killed a mobster, flees New York with a friend, Myron (Lewis). Once on the island the three enter the eerie castle and, after viewing the ghost of one of Mary's ancestors and fighting off a menacing zombie, find the key to the castle's treasure.

Free adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's powerful novel. The subject opens with the return home of Prince Dimitri, who meets the maid Katusha, a little peasant girl, and is instantly charmed with her beauty. Young, artless and innocent, as pretty as a rose, she unwittingly fascinates the prince. His noble bearing likewise impresses her, and his little attentions flatter her, until at length she is unable to resist his advances.
