The Real Polar Express is back and better than ever! She appears to have a new coat of paint. Please excuse the camera work, it isn't horrible, but not the best. Pere Marquette 1225's return to Cadillac excursion was special for many reasons. One of them was that the locomotive would traverse over rails she had never been on before. From Manton to Cadillac, the locomotive would battle an 11.65 mile long, 1.6% grade with a long passenger consist and some light assistance of a diesel helper. In this video, you can hear the locomotive giving it all she's got up the grade. Stay tuned for a full length documentary on the 1225 and the Steam Railroading Institute.

On November 28th 2015, Pere Marquette 1225 was running her second weekend of the annual North Pole Express Excursions from Owosso-Ashley to the small towns Christmas Festival. We only chased the 11:00am trip to Ashley, passing through nearly every little town along the way it was a pretty easy chase.
Pere Marquette 1225 is a 2-8-4 (Berkshire) steam locomotive built for Pere Marquette Railway (PM) by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio. 1225 is one of two surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 locomotives, the other being 1223 which is on display at the Tri-Cities Historical Society near ex-GTW coaling tower, in Grand Haven, MI. Nickel Plate 765 (operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, Inc) is also a Lima built Berkshire very similar in appearance and specifications to the Pere Marquette engines.
The Pere Marquette Railroad used 1225 in regular service from the locomotive's construction in 1941 until the railroad merged into Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O;) in 1947; it remained in use on C&O;'s Michigan lines until 1951. Slated for scrapping, 1225 was acquired by Michigan State University in 1957 and placed on static display.
In 1971, work began to restore 1225 to operation, an effort that culminated in its first excursion run in 1988. The locomotive, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is now used on excursion trains over the former Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railway, now Great Lakes Central Railroad.

The Real Polar Express is back in town, and on its first daylight run of the season the setting could not have been any more perfect. The snow is flying, and the old Berkshire is back on the mainline for another year of excursions. The 1225 is seen in this chase pulling the Steam Railroading Institutes North Pole Express train from Owosso Michigan to Ashley Michigan. On our chase we got 7 total shots of the 2-8-4 Berkshire Locomotive roaring north in the snow fall with its consist in tow. Included were a number of cabooses, classic streamlined coaches, and even some modern commuter coaches for economy passengers. On the rear of the train GLC 397 is positioned to pull the train back south as the head end since there are no turning facilities in Ashley Michigan. It was a great chase and I was glad no one was hurt in the poor weather conditions. The 1225 looked right at home in the snow, and I look forward to seeing this Berkshire again!

Take a ride back in time to the Christmas of your childhood onboard Pere Marquette 1225 in Midwest Rail Excursions Special Holiday Production. Our latest video features the Steam Railroading Institute's Steam Locomotive, Pere Marquette 1225 and higlights its North Pole Express Excursions that take place between November and December of each year. The 1225 was used for the audio as well as a visual reference for the locomotive in the Warner Brothers movie The Polar Express. Since the movies release the Steam Railroading Institute has been operating the 1225 on their famous North Pole Express trips. During these trips the 1225 hauls hundreds of families to the Village of Ashley's Country Christmas where children are able to participate in many holiday activities and of course meet Santa. We would like to thank all of the passengers who have rode on the North Pole Express Trips over the past few years and also express our gratitude and appreciation to the Voulnteers of the Steam Railroading Institute, without their dedication and hard work these trips would not be possible.

The Whistle Shop of Waterford, Michigan hired us to film a commercial for them, promoting their custom made, replica whistles. In this promo, Jason Aurand, owner of the Whistle Shop, tests a exact replica of Norfolk & Western 611's whistle on the 1225. For every replica sold of 611's whistle, Jason is donating a percentage of the revenue to the Fire Up 611 group to help raise funds for the locomotive's restoration. Pere Marquette 1225, an N-1 2-8-4 class Berkshire, operates mainline excursions between Owosso and Alma, Michigan as part of Train Expo 2014 in June. The 1225 was built in October 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio for the Pere Marquette Railway. It was utilized mostly in freight by the PM, and later the C&O;, until 1958. It was donated to the Michigan State University for display shortly after. In the 70s, a group of college students began a mechanical restoration on the engine. This group, which would form what today is known as the Steam Railroading Institute, successfully restored the 1225 in 1988. Since then, the locomotive has operated many excursions throughout the state of Michigan. The Berkshire is most well known for providing the real life sounds and appearance for the titular locomotive of the 2005 film "The Polar Express." During the weekend of June 20th-22nd, 2014, the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, Michigan hosted "Train Expo 2014". One of the many activities people could partake in were the Half-Day trips to Alma, Michigan and return. These excursions were pulled by one of the two big "Berkshire"-type steam locomotives - Nickel Plate Road 765, from Indiana's Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society - and Owosso's own Pere Marquette #1225. In this video, we'll follow the 1225 as it takes charge of the Half-Day excursion to Alma and return. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the "Polar Express" engine in action! *Also, my apologies if the pacing shot on the return trip is too wobbly. I did try to stabilize it in Final Cut Pro, but the camera sensors didn't take well to the car driving on Michigan's dirt/gravel roads.*

The Real Polar Express is back in town, and on its first daylight run of the season the setting could not have been any more perfect. The snow is flying, and the old Berkshire is back on the mainline for another year of excursions. The 1225 is seen in this chase pulling the Steam Railroading Institutes North Pole Express train from Owosso Michigan to Ashley Michigan. On our chase we got 7 total shots of the 2-8-4 Berkshire Locomotive roaring north in the snow fall with its consist in tow. Included were a number of cabooses, classic streamlined coaches, and even some modern commuter coaches for economy passengers. Pere Marquette 1225 - Thunder on the Mainline
Pere Marquette 1225, an N-1 2-8-4 class Berkshire, operates mainline excursions between Owosso and Alma, Michigan as part of Train Expo 2014 in June. The 1225 was built in October 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio for the Pere Marquette Railway. It was utilized mostly in freight by the PM, and later the C&O;, until 1958. It was donated to the Michigan State University for display shortly after. In the 70s, a group of college students began a mechanical restoration on the engine. This group, which would form what today is known as the Steam Railroading Institute, successfully restored the 1225 in 1988. During the weekend of June 20th-22nd, 2014, the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, Michigan hosted "Train Expo 2014". One of the many activities people could partake in were the Half-Day trips to Alma, Michigan and return. These excursions were pulled by one of the two big "Berkshire"-type steam locomotives - Nickel Plate Road 765, from Indiana's Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society - and Owosso's own Pere Marquette #1225. In this video, we'll follow the 1225 as it takes charge of the Half-Day excursion to Alma and return. WIth the return of Pere Marquette #1225 to steam in 2014, we chase the locomotive from Owosso, MI to Alma, MI and back again. Pere Marquette #1225 is a 2-8-4 'Berkshire' type steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941, operating for the Pere Marquette Railway and later the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. She retired in 1957 and was originally sold for scrap, that is until she was donated to Michigan State University. In 1971, a group of train enthusiasts made plans to restore 1225 to operating condition. She was fired up in 1975, 18 years since her last fire up. Pere Marquette 1225's return to Cadillac excursion was special for many reasons. One of them was that the locomotive would traverse over rails she had never been on before. From Manton to Cadillac, the locomotive would battle an 11.65 mile long, 1.6% grade with a long passenger consist and some light assistance of a diesel helper. In this video, you can hear the locomotive giving it all she's got up the grade. Stay tuned for a full length documentary on the 1225 and the Steam Railroading Institute.

In this promo, Jason Aurand, owner of the Whistle Shop, tests a exact replica of Norfolk & Western 611's whistle on the 1225. For every replica sold of 611's whistle, Jason is donating a percentage of the revenue to the Fire Up 611 group to help raise funds for the locomotive's restoration. Pere Marquette 1225, an N-1 2-8-4 class Berkshire, operates mainline excursions between Owosso and Alma, Michigan as part of Train Expo 2014 in June.
The 1225 was built in October 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio for the Pere Marquette Railway. It was utilized mostly in freight by the PM, and later the C&O;, until 1958. It was donated to the Michigan State University for display shortly after. In the 70s, a group of college students began a mechanical restoration on the engine. This group, which would form what today is known as the Steam Railroading Institute, successfully restored the 1225 in 1988. Since then, the locomotive has operated many excursions throughout the state of Michigan. The Berkshire is most well known for providing the real life sounds and appearance for the titular locomotive of the 2005 film "The Polar Express."

During the weekend of June 20th-22nd, 2014, the Steam Railroading Institute of Owosso, Michigan hosted "Train Expo 2014".
One of the many activities people could partake in were the Half-Day trips to Alma, Michigan and return. These excursions were pulled by one of the two big "Berkshire"-type steam locomotives - Nickel Plate Road 765, from Indiana's Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society - and Owosso's own Pere Marquette #1225.
In this video, we'll follow the 1225 as it takes charge of the Half-Day excursion to Alma and return. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the "Polar Express" engine in action!
*Also, my apologies if the pacing shot on the return trip is too wobbly. I did try to stabilize it in Final Cut Pro, but the camera sensors didn't take well to the car driving on Michigan's dirt/gravel roads.*

Night Watch: Pere Marquette 1225 during NPE 2015 part 2
We first see a couple scenes of 1225 pulling the train down to clear the switch. One during fog, the other on a clear night. We watch as the train backs with a dead GLC 397 on the end into the clear so the 1225 can cut off. Then we see the 1225 leaving the shop after servicing for a ride on the turntable. Once turned, she sits until water is needed and then is seen easing down to the hydrant. At this point, Nick takes the time to explain cleaning excess grease and oil off the rods and grease certs and why it is important in the long run, despite what others may say! -

Did you know the Pere Marquette 1225 is the REAL Polar Express from Owosso, Michigan? Did you realize the number 1225 is the same as the date of Christmas, 12/25?
1225's blueprints were the prototype for the locomotive image, and its sounds were used in the 2004 film The Polar Express. The film was based on the Caldecott Medal winning book of the same name. The children's book was written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and as a child attended every home football game at Michigan State, next to which this engine was on static display. He recalls playing on this engine many times as a child saying, "I remember that train on campus,...I can't believe it's the same train! I climbed on that train. I actually stood on it."[3] Appropriately enough, the locomotive's road number is the date of Christmas, 12/25.

We first see a couple scenes of 1225 pulling the train down to clear the switch. One during fog, the other on a clear night. We watch as the train backs with a dead GLC 397 on the end into the clear so the 1225 can cut off. Then we see the 1225 leaving the shop after servicing for a ride on the turntable. Once turned, she sits until water is needed and then is seen easing down to the hydrant. At this point, Nick takes the time to explain cleaning excess grease and oil off the rods and grease certs and why it is important in the long run, despite what others may say!

Nothing quite symbolizes the allure of the rails like big steam on the open main. In June 2014, Owosso's Steam Railroading Institute brought together two Lima Locomotive "Berkshire" Locomotives, among others, for a weekend of steam railroading. SRI's Pere Marquette 1225, and visiting FWRHS Nickel Plate 765 headlined the show, carrying on the legacy of William Woodard's "Super Power" steam concept. Build in 1941 and 1944 respectively, the "Berks" pulled tonnage at speed like few predecessors could. With a massive firebox and boiler, coupled with feedwater heaters, enlarged superheaters, and a trailing truck booster engine, the 1225 and 765 spent their careers at the heart of their respective fleets. March 15th 2014 was just a plain old bitter cold day, but it was also the day we would bring our cameras to see this beautiful locomotive in Owosso, MI. Train Expo 2014 brought the two Berks together for the first time in several years, following the 1225's 15-year overhaul. Each locomotive hauled 5-hour excursions over three days from Owosso to Alma, Michigan along the famed Ann Arbor Railroad mainline, now controlled by the Great Lakes Central.
TRRS chased on the first day of excursions, Friday June 20, 2014. The day was marred by rain, but the majesty of steam can penetrate even the worst downpour. Follow along with the morning 765 excursion and then the afternoon 1225 excursion with the 2-8-4 "Berkshire" cousins from the Nickel Plate and Pere Marquette.
The chase of 1225 was terminated in Alma due to the heavy rain which would only continue. While I am not afraid to film in the rain (obviously!), it does not mean I like to do it over and over!
