Charlie pretends to be a dentist though he is only his assistant. When a patient can't stop laughing from the anesthesia Charlie knocks him out with a club. He is sent to the drug store, gets in a fight with a man who (after a brick in the face) becomes another patient, and pulls the skirt off the dentist's wife (who is out walking). At one point Charlie pulls a tooth (the wrong one) using enormous pliers. Classic Comedy TV Show, Silent film Classic Movie from before the Roaring 20's. watch tv shows for free. Pleasures of the living flesh verses the rantings of fanatical religious preachings are aptly displayed in this screen adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's story Miss Sadie Thompson. Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford) is a sassy prostitute who lands in Pago Pago in the South Pacific after an epidemic grounds the ship on which she's booked passage. Sadie's good looks, free spirit, and quick wit soon attract the attention of a group of American soldiers stationed on the island; while most are motivated by simple lust, the naive Sgt. O'Hara (William Gargan) falls in love with Sadie, thoroughly unaware of her checkered past and real profession. Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston father of actor director John Huston), a fire-and-brimstone pompous preacher bent on bringing salvation to the soldiers, is quickly onto Sadie's occupation and ways, and is determined to convince her to change her ways. Sadie slowly but surely is softened by Davidson's conviction, but the preacher soon finds himself all too human and is turned on himself by her sensual presence; O'Hara also learns the truth about Sadie, but hatches his own plan to "reform" her -- marriage. While not a box office hit in 1932, Rain has gone on to become a favorite in years since on video, thanks to Joan Crawford's vivid performance as Sadie and director Lewis Milestone's adventurous visual style. - Cathy Falstaff, Guest Reviewer for the NZ Herald.

• Filmed on Catalina Island off the coast of California.
• This was Joan's first film made on loan-out to a studio other than MGM.
• Other famous "Sadie Thompson"s: Jeanne Eagels (1922, stage); Gloria Swanson (1928 silent film); 1935 (Tallulah Bankhead, stage); Rita Hayworth (1953 film). Carroll Baker appeared in a 1970 TV version.
• Screenwriter Maxwell Anderson also wrote a radio play that Joan appeared in later in the 1930s: "Mary of Scotland" for the Lux Radio Theater.
• Joan's fellow cast members were cool to her during filming. Walter Catlett went so far as to tell her, "Listen, fishcake, when Jeanne Eagels died, Rain died with her." (JCB)
• While filming on Catalina Island, Joan usually stayed in her cottage evenings, playing Bing Crosby records over and over, to the annoyance of her fellow cast and crew. (JCB)
• Joan's marriage to first husband Doug Fairbanks, Jr., was on the rocks during filming. She often refused to take his calls and was short with him when he sailed out for a visit, claiming he was ruining her concentration. She went into seclusion after the film wrapped in the summer of '32, and a belated honeymoon trip to Europe proved fruitless. The couple were officially divorced 7 months after Rain's release.
• Joan discovered she was pregnant during filming and told Fairbanks that she had slipped on the deck of a ship while shooting, losing the baby.
Rain (1932) is a film that all reliable and government sources prove the U.S.A. made and produced film is in the public domain as its copyright lapsed and was not renewed more than 50 years ago. This public domain movie is a classic example of film noir and one of my favorite movies. In it, a guy is poisoned by radiation poisoning put in his drink, and he knows he is going to die, but in with his remaining time he dedicates himself to discovering who killed him, and why.
It wasn't on YouTube yet so I thought I'd put it up. Orchard-L, author of Boundless Ocean, Missing, and who is helping me make Saturated Dreamers, recommended the movie to me.

Apaches is the title of a full-length Public Information Film (PIF) made in the UK in 1977. It was produced by the Central Office Of Information (COI) for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and shown extensively in the Southern, Anglia and Westward areas, before being shown either on film or videocassette in primary schools. The 26-minute long film deals with the subject of the dangers to children on farms, and has been broadcast in schools all over the country. The time frame of the film is somewhat confusing, giving a surreal feeling to the events portrayed. Apaches is now one of the most notorious public information films of all time.
It was written by Neville Smith and directed by John Mackenzie.

Public Domain is a 2003 Canadian film about reality TV. It was directed by Kris Lefcoe and stars Nicole de Boer, Mike Beaver, Lindy Booth and Dov Tiefenbach. The film is openly critical of reality TV and portrays the hosts and producers as cruel and heartless people. While it was considered a 'feature' film, it has toured film festivals more than it has been screened in cinemas.
Public Domain is a reality TV game show in which the producers infiltrate the contestants' homes without their knowledge and place them under surveillance for the world to see. In a Big Brother-style twist, viewers vote for who they think is the funniest and most dysfunctional contestant, and the top three based on these votes are chosen as the finalists.
Public Domain received mostly positive reviews, although many critics did not choose to review the movie. For example, the movie scored 57% at Rotten Tomatoes but only received seven reviews. Dennis Harvey from Variety did not give the movie a score, however the text of the review was borderline positive.

Pleasures of the living flesh verses the rantings of fanatical religious preachings are aptly displayed in this screen adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's story Miss Sadie Thompson. Sadie's good looks, free spirit, and quick wit soon attract the attention of a group of American soldiers stationed on the island; while most are motivated by simple lust, the naive Sgt. O'Hara (William Gargan) falls in love with Sadie, thoroughly unaware of her checkered past and real profession. Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston father of actor director John Huston), a fire-and-brimstone pompous preacher bent on bringing salvation to the soldiers, is quickly onto Sadie's occupation and ways, and is determined to convince her to change her ways. Sadie slowly but surely is softened by Davidson's conviction, but the preacher soon finds himself all too human and is turned on himself by her sensual presence; O'Hara also learns the truth about Sadie, but hatches his own plan to "reform" her -- marriage. • Filmed on Catalina Island off the coast of California.
• This was Joan's first film made on loan-out to a studio other than MGM.
• Other famous "Sadie Thompson"s: Jeanne Eagels (1922, stage); Gloria Swanson (1928 silent film); 1935 (Tallulah Bankhead, stage); Rita Hayworth (1953 film). Carroll Baker appeared in a 1970 TV version.
• Screenwriter Maxwell Anderson also wrote a radio play that Joan appeared in later in the 1930s: "Mary of Scotland" for the Lux Radio Theater.
• Joan's fellow cast members were cool to her during filming. Walter Catlett went so far as to tell her, "Listen, fishcake, when Jeanne Eagels died, Rain died with her." (JCB)
• While filming on Catalina Island, Joan usually stayed in her cottage evenings, playing Bing Crosby records over and over, to the annoyance of her fellow cast and crew. (JCB)
• Joan's marriage to first husband Doug Fairbanks, Jr., was on the rocks during filming. She often refused to take his calls and was short with him when he sailed out for a visit, claiming he was ruining her concentration. She went into seclusion after the film wrapped in the summer of '32, and a belated honeymoon trip to Europe proved fruitless. The couple were officially divorced 7 months after Rain's release.
• Joan discovered she was pregnant during filming and told Fairbanks that she had slipped on the deck of a ship while shooting, losing the baby.

Pleasures of the living flesh verses the rantings of fanatical religious preachings are aptly displayed in this screen adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's story Miss Sadie Thompson. Sadie Thompson (Joan Crawford) is a sassy prostitute who lands in Pago Pago in the South Pacific after an epidemic grounds the ship on which she's booked passage. Sadie's good looks, free spirit, and quick wit soon attract the attention of a group of American soldiers stationed on the island; while most are motivated by simple lust, the naive Sgt. O'Hara (William Gargan) falls in love with Sadie, thoroughly unaware of her checkered past and real profession. Rev. Alfred Davidson (Walter Huston father of actor director John Huston), a fire-and-brimstone pompous preacher bent on bringing salvation to the soldiers, is quickly onto Sadie's occupation and ways, and is determined to convince her to change her ways. Sadie slowly but surely is softened by Davidson's conviction, but the preacher soon finds himself all too human and is turned on himself by her sensual presence; O'Hara also learns the truth about Sadie, but hatches his own plan to "reform" her -- marriage. Notes:
• Filmed on Catalina Island off the coast of California.
• This was Joan's first film made on loan-out to a studio other than MGM.
• Other famous "Sadie Thompson"s: Jeanne Eagels (1922, stage); Gloria Swanson (1928 silent film); 1935 (Tallulah Bankhead, stage); Rita Hayworth (1953 film). Carroll Baker appeared in a 1970 TV version.
• Screenwriter Maxwell Anderson also wrote a radio play that Joan appeared in later in the 1930s: "Mary of Scotland" for the Lux Radio Theater.
• Joan's fellow cast members were cool to her during filming. Walter Catlett went so far as to tell her, "Listen, fishcake, when Jeanne Eagels died, Rain died with her." (JCB)
• While filming on Catalina Island, Joan usually stayed in her cottage evenings, playing Bing Crosby records over and over, to the annoyance of her fellow cast and crew. (JCB)
• Joan's marriage to first husband Doug Fairbanks, Jr., was on the rocks during filming. She often refused to take his calls and was short with him when he sailed out for a visit, claiming he was ruining her concentration. She went into seclusion after the film wrapped in the summer of '32, and a belated honeymoon trip to Europe proved fruitless. The couple were officially divorced 7 months after Rain's release.
• Joan discovered she was pregnant during filming and told Fairbanks that she had slipped on the deck of a ship while shooting, losing the baby.

ENGINEERED FOR THE STREETS | SINCE 1984 | NEVER COMPLY In June of 1988, Stacy Peralta and Craig Stecyk arrived at Wildberry Court in Edison, NJ to film me for Bones Brigade Video Four: Public Domain. They carried with them the very first samples of my first ever Pro-Model skateboard, which I would be seeing, holding in my hands and riding for the first time. For the next 2.5 days we would film in New Jersey, New York and Washington DC. This footage is basically a long-form version of my part in Public Domain, gently edited down by Mark Nisbet. Not all of the footage is here, there’s a few missing clips / spots but for the most part this is the raw footage that made up Public Domain. Enjoy! — Mike Vallely -

Charlie Chan in Reno, 1938
The character of Charlie Chan was created by author Earl Derr Biggers, who wrote several mystery novels featuring the character. Biggers based Charlie Chan in part on a Honolulu police officer named Chang Apana. Both the character of Charlie Chan and the real-life Chang Apana worked in Honululu and were accomplished, respected police officers of Chinese descent, but the similarities seem to end there. The first screen appearances of Charlie Chan were in silent serials and the character also had a small role in the 1929 early talkie "Behind That Curtain." In 1931, Fox studios cast Warner Oland as Charlie Chan, who had previous experience playing Asian roles. ENGINEERED FOR THE STREETS | SINCE 1984 | NEVER COMPLY
In June of 1988, Stacy Peralta and Craig Stecyk arrived at Wildberry Court in Edison, NJ to film me for Bones Brigade Video Four: Public Domain. They carried with them the very first samples of my first ever Pro-Model skateboard, which I would be seeing, holding in my hands and riding for the first time. For the next 2.5 days we would film in New Jersey, New York and Washington DC. This footage is basically a long-form version of my part in Public Domain, gently edited down by Mark Nisbet. Not all of the footage is here, there’s a few missing clips / spots but for the most part this is the raw footage that made up Public Domain. Enjoy!

The character of Charlie Chan was created by author Earl Derr Biggers, who wrote several mystery novels featuring the character. Biggers based Charlie Chan in part on a Honolulu police officer named Chang Apana. Both the character of Charlie Chan and the real-life Chang Apana worked in Honululu and were accomplished, respected police officers of Chinese descent, but the similarities seem to end there. The first screen appearances of Charlie Chan were in silent serials and the character also had a small role in the 1929 early talkie "Behind That Curtain."
In 1931, Fox studios cast Warner Oland as Charlie Chan, who had previous experience playing Asian roles. For the most part, Warner Oland played Chan as a soft-spoken, polite detective, an aspect that was noticeably different from Earl Derr Biggers' original, more assertive Charlie Chan. However, Chan's wise proverbs and powers of deduction remained much the same in the films as they were in the novels. Warner Oland had a very successful run as Charlie Chan from 1931-37, and starred in perhaps the most acclaimed Chan film, "Charlie Chan at the Opera," co-starring Boris Karloff. The character of Chan was unique; he had no trouble coming up with wise proverbs or sayings for any situation. An example of one of his sayings- "Politeness is the golden key that opens many doors." He was often underestimated, even by members of the police force, and always came out ahead, no matter what people thought of him. This was a step forward for people of Chinese descent, because there had previously never been a Chinese character in movies that was not a villain or a negative stereotype. Warner Oland visited Shanghai, and was thought by many to really be Chinese, a testament to his believability in the role of Charlie Chan. One of the elements that made the series so popular was the addition of Charlie Chan's enthusiastic Americanized sons, played mainly by Asian actors Keye Luke, Sen Yung, and Benson Fong. Their amateur detective work and comedic chemistry with their onscreen "dad" was a key addition to the films' success.
