Tre giorni trascorsi nella magica Trieste. Con questo video ho voluto raccontare le emozioni che mi ha trasmesso.

Il 26 ottobre 1954, con l'arrivo dell'esercito italiano in città, Trieste tornava all'Italia dopo quasi nove anni di amministrazione angloamericana. «Passepartout» festeggia questo evento.
Partendo da un libro di Hobsbawm («Il trionfo della borghesia, 1848-1875»), in 30' di programma, Daverio accenna all'ascesa della città a partire dal declino di Venezia e dalla storia di un personaggio che ha dato lustro a Trieste: Pasquale Revoltella. Industriale, finanziere, direttore delle Generali, riesce grazie al suo capitale a diventare barone.
La sua ricca casa diventa, dopo la sua morte, un museo, che tuttora permette di ammirare la crescente voglia d'Italia che pervade la Trieste di fine Ottocento.
Amico di Revoltella era Massimiliano d'Asburgo; e così ci trasferiamo nelle sale del Castello di Miramare, tra gusti azzardati e ricordi.
Ritroviamo poi Daverio a tu per tu con le nostalgie rilkiane del bellissimo Castello di Duino e per le strade di Trieste a rintracciarne il passaggio da città asburgica a città attraversata dall'architettura fascista.
La chiusura è dedicata all'attuale rinascita della città aperta verso l'Est. Come dice Daverio: «Oggi Trieste si rimette in moto. In bocca al lupo».

In 1960, Lieutenant Don Walsh of the US Navy and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard navigated the Trieste bathyscaphe into the Mariana Trench. They accomplished a feat so incredible that it forever raised the bar for deep-ocean exploration.

Que de statues, de stèles, de colonnes et d'épigrammes à Trieste ! Que de repères, que de dates ! Trieste douterait-elle de son identité ? Agrippée à l'extrémité septentrionale de l'Adriatique, entre Italie et Slovénie, entre les Alpes dinariques et la mer Adriatique, Trieste n'est pas facile à « situer », ni géographiquement, ni historiquement... Pour conjurer ce trouble, la plus belle place de la ville, qui s'ouvre face à la Slovénie, se nomme Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia...

Trieste (/triːˈɛst/;Italian pronunciation: [triˈɛste] 
listen (help·info); Slovene: Trst, German: Triest) is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic cultures. In 2009, it had a population of about 205,000 and it is the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province.
Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1382 until 1918. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). In the fin-de-siecle period, it emerged as an important hub for literature and music. However, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Trieste's union to Italy after World War I led to some decline of its "Mittel-European" cultural and commercial importance. Enjoying an economic revival during the 1930s and throughout the Cold War, Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs. Today, the city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services.

Chris Cornell (born Christopher John Boyle; July 20, 1964) is an American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Soundgarden and as the former lead vocalist for Audioslave. He is also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991. He is known for his wide vocal range, spanning B1-G5 in full-voice, and up to E6 in falsetto, as well as his powerful vocal belting technique. He was the founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his former roommate, Andrew Wood. He has released three solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), and Scream (2009). Cornell was ranked 4th in the list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" by Hit Parader. He performed the theme song to the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), "You Know My Name." Chris Cornell also released his first live solo album entitled "Songbook" in November, 2011.
Cornell was born and raised in Seattle, Washington and attended Christ the King, Catholic elementary school and Shorewood High School. His parents are Ed Boyle (a pharmacist from an Irish Catholic background) and Karen Cornell (an accountant from a Jewish background). He has five siblings: older brothers Peter and Patrick, and younger sisters Katy, Suzy, and Maggie. Peter, Katy and Suzy all performed in the band Inflatable Soule in the 1990s. Peter is currently the frontman for the New York-based rock band Black Market Radio. Katy performs as lead vocalist for the Seattle band Happy Hour Hero.

Armed with his 1913 railway guide, Michael Portillo travels the Habsburg imperial line from Vienna across the awe-inspiring Semmering Pass, a handmade railway line blasted through the Alps. His journey takes him through a patchwork of nations which a century ago formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His destination is the Adriatic port of Trieste. In Vienna, he encounters a pre-Cold War spy and hears for himself the concert that caused a riot in 1913. At the winter sports resort of Semmering, rails of a slippier kind prove hard to navigate when Michael takes to a toboggan. In Austria's second city, Graz, Michael ventures underground at the Lurgrotte Caves to find out about a famous turn-of-the-century rescue operation. Over the border in the former imperial territory of Slovenia, Michael discovers how an earthquake in Ljubljana encouraged its citizens to assert their national identity in architecture and art. In high spirits, with the help of the local liquor, Michael says "na zdravje" to Slovenia and heads south. Arriving in Italy at the empire's southern port of Trieste, Michael savours the imported coffee which fuelled the café culture of its elegant capital, Vienna. -

From Serbia via Croatia to the EU. But is it too late? ;) This time it's Italy and the beautiful city of Trieste. I've been there several times, both in the 80s and recently, and I've enjoyed it each and every time. A really nice city. Not bike friendly, unfortunately, but nevertheless a place where I always feel at home (perhaps I live in a bike unfriendly city? ;)). Since I'm not terribly familiar with Trieste and it was a Sunday, this is simply an easy ride through the centre and a few more spots. A nice experience ruined, to some extent, by Slovenian customs officer but more on that in the movie. ;) In this - part 1 - you'll see XX Settembre, Ponterosso, Piazza Unita, Teatro Romano, Caffe Tommaseo and Zampoli :), the train station and the coastline. Tre giorni trascorsi nella magica Trieste. Con questo video ho voluto raccontare le emozioni che mi ha trasmesso. Le riprese video sono state realizzate con una Panasonic HC - X929, gli scatti con una Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. Passepartout - Philippe Daverio - Trieste (in onda il 24/10/2004)
Il 26 ottobre 1954, con l'arrivo dell'esercito italiano in città, Trieste tornava all'Italia dopo quasi nove anni di amministrazione angloamericana. «Passepartout» festeggia questo evento. Partendo da un libro di Hobsbawm («Il trionfo della borghesia, 1848-1875»), in 30' di programma, Daverio accenna all'ascesa della città a partire dal declino di Venezia e dalla storia di un personaggio che ha dato lustro a Trieste: Pasquale Revoltella. Industriale, finanziere, direttore delle Generali, riesce grazie al suo capitale a diventare barone. La sua ricca casa diventa, dopo la sua morte, un museo, che tuttora permette di ammirare la crescente voglia d'Italia che pervade la Trieste di fine Ottocento. From Serbia via Croatia to the EU. But is it too late? ;) This time it's Italy and the beautiful city of Trieste. I've been there several times, both in the 80s and recently, and I've enjoyed it each and every time. A really nice city. Not bike friendly, unfortunately, but nevertheless a place where I always feel at home (perhaps I live in a bike unfriendly city? ;)). Since I'm not terribly familiar with Trieste and it was a Sunday, this is simply an easy ride through the centre and a few more spots. A nice experience ruined, to some extent, by Slovenian customs officer but more on that in the movie. ;) In this - part 1 - you'll see XX Settembre, Ponterosso, Piazza Unita, Teatro Romano, Caffe Tommaseo and Zampoli :), the train station and the coastline. Il 26 ottobre 1954, con l'arrivo dell'esercito italiano in città, Trieste tornava all'Italia dopo quasi nove anni di amministrazione angloamericana. «Passepartout» festeggia questo evento.
Partendo da un libro di Hobsbawm («Il trionfo della borghesia, 1848-1875»), in 30' di programma, Daverio accenna all'ascesa della città a partire dal declino di Venezia e dalla storia di un personaggio che ha dato lustro a Trieste: Pasquale Revoltella. Industriale, finanziere, direttore delle Generali, riesce grazie al suo capitale a diventare barone.
La sua ricca casa diventa, dopo la sua morte, un museo, che tuttora permette di ammirare la crescente voglia d'Italia che pervade la Trieste di fine Ottocento.

Armed with his 1913 railway guide, Michael Portillo travels the Habsburg imperial line from Vienna across the awe-inspiring Semmering Pass, a handmade railway line blasted through the Alps.
His journey takes him through a patchwork of nations which a century ago formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His destination is the Adriatic port of Trieste.
In Vienna, he encounters a pre-Cold War spy and hears for himself the concert that caused a riot in 1913. At the winter sports resort of Semmering, rails of a slippier kind prove hard to navigate when Michael takes to a toboggan.
In Austria's second city, Graz, Michael ventures underground at the Lurgrotte Caves to find out about a famous turn-of-the-century rescue operation.
Over the border in the former imperial territory of Slovenia, Michael discovers how an earthquake in Ljubljana encouraged its citizens to assert their national identity in architecture and art. From Serbia via Croatia to the EU. But is it too late? ;)
This time it's Italy and the beautiful city of Trieste. I've been there several times, both in the 80s and recently, and I've enjoyed it each and every time. A really nice city. Not bike friendly, unfortunately, but nevertheless a place where I always feel at home (perhaps I live in a bike unfriendly city? ;)).
Since I'm not terribly familiar with Trieste and it was a Sunday, this is simply an easy ride through the centre and a few more spots. A nice experience ruined, to some extent, by Slovenian customs officer but more on that in the movie. ;) In this - part 1 - you'll see XX Settembre, Ponterosso, Piazza Unita, Teatro Romano, Caffe Tommaseo and Zampoli :), the train station and the coastline. All the way to Torri d'Europa.

Driving from Birmingham UK to Trieste Italy road trip
April 13th 2011, Birmingham UK. My father and I start our long road trip down to Trieste, Italy. We will cross 7 countries: England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria and finally Italy. We split the trip into two days, the first driving on the more direct routes with a stop for the overnight in Germany, just south of Frankfurt, the second part we decided to take a new and more scenic route crossing the Alps into Italy. The video is accelerated and I apologise for the low quality.. but hope you enjoy it and that it may give you a little feel of the wonderful time I spent with my father on the road. -

Our journey through the Triglav National Park begins on the northern edge of the triangular border of Slovenia, Italy and Austria, in Kranjska Gora, the best known and most well equipped ski resort in Slovenia. The Slap Peričnik in Sava Valley is one of the area’s many waterfalls and clearly demonstrates the mighty power of water. Where the foothills of the Alps descend to the Pannonian Basin, the longest underground cave railway in the world leads to the largest show cave in Slovenia. Postojnska Jama, a wonderworld of nature. For millions of years, large masses of water and the composition of the rock, have created this remarkable system of caves. Further south below the village of Škocjan is one of the most important cave systems in the world, the Škocjan Caves into which the Reka River has dug deep into the limestone. Here, nature has created a mysterious underground world: a labyrinth of caves, corridors and halls, decorated with stalactites of various shapes and sizes. In the middle of the barren karst landscape near Trieste is a wonderful forest and the world famous Lipica Horse Stud, since 1580 the original home of the Lipizzaner, and a sprawling estate where the famous white horses are bred, raised and trained. Romantic towns and mediaeval fortresses, mountains, caves, waterfalls and lakes, Slovenia is a secret treasure situated in the heart of Europe!

On this journey we have travelled on the youngest of the ‘steam ladies’ of the Ljubljana Railway Museum. The 33-037 weighs a hundred and thirty six tons, is twenty three metres long and its tender can take nine tons of coal. The Bohinj Museum Train is a fabulous experience. Not one to be missed!

Open to the public and set within a karstic landscape where the foothills of the Alps merge with the Pannonian Plain, is the largest and longest cave system in Slovenia, Postojnska Jama, a wonderland of nature that also features the longest underground cave train in the world.In 1818, Luka Čeč discovered the first sections and, to date, more than twenty kilometres of cave passages have been explored. Of these, around five kilometres have been designated for general group visits. The temperature in the cave system maintains a constant eight degrees Celsius and its paths and bridges are easy to negotiate. In the nineteenth century Postojnska Jama was known throughout Europe and America and was visited by travellers, scientists and various monarchs. When in 1857 the railway line between Vienna and Trieste saw the opening of the Postojna Railway Station, cave tourism was born. Postojnska Jama, a truly timeless destination!

Perched on a hillside between Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea, Trieste is a mysterious place of melancholy sweetness, a magnet for writers, travellers, exiles and famous oddballs.
James Joyce wrote most of Dubliners, all of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and major portions of Ulysses during the 10 years he lived in Trieste, leaving only reluctantly after the outbreak of WWI. In a letter, he wrote, “Why is it I am destined to look so many times in my life with my eyes of longing on Trieste?”
A native of Trieste and the father of the modern Italian novel, Italo Svevo, was Joyce’s student. In his iconic novel, Zeno’s Conscience, Svevo brings a keenly sardonic wit to his observations of life in his city. Joyce and Svevo were not just master and pupil but good friends as well, so much so that Joyce used him as his inspiration for Ulysses’ Leopold Bloom.
Umberto Saba (1883-1957) was not only the proprietor of a still extant antiquarian bookstore but also one of Italy’s greatest 20th-century poets, using Jewish life in Trieste as the inspiration and core content of his work.
Trieste’s literary singularity was no accident. Situated at the apex of the Adriatic with a polyglot population of Italians, Slavs, Jews, Germans, and Greeks, the city became a seaside salon poised between the Mediterranean and Mitteleuropa; a place where different cultures intermingled and new ideas were incubated.
Jan Morris called Trieste “a loitering kind of place” and we will savour it slowly, at a relaxed tempo. Organized sightseeing is not what we will do. In Trieste a fixed itinerary, a checklist of monuments, is of little use. Instead, we will soak up its evocative atmosphere, be surprised by sights stumbled on serendipitously, ramble around town as Svevo and Joyce did together, stopping from time to time in an historic Viennese-style coffee house or a congenial bar.
In 2012 Lonely Planet listed the city of Trieste as the world’s most underrated travel destination.
We will conclude our trip with several days down the coast in Rovinj, a small city in north Croatia (Istria) known for its rich historical heritage, narrow cobbled streets, beautiful Italianate architecture, active fishing port and its magnificent natural setting.

In making of this video, we learned a lot about travel videos, for example always keep your batteries full and driving shots are boring. :) Therefore future videos will be a lot more interesting and insightful. Our cameras died when we came to the statue of Juliet in Verona (the main attraction, right?!) and when we were walking arround Firenze so i did not even include in the video (but we did go to see the Ufizzi gallery, i was just too much of a pussy to shoot any video there xD).
Where we stayed:
- near Verona: B&B; Dal Custode http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/B-and-B-Dal-Custode/Verona/65362 Great B&B; in a tiny medevial town just a 10min drive from Verona. We recommend!!
- near Firenze - Poggibonsi: La Moraia http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/italy/poggibonsi/40566/ (only accessible with car/bike) This one was truly magical!! On the top of Tuscany hills, with an amazing view of the surroundings! Yes, GPS had some slight problems navigating there, but then we got a map from the Housekeeper and quickly learned how to conviniently get to the Villa (it does include 300m of gravel road). You get your ovn apartment complete with kitchen and bathroom. They even have a pool and washing maschines! No internet though, it's wuite rural. This stay was truly magical and we highly recommend it! Great if you just want a quiet getaway and still be 30min from Firence and 10-20min from all the cute historical cities (San Gimignano, Voltura (they did NOT shoot Twilight here!!!). We loved this place :)
