As the rate of opioid addiction has surged in the United States, Mexico has become the world's third-largest producer of opium used to process heroin. Mexican cartels are now the primary suppliers of the drug to the US, producing a crude and unrefined form known as black tar.
VICE News travels to the fertile mountains of western Mexico, where we see the beginning of the path black tar heroin takes to the US on plantations growing poppies used to make opium. We then head across the US border to witness the human cost there of the lucrative but destructive heroin trade.

With a $40 billion drug-trafficking business, several corrupt and violent groups in Mexico have emerged over the years as they attempt to control more money, land, and power. With it comes a natural struggle amongst one another in what's led to countless deaths throughout the country. As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks.

Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres
August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.”
Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement.

Mexican Americans are Americans of Mexican descent. As of July 2009, Mexican Americans make up 10.3% of the United States' population with over 31,689,000 Americans listed as of Mexican ancestry. Mexican Americans comprise 66% of all Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. The United States is home to the second largest Mexican community in the world second only to Mexico itself comprising nearly 22% of the entire Mexican origin population of the world. Canada is a distant third with a Mexican origin population of 37,000 as of 2001 although increasing to 61,505 as of 2006. In addition, as of 2008 there were approximately 7,000,000 undocumented Mexicans living in the United States which if included in the count would increase the US share to over 28% of the world's Mexican origin population (Note that some of the undocumented would be captured in the US Census count depending on their willingness to provide information). Over 60% of all Mexican Americans reside in the states of California and Texas. Most Mexican Americans are the descendants of the Indigenous peoples of Mexico and/or Europeans, especially Spaniards.

As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks. Today's topic was requested by Alltime Conspiracies. Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.” Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement. -

As the rate of opioid addiction has surged in the United States, Mexico has become the world's third-largest producer of opium used to process heroin. Mexican cartels are now the primary suppliers of the drug to the US, producing a crude and unrefined form known as black tar.

With a $40 billion drug-trafficking business, several corrupt and violent groups in Mexico have emerged over the years as they attempt to control more money, land, and power. With it comes a natural struggle amongst one another in what's led to countless deaths throughout the country. As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks.

Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres
August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.”
Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement.

With a $40 billion drug-trafficking business, several corrupt and violent groups in Mexico have emerged over the years as they attempt to control more money, land, and power. With it comes a natural struggle amongst one another in what's led to countless deaths throughout the country. As members rise, leaders fall, and lives are lost, blood is constantly being shed in a society where murder is synonymous with success. We now present to you, the top 10 horrific Mexican cartel attacks.

Number 10: The San Fernando Massacres
August, 2010: Los Zetas—a notoriously ruthless Mexican drug cartel—intercepts buses trafficking 73 immigrants and executes all but one. They kidnap and slaughter the victims to deprive their rival, The Gulf Cartel, of the reinforcements they sent for. The lone survivor was an Ecuadorian man who was shot at the head but fortunately, the bullet missed his brain. After a shootout with Los Zetas, Mexican military units found the 72 bodies in a mass grave. This 2010 massacre took place along Highway 101 in San Fernando, Mexico and since then has been known as “The Highway of Death.”
Justice for the victims did not come, however, as the power and brutality of Los Zetas is greater than the law enforcement and government control. The Chief of Police investigating the massacre was murdered. Additionally, a year after the first massacre, 193 bodies of victim immigrants were found to have met the same violent fate. In 2011, the drug lord responsible for the massacres, Edgar “El Wache“ Montiel, was captured by Mexican Federal Police along with 80 other members of Los Zetas. “El Wache” Montiel bragged that some of the immigrants were forced to fight each other to death for the cartel members’ amusement.

This is my easy and spicy Mexican chicken fajitas.
Fajitas are a big favorite in our family. They are so
versatile, easy and fun to make. Enjoy.
Mexican Chicken Fajitas - My Way
INGREDIENTS:
4-6 large tortillas
1 - 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast sliced
in strips
1 thinly sliced green bell pepper
1 thinly sliced red bell pepper
1 thinly sliced red onion - I had white scallion onions
1 seeded and finely diced jalapeno - OPTIONAL
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 chipotle pepper (1/2 for the cooking and 1/2 for
the salsa)
Chicken SPICES:
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Add above spices, lemon juice and olive oil to chicken
pieces and rub in well. Let set for 10 minutes or more.
Add 2 tbsp oil to medium high skillet. Add seasoned chicken
and cook for 5-8 minutes until the chicken is done. Remove
from the pan with slotted spoon letting any liquids behind.
Set chicken to the side.
Add 1 tbsp oil to same pan and add vegetables. Cook for 1
minute and add minced garlic, 1/2 chipotle pepper and stir.
Add 1/4 cup of water if needed to help vegetables cook.
Cook for 3-4 minutes and add chicken back into the skillet.
Stir until well combined and remove from the heat.
Serving tonight with my homemade Mexican salsa,
sliced avocado, chopped leaf greens, sour cream
and a squeeze of lime.
HOMEMADE MEXICAN SALSA:
1 cup finely diced tomatoes
4-5 finely dice roasted red peppers
1 can of finely diced green chilies
1 tbsp minced red onion
salt and pepper to taste
1-2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 of small chipotle pepper finely minced
Mix above ingredients together in bowl. Refrigerate
for 1-2 hours - better overnight.
Enjoy.

In 1521, the Spanish Empire conquered and colonized the territory from its base in Mexico-Tenochtitlan, which was administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This territory would eventually become Mexico following recognition of the colony's independence in 1821. The tumultuous post-independence period was characterized by economic instability, the Mexican-American War that led to the territorial cession to the United States, the Pastry War, the Franco-Mexican War, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which culminated with the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution and the emergence of the country's current political system.
Mexico has one of the world's largest and most diversified economies, with an abundance of natural resources such as oil and silver. It has the fifteenth largest nominal GDP and the eleventh largest GDP by purchasing power parity. The Mexican economy is strongly linked to those of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, especially the United States. Mexico was the first Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD (since 1994), and is classified as an upper-middle income country by the World Bank and a newly industrialized country by several analysts. By 2050, Mexico could become the world's fifth or seventh largest economy. The country is subsequently considered both a regional power and middle power, and is often identified as an emerging global power. Most prison gangs do more than offer simple protection for their members. Most often, prison gangs are responsible for any drug, tobacco or alcohol handling inside correctional facilities. Furthermore, many prison gangs involve themselves in prostitution, assaults, kidnappings and murders. Prison gangs often seek to intimidate other inmates (pressuring them to relinquish their food and other resources) and bribe or intimidate prison staff (to ensure they can go about their activities without interference, and to create links to the outside).
In addition, prison gangs often exercise a large degree of influence over organized crime in the "free world", larger than their isolation in prison might lead one to expect. Since the 1980s, larger prison gangs have used their influence inside prison systems to control and profit from drug trafficking on the street. This is made possible based upon the logic that individuals involved in selling illegal drugs face a high likelihood of serving a prison term at some point or in having a friend or family member in prison.

Most prison gangs do more than offer simple protection for their members. Most often, prison gangs are responsible for any drug, tobacco or alcohol handling inside correctional facilities. Furthermore, many prison gangs involve themselves in prostitution, assaults, kidnappings and murders. Prison gangs often seek to intimidate other inmates (pressuring them to relinquish their food and other resources) and bribe or intimidate prison staff (to ensure they can go about their activities without interference, and to create links to the outside).
In addition, prison gangs often exercise a large degree of influence over organized crime in the "free world", larger than their isolation in prison might lead one to expect. Since the 1980s, larger prison gangs have used their influence inside prison systems to control and profit from drug trafficking on the street. This is made possible based upon the logic that individuals involved in selling illegal drugs face a high likelihood of serving a prison term at some point or in having a friend or family member in prison.

The Barrio Azteca or Los Aztecas (pronounced: [los asˈtekas]), is a Mexican-American gang originally based in El Paso, Texas. The gang was formed in the jails of El Paso in 1986 and expanded into a transnational criminal organization. They are currently one of the most violent gangs in the United States and are said to have over 3,000 members in the U.S. in locations such as New Mexico, Texas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and at least 5,000 members in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
In 2008, Barrio Azteca formed an alliance with La Línea, the armed wing of the Juárez Cartel, to fight off the forces of the Sinaloa Cartel, who were attempting to take over the drug smuggling routes in the area. The control of the routes in Ciudad Juárez, known as the "Juárez plaza," are vital for the drug trafficking organizations since they are the major illicit conduit into the United States. The DEA estimates that about 70% of the cocaine that enters the United States flows through the area. The gang's main source of income derives from smuggling drugs across the border from Mexico into the United States. They are also responsible for the distribution and sale of narcotics in and outside of prisons. Aside from drug trafficking, they have been charged with a number of different crimes.
The gang, which operates in the U.S. and Mexico, has morphed into a prime example of the "cross-border nature of Mexico's drug war." Members of the Barrio Azteca gang usually have U.S. citizenship, making them ideal cross-border killers that move back and forth across the U.S.-Mexico border.
