“I always wanted a V8, manual, rear-drive—and then there was Smokey and the Bandit,” says Gregg Hamilton, “When I moved here to America, [I realized] this is the only place in the world where I can really own one.”
Wanting something that’s American, New Zealander Hamilton settled on this Pontiac Trans Am—that is definitely not like any other. Using tricks learned from years of working with some of the best World Rally Championship teams in the world—including Toyota Team Europe and Prodrive—Hamilton’s Firebird has been given handling to match its extensive engine modifications.
“I needed something to do, so we found this car on eBay, and flew to Alabama, picked it up at the airport sight unseen…[and] it sort of just evolved into what it is today.”
From its wider bodywork, to custom engine computer, to fully revised suspension and brakes, it’s “about as quick as a Z06 Corvette,” he says. Sound far-fetched? As someone whose day job is spent building and testing Ken Block’s latest projects, we’d believe him.
“I like the mechanical-ness of it. I like the engine bay…I like that you can see the injectors, and plug for ECU…There’s no wheel arches in there, so you can see the uprights and the roll bar,” says Hamilton.
“It’s not always about the drive for me. It’s about the build of it. It’s about tinkering with it…”

Pontiac meant performance and style, from the 1950's all the way up to their unexpected cancellation announcement in 2009. I decided to make a second Pontiac retrospective, adding to the original 4 minute clip I previously posted. In this version, I've attempted to show a chronological timeline of sorts for Pontiac, including their WWII production, right up to an explanation as to what happened to Pontiac's mystique and credibility in the 2000's.
The Pontiac nameplate will be discontinued, but Pontiac fans around the world will never forget.
Pontiacs were cool. They were fun. They had style. Their designs were built on pure driving passion, excitement, and performance.
We'll miss them...

(1956-93). Some great basic Pontiac history, along with the CARS and PEOPLE (Bunkie Knudsen, John Delorean, Jim Wangers, Pete Estes, etc) who made Pontiac great in those years. In 1956 Bunkie Knudsen was hired as Pontiac's General Manager. He was told by GM "Turn Pontiac around in 5 years or the division is gone". Within about a year he quickly assembled a great team. Knudsen was fortunate enough to pick up engineer John Delorean from Packard when that company closed, Delorean later became the father of the GTO and MANY Pontiac Innovations. Knudsen was also fortunate enough to lure a brilliant "Olds Rocket V8" engineer away from Oldsmobile---Pete Estes who helped the Pontiac V8 breath as well as it could.

Being able to check a few cars off our bucket list, we decided to compare GTOs. Davin has picked the aggressive muscle of a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge, equipped with a 366 HP 400 V-8 High Output engine with Ram Air III. Matt picked a bit of a cheater 2006 Pontiac Custom GTO. The modern GTO is straight from GM Performance with a Twin Turbo LS2 with 750 HP. Which one would you rather drive?

1968 GTO Engine Buildup original numbers matching parts. This is a long video starting with documentation from Pontiac Historical Services, It continues with date codes on car and engine castings. Block preparation and buildup continues through engine install. Pontiac 400's are a lot different than chevy stuff so if you working on your own or taking it to the machine shop there will be a little to learn here for everyone. These buildup tips would also apply to Pontiac 326, 389, 421, 428, and 455 configurations with just minor differences.

Its 455 CID and 655 hp are some impressive numbers, but how will it be on the road?

Pontiac was an automobile brand that was established in 1926 as a companion make for General Motors' Oakland. Quickly overtaking its parent in popularity, it supplanted the Oakland brand entirely by 1933 and, for most of its life, became a companion make for Chevrolet. Pontiac was sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico by General Motors (GM). Pontiac was marketed as the performance division of General Motors for many years, specializing in mainstream performance vehicles. Pontiac was relatively more popular in Canada, where for much of its history it was marketed as a low-priced vehicle.
On April 27, 2009, amid ongoing financial problems and restructuring efforts, GM announced it would discontinue the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010 and focus on four core brands in North America: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC. The last Pontiacs were built in late 2009, with the final dealer franchises expiring October 31, 2010.
The Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works was incorporated in July 1899 by Albert G. North and Harry G. Hamilton. By 1905 they had taken over the manufacturing of the Rapid Truck (from the Rapid Motor Vehicle Co.) that had been introduced two years earlier. In 1907 they decided to produce an automobile.

Burton Milo "Burt" Reynolds, Jr. (born February 11, 1936) is an American actor, director and voice artist. Some of his memorable roles include Bo 'Bandit' Darville in Smokey and the Bandit, Lewis Medlock in Deliverance, Bobby "Gator" McCluskey in White Lightning and sequel Gator, Paul Crewe and Coach Nate Scarborough in The Longest Yard and its 2005 remake respectively, Billy Clyde Puckett in Semi-Tough, J.J. McClure in The Cannonball Run, the voice of Charlie B. Barkin in All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Jack Horner in Boogie Nights.
Reynolds' parents were Burton Milo Reynolds, Sr. (1906–2002), who had Cherokee and Irish ancestry, and his wife, Fern H. (née Miller). Reynolds was born in Lansing, Michigan. He states in his autobiography that his family was living in Lansing, Michigan, when his father was drafted into the United States Army. Reynolds, his mother and his sister joined his father at Fort Leonard Wood, where they lived for two years. When Reynolds's father was sent to Europe, the family returned to Lansing. In 1946, Reynolds moved to Riviera Beach, Florida, with his parents. His father, Burt Sr., later became Chief of Police of Riviera Beach. Riviera Beach is the next town north of West Palm Beach.

PONTIAC - The Glory Years! Part 1 of 5
(1956-93). Some great basic Pontiac history, along with the CARS and PEOPLE (Bunkie Knudsen, John Delorean, Jim Wangers, Pete Estes, etc) who made Pontiac great in those years. In 1956 Bunkie Knudsen was hired as Pontiac's General Manager. He was told by GM "Turn Pontiac around in 5 years or the division is gone". Within about a year he quickly assembled a great team. Knudsen was fortunate enough to pick up engineer John Delorean from Packard when that company closed, Delorean later became the father of the GTO and MANY Pontiac Innovations. Knudsen was also fortunate enough to lure a brilliant "Olds Rocket V8" engineer away from Oldsmobile---Pete Estes who helped the Pontiac V8 breath as well as it could. -

“I always wanted a V8, manual, rear-drive—and then there was Smokey and the Bandit,” says Gregg Hamilton, “When I moved here to America, [I realized] this is the only place in the world where I can really own one.”
Wanting something that’s American, New Zealander Hamilton settled on this Pontiac Trans Am—that is definitely not like any other. Using tricks learned from years of working with some of the best World Rally Championship teams in the world—including Toyota Team Europe and Prodrive—Hamilton’s Firebird has been given handling to match its extensive engine modifications.
“I needed something to do, so we found this car on eBay, and flew to Alabama, picked it up at the airport sight unseen…[and] it sort of just evolved into what it is today.”
From its wider bodywork, to custom engine computer, to fully revised suspension and brakes, it’s “about as quick as a Z06 Corvette,” he says. Sound far-fetched? As someone whose day job is spent building and testing Ken Block’s latest projects, we’d believe him.
“I like the mechanical-ness of it. I like the engine bay…I like that you can see the injectors, and plug for ECU…There’s no wheel arches in there, so you can see the uprights and the roll bar,” says Hamilton.
“It’s not always about the drive for me. It’s about the build of it. It’s about tinkering with it…”

I decided to make a second Pontiac retrospective, adding to the original 4 minute clip I previously posted. In this version, I've attempted to show a chronological timeline of sorts for Pontiac, including their WWII production, right up to an explanation as to what happened to Pontiac's mystique and credibility in the 2000's.
The Pontiac nameplate will be discontinued, but Pontiac fans around the world will never forget.
Pontiacs were cool. They were fun. They had style. Their designs were built on pure driving passion, excitement, and performance.
We'll miss them...

Today on “Generation Gap,” we’re visiting the Lingenfelter Collection. Known for Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, Ken Lingenfelter was kind enough to let us experience some of his personal cars. Being able to check a few cars off our bucket list, we decided to compare GTOs. Davin has picked the aggressive muscle of a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge, equipped with a 366 HP 400 V-8 High Output engine with Ram Air III. Matt picked a bit of a cheater 2006 Pontiac Custom GTO. The modern GTO is straight from GM Performance with a Twin Turbo LS2 with 750 HP. Which one would you rather drive?

1968 GTO Engine Buildup original numbers matching parts. This is a long video starting with documentation from Pontiac Historical Services, It continues with date codes on car and engine castings. Block preparation and buildup continues through engine install. Pontiac 400's are a lot different than chevy stuff so if you working on your own or taking it to the machine shop there will be a little to learn here for everyone. These buildup tips would also apply to Pontiac 326, 389, 421, 428, and 455 configurations with just minor differences.
