Mervyn LeRoy, a movie director and producer discusses his philosophy of what makes a good story, and discovering stars in Hollywood's golden age. From his humble beginnings selling newspapers outside the Alcazar Theater and introduction into vaudeville, LeRoy went on to direct his first movie at age 28. He made his career producing films like "Little Caesar" and "The Wizard of Oz."

A young Frank Sinatra is in the studio with a full orchestra. He records a take of 'If You Are But a Dream,' then breaks for a smoke. From the studio, he steps into an alley where he sees nearly a dozen kids chasing one smaller boy. Frank stops them, asks why, and they tell him it's because of the boy's religion. So Frank asks them if they're Nazis and explains a few things about America, blood banks, World War II, and teamwork. Then he sings 'The House I Live In' for them. Off the lads scamper, and the kid Frank's saved gives him a look of gratitude.

Even though he didn't have a starter in the Kentucky Derby, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert did win a graded stakes on the first Saturday of May.
Perfectly positioned throughout by jockey Martin Garcia, Liaison won for the second time in as many 2013 starts, taking the $150,250 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.
The1 ½ length victory in the Grade II was the first in a graded affair for Liasion since he won the Grade I CashCall Futurity Dec. 17, 2011.
The 4-year-old son of Indian Charlie and the Victory mare Galloping Gal had subsequently gone 0-for-8 in graded events -- including a sixth place finish in the 2012 Kentucky Derby -- prior to his LeRoy success.
Liaison wasn't the only CashCall Futurity winner to cash in a stakes Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park. Comma to the Top, the 2010 champ in the lucrative event for 2-year-olds, captured the $80,740 Cool Frenchy Stakes earlier in the afternoon.
After stalking the pace set by 2-1 favorite -- and former stablemate - Blueskiesnrainbows -- for most of the trip, Liaison took over early in the stretch and kicked away under left and right-handed encouragement.
Owned by Arnold Zetcher LLC, Liaison won for the fifth time in 14 starts while completing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.79. The $90,000 payday pushed his earnings to $721,794. Three of the Kentucky bred's victories have come over Cushion Track. He has not been worse than third in five Betfair Hollywood Park starts.
Liaison paid $7.80, $4 and $2.80 while completing a natural hat trick for Baffert. The stable also won the eighth race with impressive first time starter Donelle and the ninth with 3-2 favorite Midnight Crooner.

Mervyn LeRoy (October 15, 1900 - September 13, 1987) was an American film director, film producer and sometime actor.
Born to Jewish parents in San Francisco, his family was financially ruined by the 1906 earthquake. (His paternal grandfather owned a successful San Francisco department store that was destroyed in the quake; the store was heavily insured, but the insurance company went bankrupt in the aftermath of the earthquake.) To make money, young Mervyn sold newspapers and entered talent shows as a singer. Through this he worked his way into vaudeville. When his act broke up, he and his cousin, Jesse Lasky, went to Hollywood.
LeRoy worked in costumes, processing labs and as a camera assistant until he became a gag writer and actor in silent films. His first directing job was in 1927's No Place to Go. When his movies made lots of money without costing too much, he became well-received in the movie business.
In 1931 he directed two key films which launched Edward G. Robinson into major stardom, the Oscar-nominated critique of tabloid journalism Five Star Final, and the classic gangster epic Little Caesar. From that point forward, LeRoy would be responsible for a diverse variety of films as a director and producer. In 1938 he was chosen as head of production at MGM, where he was responsible for the decision to make The Wizard of Oz. He was responsible for discovering Clark Gable, Loretta Young, Robert Mitchum and Lana Turner.

A young Frank Sinatra is in the studio with a full orchestra. He records a take of 'If You Are But a Dream,' then breaks for a smoke. From the studio, he steps into an alley where he sees nearly a dozen kids chasing one smaller boy. Frank stops them, asks why, and they tell him it's because of the boy's religion. So Frank asks them if they're Nazis and explains a few things about America, blood banks, World War II, and teamwork. Then he sings 'The House I Live In' for them. En 1891 se matriculó en el curso de ciencias de la Universidad par isiense de la Sorbona. Pasados dos años, finalizó sus estudios de física con el número uno de su promoción. En 1894 conoció a Pierre Curie. En este momenrto, los dos trabajaban en el campo del magnetismo. Con 35 años, Pierre Curie era una brillante esperanza en la física francesa. Se enamoró enseguida de aquella fina y casi austera polaca de 27 años que compartía su fe altruista en la ciencia. Después de que Pierre Curie le propone matrimonio y la convence para que viva en París, celebran el 26 de julio de 1895, su boda con una sencillez extrema: ni fiesta, ni alianzas, ni vestido blanco. La novia luce ese día un traje azul común y corriente y luego, con su novio, monta en una bicicleta para iniciar la luna de miel por las carreteras de Francia. Marie Curie estaba interesada en los recientes descubrimientos de los nuevos tipos de radiación.
