This is my tribute to the life and work of atmospheric sciences researcher Dr. Ted Fujita - "Mr. Tornado" - with a sampling of his many pioneering efforts to unlock the mystery of severe storms. As a student at Meiji College in his native Japan, Fujita's early research projects included the study of atom bomb damage at Hiroshima and Nagasaki (where he first recognized the circular blast patterns he would later find left behind by downbursts), wind and pressure patterns during the passage of thunderstorms, and weather changes observed during a solar eclipse. A chance encounter with the thunderstorm research work of Dr. Horace Byers brought him to the United States in the mid 1950s, and his first major research effort in the U.S. was a groundbreaking analysis of the Fargo, ND tornado of 1957 that was unprecedented in its detail and scope. From there he would go on to investigate numerous tornado and severe weather events - including the Palm Sunday Outbreak of 1965 and the Super Outbreak of 1974 - and was among the first to recognize and diagram the nature of downbursts, microbursts, and multiple vortices in tornadoes. His Fujita Scale of Tornado Intensity is still in use today (albeit with modifications). Dr. Fujita's work truly ushered in the modern era of severe storms research. Daarnaast kunnen ook tornado's voorkomen die niet met een rotatie van de gehele bui samenhangen, of bij buienwolken niet in hun geheel roteren. In het laatste geval zijn ze vaak niet zo krachtig en worden ze vaak windhoos genoemd. De krachtigste tornado's komen voor bij supercelbuien. Deze buien bezitten een roterende stijgstroom en vormen zich meestal wanneer de windsnelheid in de atmosfeer sterk toeneemt met de hoogte. Voorwaarde voor het ontstaan van deze — en andere felle — onweersbuien is dat de temperatuur sterk afneemt met de hoogte, terwijl er bij het aardoppervlak vochtige lucht aanwezig is, lucht die veel waterdamp bevat. Wanneer de waterdamp in de stijgstroom van de bui condenseert tot waterdruppels, komt warmte vrij die ervoor zorgt dat de stijgstroom warmer blijft dan zijn omgeving en daardoor in stand blijft. Warme lucht zet uit en stijgt op door de opwaartse kracht. De rotatie rond een verticale as in een supercel ontstaat door het kantelen van de rotatie (of preciezer: vorticiteit) rond een horizontale as, die aanwezig is in een stroming waarin de windsnelheid met de hoogte verandert. Dit verklaart waarom voor de sterkste tornado's die met supercellen samenhangen, steeds een sterke verandering van de windsnelheid met de hoogte aanwezig is. Tornado's komen relatief vaak in het centrale deel van de Verenigde Staten voor, gemiddeld zo'n duizend per jaar. De meeste zijn niet sterk, maar sommige wel. Het gebied dat wel Tornado Alley genoemd wordt, van midden-Texas tot het oosten van Nebraska en Iowa heeft er het meest mee te maken, voornamelijk in de maanden april, mei en juni. Vochtige warme lucht stroomt vanuit de Golf van Mexico noordwaarts en schuift over de Tornado Alley onder een luchtlaag afkomstig uit Mexico en de Rocky Mountains, waarin de temperatuur sterk afneemt met de hoogte. Zo wordt aan de twee voorwaarden voor sterke onweersbuien voldaan. Daarbij komt, dat er een zuidelijke wind waait, waarvan de snelheid vlak boven het aardoppervlak sterk toeneemt met de hoogte. Dit wordt een low level jet genoemd. Rond 5 kilometer hoogte waait daarbij een sterke westelijke wind. Dit ruimen van de wind met de hoogte levert een extra bijdrage tot het ontstaan van rotatie in de eventuele buien die ontstaan. Het is vaak mogelijk gebieden waarin tornado's gaan voorkomen een aantal dagen tot uren van tevoren aan te wijzen. De exacte plaats en het exacte tijdstip zijn echter heel onvoorspelbaar. Mensen die meestal voor de kick op zoek gaan naar tornado's en/of zware onweersbuien worden tornadojagers of stormchasers (veelal in de Verenigde Staten) genoemd. Sommige tornadojagers zijn wetenschappers die metingen willen doen van temperatuur, druk en luchtvochtigheid in de directe nabijheid van een tornado, en de tornado met een radar scannen. Hiermee hopen ze het ontstaan van tornado's, waar nog veel onduidelijk over is, beter te begrijpen.
