The Wellcome Player doesn’t support this (yet) but Stanford’s Mirador viewer does. 15s As we’ve seen, the Wellcome Library makes the IIIF manifest endpoint link visible on the page, so it’s easy for us to grab it and use it. Here is the manifest for the archival Item that contains (amongst other things) the letter from Watson to Crick. 25s We can load it into Mirador… Mirador doesn’t support search within (yet) so we can’t find it quite so easily amongst the other letters in this archival shoebox. 15s load second into Mirador and… 40s In this segment, I am still logged in at the Wellcome Library. These images are being served from the Wellcome Library, they are not coming via Stanford. The Mirador viewer has no idea about access control on these images. The Auth work on the API will define a way of asserting in the JSON-LD that an authentication service is available on an image, and will provide a pattern for supplying a degraded response (all the way down to a “forbidden” status) but there is some UX work to do to ensure a good experience in remote viewers. Obviously if you’re building a flickr gallery you probably wouldn’t want to do it with access controlled resources, but for archival material it’s an important concern. 90s annotations. Let’s make some annotations on these images. Mirador has some annotation support, and the Wellcome Player/ BL viewer will have annotation support in the future. This example here shows the most rudimentary kind of annotation, a simple text note on a region of the canvas. Where do the annotations get stored? That would be a platform service. A read and write annotation server. Also viewers can allow users to make private annotation lists – the end user should be able to choose where the annotations are persisted, so that you can make annotations for your own private use.
