In August 2013 we embarked on a major development project to make Wellcome Collection bigger and bolder than ever before. Our key ambition was to open up the building, offering a more immersive experience for visitors who want to delve deeper into the themes we explore.
With the help of Stirling Prize-winning architects Wilkinson Eyre, we’ve created a stunning staircase leading to more gallery spaces and some beautiful spaces for our public events. Our new level 1 gallery showcases year-long thematic exhibitions (currently showing The Institute of Sexology); our new Studio provides the perfect workspace for 14-to-19-year-olds and a spectacular new incarnation of our Reading Room acts as a bridge between exhibitions and the Library. We’ve also created a new restaurant, Wellcome Kitchen, as a space to relax and recharge.
The Wellcome Library has undergone transformations with more study areas and an expanded Rare Materials Room. The first residents of The Hub, Hubbub, have been working behind the scenes to explore how we understand busyness and rest.
Many of you have joined us on our curious journey through the dust and noise of the development project. We now invite you to be part of our exciting next chapter.

Double Helix
26s Wiki page history – The Double Helix was James Watson’s memoir of the discovery of the structure of DNA. The book is fairly notorious for its depiction of the scientific process as motivated by one-upmanship, personal glory and sometimes underhand appropriation of results. If we’re looking at this Wiki page we can see hints of the objections to Watson’s book from other parties. Let’s try to find more…
22s finding first archive – So we know that Watson’s archives are available at the Wellcome Library and we know that the working title for the book was “Honest Jim”. So we can go to the Wellcome Library site and search for this archive. I’m going to take some short cuts in these sequences. There are quite a few items in the Watson archive so here anything that could search the OCRed, or transcribed images, and also search any published annotations on those images, would be beneficial
15s not the right archive. Wellcome Library has some searching available on OCRed archives but not much, but no annotation or transcription support (yet).
30s intro and find letter – But they do have search within, a service which would be part of the DLCS. If we’re looking for Watson’s letters to Crick then searching for “Dear Francis” makes sense, and will eventually lead us to the correct letter. IIIF does not yet have a formal vocabulary for describing the availability of search services on manifests or image sequences, but this will be finalised by May and will be in the 2.1 specs.
30s looking at Watson’s letter – You can see that the Wellcome infrastructure does support search within, and it will be very easy for us to adapt our ad-hoc, non-standard API for it to a IIIF JSON-LD flavoured version.
Looking at Watson’s letter you can see it’s quite conciliatory, he’s assuring his friend Crick that most of his concerns have been addressed.

Now we’re going to continue our research by looking at these two manuscripts side by side and maybe making some annotations on them. The Wellcome Player doesn’t support this (yet) but Stanford’s Mirador viewer does.
15s As we’ve seen, the Wellcome Library makes the IIIF manifest endpoint link visible on the page, so it’s easy for us to grab it and use it. Here is the manifest for the archival Item that contains (amongst other things) the letter from Watson to Crick.
25s We can load it into Mirador… Mirador doesn’t support search within (yet) so we can’t find it quite so easily amongst the other letters in this archival shoebox.
15s load second into Mirador and…
40s In this segment, I am still logged in at the Wellcome Library. These images are being served from the Wellcome Library, they are not coming via Stanford. The Mirador viewer has no idea about access control on these images. The Auth work on the API will define a way of asserting in the JSON-LD that an authentication service is available on an image, and will provide a pattern for supplying a degraded response (all the way down to a “forbidden” status) but there is some UX work to do to ensure a good experience in remote viewers. Obviously if you’re building a flickr gallery you probably wouldn’t want to do it with access controlled resources, but for archival material it’s an important concern.
90s annotations. Let’s make some annotations on these images. Mirador has some annotation support, and the Wellcome Player/ BL viewer will have annotation support in the future. This example here shows the most rudimentary kind of annotation, a simple text note on a region of the canvas. Where do the annotations get stored? That would be a platform service. A read and write annotation server. Also viewers can allow users to make private annotation lists – the end user should be able to choose where the annotations are persisted, so that you can make annotations for your own private use.
