The first internet transaction was a drug deal. In 1972, Stanford students using Arpanet accounts at Stanford University's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory engaged in a commercial transaction with their counterparts at Massachussetts Institute of Technology. Before Amazon, before eBay, the seminal act of e-commerce was a drug deal. The students used the network to quietly arrange the sale of an undetermined amount of marijuana. After Tupac was cremated, his ashes were mixed with marijuana and smoked by members of his hip-hop group, Outlawz. Munch (no etymological relationship to the word that would later be used to describe the insatiable hunger one feels after smokin a doob) testified in court, under oath, that he had smoked marijuana, and it turned him into a bat. Dr. Munch was the “official expert” on marijuana for the U.S. government from 1938 to 1962. Scientists have created a scientific version of marijuana called ‘Dimethylheptylpyran’. The only country where cannabis is completely legal and claimed to be a legal right to possess, is North Korea who doesn’t even consider Marijuana to be a drug. Alcohol and beer companies, fearing competition for the dollars Americans spend on leisure, are one of the top five opponents to marijuana legalization. Also included on the list are Police Unions: who have become dependent on federal drug war grants to finance their budget. Private Prisons Corporations: that make millions by incarcerating people who have been imprisoned for drug crimes, including marijuana. Pharmaceutical Corporations: who’s pharmaceutical interests would like to keep marijuana illegal so, that Americans, of course, don’t have the option of cheap medical alternatives to their products. Prison Guard Unions: who have a vested interest in keeping people behind bars just like for-profit prison companies. Snack food companies, on the other hand, are all for the idea of MJ legalization – hmm, I wonder why.
