Nick Kyrgios (Greek:Νίκος Κύργιος; born 27 April 1995)^[1] is an Australian tennis player who won the boy's singles event at the 2013 Australian Open.

Personal Life[link]

Kyrgios was born in Canberra, Australia on 27 April 1995. Kyrgios' father George was born in Georgani, Greece and is of Greek heritage and his mother Norlaila comes from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kyrgios' father is a tradesman (painter) and his mother is a software engineer. Nicholas Hilmy Kyrgios (Nick for short) is the third of three children. Christos Kyrgios is his elder brother who is 26 years old (lawyer) and Halimah Kyrgios is his sister who is 23 years old (musical theater performer). Kyrgios attended Radford College until Year 8 and completed his Year 12 certificate in 2012 at Daramalan College in Canberra. Kyrgios was a promising basketball player and had represented ACT, Australia in basketball until he made the decision to focus solely on his tennis when he was 14 years old. Kyrgios gained a full scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2012 where he was able to further develop his tennis. Kyrgios is an avid Celtics fan. ^[2]

Junior Career[link]

On January 21 2013 Kyrgios gained the number 1 junior ranking by defeating Wayne Montgomery in the final of the Australian Open lead up tournament in Traralgon, Australia. ^[3] Kyrios would enter the 2013 Australian Open juniors tournament as number 3 seed and steamroll his way to the final with straight sets victories over Cem İlkel, Cameron Norrie, Omar Jasika, Wayne Montgomery and Filippo Baldi. In the final Kyrgios faced fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis and after saving two set points in the first set he came out victorious 7–6(4) 6–3. ^[4]

Professional career[link]

2012[link]

Kyrgios had a good chance to win his first round qualifying match at the 2012 Australian Open after winning the first set in a tiebreak. His apponent Mathieu Rodrigues crusied through the rest of the match eventually defeating Kyrgios. 7–6(3) 3–6 2–6.

Kyrgios then competed on the 2012 ITF Men's Circuit for the rest of the season. Competing in tournaments in Australia, Japan and Slovenia. The highlights on the circuit for him coming at the end of the season where he reached a semi-final and a quarterfinal in Australian tournaments.

2013[link]

Kyrgios played his first professional tournament of the year at the 2013 Brisbane International losing in the first round of qualifying to James Duckworth 1–6 6–7(4). He then lost in the first round of qualifying at the 2013 Australian Open to Bradley Klahn 3–6 2–6. After the loss, a postive Kyrgios mentioned that he wanted to make the top 300 by the end of the year. ^[5]
