Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (Italian: [anˈtɔːnjo ˈluːtʃo viˈvaldi]; 4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born in Venice, he is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He is known mainly for composing many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.
Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for preferment. However, the Emperor died soon after Vivaldi's arrival, and Vivaldi himself died less than a year later in poverty.
George Frederick or Georg Friedrich may refer to:
The Baroque orchestra is the type of orchestra that existed during the Baroque era, commonly identified as 1600-1750. Its origins were in France where Jean-Baptiste Lully added the newly re-designed hautbois and transverse flutes to his vingt-quatre violons du Roy. As well as violins and woodwinds, the baroque orchestra contained continuo instruments such as the theorbo and harpsichord.
In the Baroque period, the orchestra was not standardised in size. There were large differences in size, instrumentation and playing styles - and therefore orchestral soundscapes and palettes - between the various European regions. The 'Baroque orchestra' ranged from smaller orchestras (or ensembles) with one player per part, to larger scale orchestras with many players per part. Examples of the smaller variety were Bach's orchestras, for example in Koethen where he had access to an ensemble of up to 18 players. Examples of large scale Baroque orchestras would include Corelli's orchestra in Rome which ranged between 35 and 80 players for day-to-day performances, being enlarged to 150 players for special occasions.

From Simone's fabulous new album "Dramma", with some of the most virtuosic castrati arias ever written. This beautiful aria comes from the opera "Polifemo" by Porpora, one of the nearly-forgotten masters of the baroque period, especially written for Farinelli. This aria has always reminded me of the elegance and sophistication of the baroque period, conjuring dreams of fragrant dark purple velvet.
From Simone Kermes' lovely new album "Bel Canto: From Monteverdi to Verdi" Which explores the history and evolution of bel canto from baroque to romanticism. Though her voice is completely wrong for the role of Norma, she does a beautiful job with aria - a prayer for peace to the goddess of the moon. She also demonstrates immense breathe control and flexibility. I imagine her sound is closer to perhaps how Adelina Patti or Jenny Lind sang this piece.

Simone Kermes, one of the greatest baroque specialists around, I love the tenderness she sings with in this aria, and the B section is sung with a fierceness. From Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare", from Kermes' album "La Diva, Arias for Cuzzoni".

From Simone's new album "Belcanto: From Monteverdi to Verdi". This aria is most certainly not for a voice type like Simone's, but considering she has made a career singing lighter music, she does a good job conveying the dramatic outburst. Her voice lacks the weight and metal needed for Odabella, but she projects both high and low notes well, sings with more expression and musicianship than many dramatic sopranos who attempt this aria, and decorates the vocal line in an exquisite way. Overall, when taken as a stand alone work - without comparing it to Joan Sutherland's excellent performance - this is good.

"Cara tomba" Simone Kermes Le Musiche Nove under Claudio Osele from the opera Mitridate Eupatore (Act, IV, Scene 2) by Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) Libretto by Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti. Aria for Laodice: "Cara tomba del mio diletto nel tuo sen dammi ricetto, deh sii tomba anche per me. O deposito infelice! Se a te fui culla, e nutrice vuò morire anche con te." TRANSLATION: Dear tomb of my beloved, give me refuge within you, ah, be a tomb for me as well. O unhappy resting place! If I cradled and nursed you, I wish to die with you as well. First performed in Venice on January 5, 1707. A failure at its premiere, Mitridate Eupatore is now considered Scarlatti's finest opera.
