Hard and Soft Light
A beauty dish is unique in that it creates a hard light that has soft edges. It does not have a "hot spot" in the middle of it like most reflectors, and can be used to make portraits very compelling.

Why Distance Is Important
Beauty dishes have a "Sweet Spot" where they work the best. The reason this modifier exists is to create a hard light source with semi-soft edges, and no hot spot in the middle of the light. Perfect for portraits.
That being said, these are pretty much only good for portraits. You won't get the benefits of the light if your beauty dish is too far from your subject, it will just appear to be a small light source.
For most beauty dishes, you want to place them from 6 inches to 2 ft from your subject's face. .

Understanding the Beauty Dish

This lesson will help you understand the many uses of the Beauty Dish. I had the opportunity to shoot Liz Hernandez for her 2011 calendar. She was great to work with. We shot at Jamie Foxx's home which was a spectacular place. He was very gracious to allow us to have the run of his home. I used the Beauty Dish in almost very shot. I will break down the images form Liz's shoot to help gain a better understanding of how to use a Beauty Dish. We also set up a target on the wall at the studio to illustrate the pattern a dish creates. A wall will not tell you the whole story. If you want to see how it looks you need to see a face so we took images of Katie Lohmann against a white seamless to see how a dish looks on the face and background. This yielded some every interesting results that are worth looking at. The images are in the video and also posted on our Facebook page so you can take your time and scrutinize them. We will be putting technical data up on occasion for your review. This will include the photos and the meter reading showing how the dish falls off. I hope you find this interesting.
The video was shot on the Canon 5D, 7D and using Red Rock micro rigs. The Beauty Dish tests were done using a Hensel Beauty Dish.

Beauty dish
A beauty dish is a photographic lighting device that uses a parabolic reflector to distribute light towards a focal point. The light created is between that of a direct flash and a softbox, giving the image a wrapped, contrasted look, which adds a more dramatic effect.
There are two main differences between a beauty dish and a normal reflector. First, beauty dishes are inevitably larger than normal reflectors. For example, in one equipment line, reflectors range from 7 to 16 inch diameter, while the beauty light is 22 inches in diameter. From another manufacturer, their normal reflectors range from 7 to 13 inch diameter, with an approximate 21 inch diameter beauty dish.
Second, virtually every beauty dish has an opaque cover directly over the front of the light source in the center of the beauty dish, preventing direct light from hitting the subject. Thus, all the light that emanates from the beauty dish has bounced off the interior wall of the beauty dish, resulting in softer light than obtainable from a standard reflector.

Hard and Soft Light
A beauty dish is unique in that it creates a hard light that has soft edges. It does not have a "hot spot" in the middle of it like most reflectors, and can be used to make portraits very compelling.

Why Distance Is Important
Beauty dishes have a "Sweet Spot" where they work the best. The reason this modifier exists is to create a hard light source with semi-soft edges, and no hot spot in the middle of the light. Perfect for portraits.
That being said, these are pretty much only good for portraits. You won't get the benefits of the light if your beauty dish is too far from your subject, it will just appear to be a small light source.
For most beauty dishes, you want to place them from 6 inches to 2 ft from your subject's face. .

Understanding the Beauty Dish
by Jay P. Morgan
This lesson will help you understand the many uses of the Beauty Dish. I had the opportunity to shoot Liz Hernandez for her 2011 calendar. She was great to work with. We shot at Jamie Foxx's home which was a spectacular place. He was very gracious to allow us to have the run of his home. I used the Beauty Dish in almost very shot. I will break down the images form Liz's shoot to help gain a better understanding of how to use a Beauty Dish. We also set up a target on the wall at the studio to illustrate the pattern a dish creates. A wall will not tell you the whole story. If you want to see how it looks you need to see a face so we took images of Katie Lohmann against a white seamless to see how a dish looks on the face and background. This yielded some every interesting results that are worth looking at. The images are in the video and also posted on our Facebook page so you can take your time and scrutinize them. We will be putting technical data up on occasion for your review. This will include the photos and the meter reading showing how the dish falls off. I hope you find this interesting.
The video was shot on the Canon 5D, 7D and using Red Rock micro rigs. The Beauty Dish tests were done using a Hensel Beauty Dish.

I have extremely oily skin and so am always looking for a great primer that won't break me out, will help get rid of oil for hours and makes my foundation stay put. This primer (Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer SPF 30) hits all the marks. It's not cheap though: $48, eek!
Worth every penny, though, I promise.
