Deadly Police Shootout on Busy Highway Oregon Police Killed Gunman (Video)
Police released raw footage of a highway shootout that started when a man pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop all the while his kids were waiting in the car.
Oregon State Trooper Matthew Zistel sustained a bullet wound in his side when John Van Allen II, 34, fired several shots at him on Interstate 84. Allen is a trained military veteran who was on a road trip with his three children. He was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest, but you don't see that in the raw footage shooting.
Police identified the driver who was shot and killed after he reportedly fired on an Oregon State trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles Thursday.
John Van Allen II, 34, in the raw video footage as the gunman died from a single gunshot wound. Allen's family said that he was heading out of town on a road trip with his three kids, ages 10, 13 and 15, who were in the car at the time of the shooting. They don't understand why Allen, who they say is an Army veteran, pulled a gun on the trooper.
It's upsetting because he was trying to take his children on a road trip and this is a most unfortunate incident, but I'd just like to get to the bottom of it and find out what caused it all, said Allen's aunt, Deborah Morton-Hamlet.
The deadly shooting started just before 1 p.m. when a State trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by Allen. He reportedly got out and fired on Trooper Matthew Zistel, 26, hitting him in the side. In the Raw Footage of this shooting Zistel returned fire and Allen got back into his vehicle, Hastings said.
Allen was then found about a half mile down the road slumped over in his vehicle. Troopers tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said.
Zistel was taken to a nearby hospital with a mild gunshot wound to his left side. He was released Thursday evening, Hastings said. The juveniles were taken to The Dalles for questioning by investigators.

Interstate 84 was closed at Biggs Junction between mileposts 105 and 109 for several hours after the shooting. .

Columbia River
The Columbia River is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The river rises in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It flows northwest and then south into the US state of Washington, then turns west to form most of the border between Washington and the state of Oregon before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The river is 1,243 miles (2,000 km) long, and its largest tributary is the Snake River. Its drainage basin is roughly the size of France and extends into seven U.S. states and a Canadian province.
By volume, the Columbia is the fourth-largest river in the United States; it has the greatest flow of any North American river draining into the Pacific. The river's heavy flow and its relatively steep gradient gives it tremendous potential for the generation of electricity. The 14 hydroelectric dams on the Columbia's main stem and many more on its tributaries produce more hydroelectric power than those of any other North American river.

Oregon (
i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep, the canyon stretches for over 80 miles (130 km) as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. Extending roughly from the confluence of the Columbia with the Deschutes River down to eastern reaches of the Portland metropolitan area, the water gap furnishes the only navigable route through the Cascades and the only water connection between the Columbia River Plateau and the Pacific Ocean.
The gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area called the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area and is managed by the Columbia River Gorge Commission and the US Forest Service. The gorge is a popular recreational destination.

This hill is steep and full of hairpin curves ... and the heaviest trucks are limited to 18 mph, even in the summer. The day before this drive, the freeway was closed here due to bad winter conditions. On this day, the fog caused trucks to suddenly appear out of nowhere. The roads were marginally okay, though with an outside temperature in the mid -20s, that fog was likely doing a little freezing on the road surface. Video sped up to 4x. Deadly Police Shootout on Busy Highway Oregon Police Killed Gunman (Video)
Police released raw footage of a highway shootout that started when a man pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop all the while his kids were waiting in the car.
Oregon State Trooper Matthew Zistel sustained a bullet wound in his side when John Van Allen II, 34, fired several shots at him on Interstate 84. Allen is a trained military veteran who was on a road trip with his three children. He was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest, but you don't see that in the raw footage shooting.
Police identified the driver who was shot and killed after he reportedly fired on an Oregon State trooper during a traffic stop on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles Thursday.
John Van Allen II, 34, in the raw video footage as the gunman died from a single gunshot wound. Allen's family said that he was heading out of town on a road trip with his three kids, ages 10, 13 and 15, who were in the car at the time of the shooting. They don't understand why Allen, who they say is an Army veteran, pulled a gun on the trooper.
It's upsetting because he was trying to take his children on a road trip and this is a most unfortunate incident, but I'd just like to get to the bottom of it and find out what caused it all, said Allen's aunt, Deborah Morton-Hamlet.
The deadly shooting started just before 1 p.m. when a State trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by Allen. He reportedly got out and fired on Trooper Matthew Zistel, 26, hitting him in the side. In the Raw Footage of this shooting Zistel returned fire and Allen got back into his vehicle, Hastings said.
Allen was then found about a half mile down the road slumped over in his vehicle. Troopers tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Hastings said.
Zistel was taken to a nearby hospital with a mild gunshot wound to his left side. He was released Thursday evening, Hastings said. The juveniles were taken to The Dalles for questioning by investigators.

The roads were marginally okay, though with an outside temperature in the mid -20s, that fog was likely doing a little freezing on the road surface.
