I'm trying out a bass that Bob Wallace made. It has mandolin frets for the first 12 frets, then fretless for the rest. It is a very fun and responsive instrument. I'm playing through a Fender Frontman (guitar) amp. The envelope filter is an MXR M-82. Recorded on an iPod touch.

Does the EMC acquisition threaten Dell partnerships? | #DellWorld

The EMC acquisition announcement has the enterprise IT world in a tizzy. Even Dell’s partners aren’t entirely sure what to make of it, but some are holding ground, saying they have something unique to offer. And Nutanix, Inc. is no different.
Bob Wallace, VP of OEM sales at Nutanix, sat down with Stu Miniman, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Dell World 2015 to discuss his company’s partnership with Dell and how the EMC acquisition could possibly threaten that very alliance.
Nutanix and Dell
Nutanix is a relatively new start-up that’s got a strong partnership with Dell in the VDI space. Its specialty is providing hyperscaled VDI environments for big players, such as the FBI with whom Dell has a $28 million contract with. Wallace said that other federal agencies see this implementation between Dell and Nutanix and are considering getting in on the action too.
Not only are public entities looking for hyperscaled VDI, but so are large retailers, one of which is looking to move further workloads onto Dell XC hyperconverged infrastructure powered by Nutanix software, according to Wallace.
EMC’s VMware competition
theCUBE host Stu Miniman was quick to note that VMware, Inc., one of the better-known subsidiaries of EMC, provides a hyperconverged and hypervisor to customers in direct competition with Nutanix Acropolis, which provides similar functionality. Wallace was keen to mention that this is the new Dell and that Dell is going to look to offer its customers the best possible solutions and allow them to choose.
He believes Nutanix is ahead of what VMware has, and that’s borne out by the implementation and use of its hypervisor Acropolis. It will be key to watch as Dell merges sections of EMC and how it affects its partners and alliances.

Bob Wallace (May 29, 1949 – September 20, 2002), was the ninth Microsoft employee, first popular user of the term shareware, creator of the word processing program PC-Write, founder of the software company Quicksoft and an "online drug guru" who devoted much time and money into the research of psychedelic drugs. Bob was also noted for ending his Usenet posts with the phrase, "Bob Wallace (just my opinion)."
Bob Wallace was born in Arlington, Virginia. He first worked on computers as a member of an Explorer Scout troop sponsored by Control Data Corp. in Bethesda, Maryland. His father was an economist who later became Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during the administration of John F. Kennedy.
Bob attended Brown University and later received his Masters in computer science from the University of Washington.
Wallace worked at the Retail Computer Store in Seattle, where he learned about Microsoft after Bill Gates put up a sign advertising for programmers. He joined Microsoft in 1978 as the 9th employee. His first project was to connect a computer to an IBM Selectric typewriter so the company could print software manuals. In the late 1970s, Wallace and Gates were known for their hijinks, and one incident involved breaking into a construction site and driving bulldozers, at one point almost running over Gates's Porsche.

The EMC acquisition announcement has the enterprise IT world in a tizzy. Even Dell’s partners aren’t entirely sure what to make of it, but some are holding ground, saying they have something unique to offer. And Nutanix, Inc. is no different.
Bob Wallace, VP of OEM sales at Nutanix, sat down with Stu Miniman, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Dell World 2015 to discuss his company’s partnership with Dell and how the EMC acquisition could possibly threaten that very alliance.
Nutanix and Dell
Nutanix is a relatively new start-up that’s got a strong partnership with Dell in the VDI space. Its specialty is providing hyperscaled VDI environments for big players, such as the FBI with whom Dell has a $28 million contract with. Wallace said that other federal agencies see this implementation between Dell and Nutanix and are considering getting in on the action too.
Not only are public entities looking for hyperscaled VDI, but so are large retailers, one of which is looking to move further workloads onto Dell XC hyperconverged infrastructure powered by Nutanix software, according to Wallace.
EMC’s VMware competition
theCUBE host Stu Miniman was quick to note that VMware, Inc., one of the better-known subsidiaries of EMC, provides a hyperconverged and hypervisor to customers in direct competition with Nutanix Acropolis, which provides similar functionality. Wallace was keen to mention that this is the new Dell and that Dell is going to look to offer its customers the best possible solutions and allow them to choose.
He believes Nutanix is ahead of what VMware has, and that’s borne out by the implementation and use of its hypervisor Acropolis. It will be key to watch as Dell merges sections of EMC and how it affects its partners and alliances.

Initiated by a spontaneous phone call from a member of Dell’s enterprise product group, the partnership took only a few months to hammer out, according to Wallace. Nutanix, he explained, had quickly recognized what it stands from incorporating the hardware giant’s gear into its systems. Just a few quarters later, the startup is already reaping the fruits of the deal.
“One of the key elements of web-scale is hyperconvergenece: the fact that the compute, storage and all the elements are in a single box is critical and having the opportunity to work with Dell makes that a big chunk of our value proposition where before it was something we would, frankly, downplay,” Wallace told Vellante and Miniman.
Nutanix is delivering the benefits to customers in the form of the XC Web-Scale Converged Appliance, a Dell-branded box that hit generally availability last week and bundles its management software with the hardware maker’s PowerEdge R720xd rack server. The system comes with a standard hyperconvergence value proposition, promising to eliminate the need for IT organizations to waste time putting together and managing the individual hardware building blocks while simplifying scalability.
Wallace said that Nutanix customers typically use its appliances as a replacement for their traditional infrastructure, which sometimes bears Dell’s logo but more often tends to be equipment from competitors. “The majority of our wins is displacing legacy infrastructure with the web-scale approach, it’s a very different sale when we’re talking to the customer about how the data center should look in five years as opposed to what’s the speed of this drive or adding flash as a band-aid into a storage system,” he detailed.

Nutanix offers a highly compelling alternative to traditional hardware solutions from legacy vendors, but many of those suppliers have their own converged infrastructure solutions that offer many of the same advantage as the startup. According to Wallace, however many of his firm’s incumbent rivals have an entirely different definition of convergence that often only encompasses putting compute, storage and networking into a single chassis. Nutanix takes it a step further with its software, which makes it possible to manage the bundle as a single logical unit that can be stacked together with other systems to predictably scale an environment.
That simplicity makes the firm’s appliances – including the new XC – well-suited for a wide range of modern use cases, particularly virtual desktop infrastructure.”Not that we’re unique tailored towards VDI, but we found that because of the way we can scale IOPS and everything scales out as opposed to scaling up where you’re pushing it through two storage controllers we found a lot of success in VDI,” Wallace explained.
The partnership with Dell allows Nutanix to tap into the former’s massive sales to make its solutions available in markets it couldn’t reach as effectively on its own. And Wallace highlighted it’s not just customers who are benefits from the partners: Channel partners stand to gain as well. “We have a good number of partners that have been Nutanix channel partners that are Dell channel partners and up until now they might have had to choose one or the other,” the executive said. “Now they can work through the Dell channel program and get the best of both worlds.”

The system comes with a standard hyperconvergence value proposition, promising to eliminate the need for IT organizations to waste time putting together and managing the individual hardware building blocks while simplifying scalability.
Wallace said that Nutanix customers typically use its appliances as a replacement for their traditional infrastructure, which sometimes bears Dell’s logo but more often tends to be equipment from competitors. “The majority of our wins is displacing legacy infrastructure with the web-scale approach, it’s a very different sale when we’re talking to the customer about how the data center should look in five years as opposed to what’s the speed of this drive or adding flash as a band-aid into a storage system,” he detailed.

Nutanix offers a highly compelling alternative to traditional hardware solutions from legacy vendors, but many of those suppliers have their own converged infrastructure solutions that offer many of the same advantage as the startup. According to Wallace, however many of his firm’s incumbent rivals have an entirely different definition of convergence that often only encompasses putting compute, storage and networking into a single chassis. Nutanix takes it a step further with its software, which makes it possible to manage the bundle as a single logical unit that can be stacked together with other systems to predictably scale an environment.
That simplicity makes the firm’s appliances – including the new XC – well-suited for a wide range of modern use cases, particularly virtual desktop infrastructure.”Not that we’re unique tailored towards VDI, but we found that because of the way we can scale IOPS and everything scales out as opposed to scaling up where you’re pushing it through two storage controllers we found a lot of success in VDI,” Wallace explained.
The partnership with Dell allows Nutanix to tap into the former’s massive sales to make its solutions available in markets it couldn’t reach as effectively on its own. And Wallace highlighted it’s not just customers who are benefits from the partners: Channel partners stand to gain as well. “We have a good number of partners that have been Nutanix channel partners that are Dell channel partners and up until now they might have had to choose one or the other,” the executive said. “Now they can work through the Dell channel program and get the best of both worlds.”
