El documental nos lleva a las últimas horas trágicas del presidente chileno Salvador Allende, considerado uno de los más grandes demócratas del siglo XX. El director chileno Patricio Henriquez, ilustra magistralmente en este documental cómo las Fuerzas Armadas de Chile, dirigidas por el general Pinochet, bombardearon el Palacio Presidencial el 11 de septiembre de 1973, acabando de este modo con el presidente Allende, fruto de un proceso electoral.
Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens (Santiago, 26 de junio de 1908 -- Santiago, 11 de septiembre de 1973) fue un médico y político socialista chileno, presidente de Chile entre el 4 de noviembre de 1970 y el 11 de septiembre de 1973.
Allende fue un destacado político desde sus estudios en la Universidad de Chile. Fue sucesivamente diputado, ministro de Salubridad del gobierno de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, y senador desde 1945 hasta 1970, ejerciendo la presidencia de dicha cámara del Congreso entre 1966 y 1969.
Fue candidato a la presidencia de la República en cuatro oportunidades: en las elecciones de 1952 obtuvo un magro resultado; en 1958 alcanzó la segunda mayoría relativa tras Jorge Alessandri; en 1964 obtuvo un 38% de los votos, que no le permitieron superar a Eduardo Frei Montalva; y, finalmente, en 1970 en una reñida elección a tres bandas, obtuvo la primera mayoría relativa de un 36,6%, siendo ratificado por el Congreso Nacional. De ese modo, se convirtió en el primer presidente marxista en Occidente que accedió al poder a través de elecciones generales en un Estado de Derecho.
El gobierno de Allende, apoyado por la Unidad Popular (un conglomerado de partidos de izquierda), destacó tanto por el intento de establecer un camino no revolucionario hacia un Estado socialista usando medios legales --la vía chilena al socialismo--, como por proyectos como la nacionalización del cobre, en medio de la polarización política internacional de la Guerra Fría y de una grave crisis económica y financiera interna. La Cámara de Diputados, de mayoría opositora, aprobó un documento en agosto de 1973 en el que acusaba al gobierno de Allende de incurrir en violaciones permanentes de la constitución. Su gobierno terminó abruptamente mediante un golpe de Estado el 11 de septiembre de 1973, en el que participaron las tres ramas de las Fuerzas Armadas y el cuerpo de Carabineros, tres años antes del fin su mandato constitucional; ese mismo día, luego que el Palacio de La Moneda fuese atacado por aviones y tanques, se "suicidó".
Tras el fin de su gobierno sobrevino una dictadura militar encabezada por el general Augusto Pinochet, que duraría 17 años.

Histórico diálogo entre Fidel Castro y Salvador Allende
Por estos días la televisión pública argentina difundió El Diálogo de América, charla en noviembre de 1971 entre el líder de la Revolución cubana, Fidel Castro, y el extinto presidente Salvador Allende, durante la visita de tres semanas realizada por el primero a Chile.
Una información de Prensa Latina señala que filmado por el cineasta Álvaro Covacevich y con la participación, como entrevistador, del destacado periodista chileno y asesor personal de Allende, Augusto Olivares, El Diálogo de América fue estrenado mundialmente en París en abril de 1972 como testimonio de la lucha por el proceso chileno.
Hace referencia a que el diario argentino Página 12 recuerda que sus presentadores entonces fueron el fallecido escritor y poeta chileno Pablo Neruda y el actor Marcel Marceau.
Este documental, restaurado por la televisión pública argentina fue difundido por primera vez en el país, tras ser recuperado recientemente entre el patrimonio de Covacevich, quien luego del golpe militar de 1973 se exilió en México.
La distendida conversación tuvo lugar en los jardines de la casa presidencial, en la cual temas como la llamada Vía chilena, emprendida por la Unidad Popular (UP) para encaminar las transformaciones en el país, o la decisiva participación de la clase obrera en los procesos de cambio en una y otra sociedad, fueron analizados por ambos estadistas.
También se refirieron a los principales obstáculos enfrentados por la UP para llevar adelante su programa, y por la Revolución cubana para lograr su supervivencia y avanzar.
Estos obstáculos, precisó Allende en aquel entonces, nacen de una oligarquía con bastante experiencia que defiende muy bien sus intereses y tiene el respaldo del imperialismo.
En el caso de Cuba, Fidel Castro indicó que el principal obstáculo era de orden exterior, y mencionó al imperialismo norteamericano, que ejerce, dijo, una formidable oposición, utilizando para ello armas políticas, económicas y militares, pese a lo cual no tiene -aseguró- la más remota posibilidad de aplastar a la Revolución.

Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación.
My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [national police].
Given these facts, the only thing left for me is to say to workers: I am not going to resign!
Placed in a historic transition, I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seed which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever.
They have strength and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested neither by crime nor force. History is ours, and people make history.
Workers of my country: I want to thank you for the loyalty that you always had, the confidence that you deposited in a man who was only an interpreter of great yearnings for justice, who gave his word that he would respect the Constitution and the law and did just that. At this definitive moment, the last moment when I can address you, I wish you to take advantage of the lesson: foreign capital, imperialism, together with the reaction, created the climate in which the Armed Forces broke their tradition, the tradition taught by General Schneider and reaffirmed by Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector which will today be in their homes hoping, with foreign assistance, to retake power to continue defending their profits and their privileges.
I address, above all, the modest woman of our land, the farmer who believed in us, the worker who labored more, the mother who knew our concern for children. I address professionals of Chile, patriotic professionals, those who days ago continued working against the sedition sponsored by professional associations, class-based associations that also defended the advantages which a capitalist society grants to a few.
I address the youth, those who sang and gave us their joy and their spirit of struggle. I address the man of Chile, the worker, the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been already present for many hours -- in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to protect them. They were committed. History will judge them.
Surely Radio Magallanes will be silenced, and the calm metal instrument of my voice will no longer reach you. It does not matter. You will continue hearing it. I will always be next to you. At least my memory will be that of a man of dignity who was loyal to [inaudible] the workers.
The people must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated either.
Workers of my country, I have faith in Chile and its destiny. Other men will overcome this dark and bitter moment when treason seeks to prevail. Go forward knowing that, sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open again where free men will walk to build a better society.

(Salvador Allende Gossens; Valparaíso, 1908 - Santiago de Chile, 1973) Político chileno, líder del Partido Socialista, del que también fue cofundador en 1933. Fue presidente de Chile desde 1970 hasta el golpe de estado dirigido por el general Augusto Pinochet el 11 de septiembre de 1973, día en que falleció en el Palacio de la Moneda, que fue bombardeado por los golpistas.
En 1952, 1958 y 1962 se presentó a las elecciones presidenciales. En la primera ocasión fue temporalmente expulsado del partido por aceptar el apoyo de los comunistas, que habían sido ilegalizados, y quedó en cuarto lugar. En 1958, con el apoyo socialista y comunista, quedó en segundo lugar tras Jorge Alessandri.
En paralelo con el avance de importantes medidas sociales, el panorama político durante el gobierno de Frei Montalva fue de aumento de la polarización, incluso en el interior del Partido Democratacristiano, que sufrió importantes divisiones, así como el desligamiento de sectores de su juventud hacia posturas más vinculadas a la izquierda. Por fin, las elecciones parlamentarias de 1969 mostraron la nueva situación política del país, en tanto sus resultados apuntaron a perfilar tercios irreconciliables, en gran medida debido a la disminución del apoyo al centro político y el fortalecimiento de las opciones de izquierda y de derecha.
Esta situación se reflejaría con mayor claridad en las elecciones presidenciales de 1970, marcadas por el enfrentamiento de proyectos de sociedad antagónicos e imposibles de conciliar. En ellas resultó victoriosa la alianza de comunistas, socialistas, sectores del radicalismo y el MAPU en la llamada Unidad Popular, que estaba encabezada por Allende, con el 36, 3 % de los sufragios. El estrecho margen de diferencia con los votos recibidos por los otros dos candidatos, Jorge Alessandri por la derecha y Radomiro Tomic por la Democracia Cristiana, obligó a que la elección de Allende fuera ratificada por el congreso, en el que se enfrentó a una fuerte oposición. Por fin, el 24 de octubre de 1970, tras lograr el apoyo del Partido Demócrata Cristiano con la firma de un Estatuto de Garantías Democráticas que se incorporaría al texto constitucional, Salvador Allende fue proclamado presidente.
A pesar de ello, la Unidad Popular, una vez en el gobierno, emprendió la realización de su plan de acción, el cual ponía énfasis en la profundización de las medidas reformistas iniciadas por la administración anterior. Así, se amplió el volumen de tierras expropiadas y se inició la socialización de importantes empresas hasta entonces en manos privadas, las cuales pasaron a ser dirigidas por cooperativas de trabajadores asesorados por funcionarios proclives al Gobierno. Además, se concretó la nacionalización del cobre, sin pago de indemnizaciones a las empresas norteamericanas, lo cual significó el enfrentamiento con los Estados Unidos, quienes a partir de ese momento apoyaron abiertamente a los grupos opositores al gobierno socialista.
A pesar de esta rígida oposición, el Gobierno de Allende contó con un apoyo importante por parte de la ciudadanía, en particular de los sectores populares, que se veían directamente beneficiados. En efecto, el Estado subsidiaba gran parte de los servicios básicos, además de apoyar a organizaciones de trabajadores, campesinos y pobladores urbanos en sus demandas de participación.
Este apoyo a la presidencia de Allende se demostraría claramente en las elecciones parlamentarias de 1971 y las municipales de 1973, en las cuales los partidos de la Unidad Popular crecieron en número de votos.
La derecha y algunos sectores de la Democracia Cristiana consideraron la situación insoluble, por lo que decidieron, de forma más o menos abierta, recurrir al recurso del golpe de estado militar contra el presidente Allende. En junio de 1973 hubo un primer intento de golpe, conocido como "El Tancazo": un regimiento de blindados de la capital se alzó contra el gobierno, pero las fuerzas leales, encabezadas por Prats, lograron dominar la situación.
Finalmente, el 11 de septiembre de 1973, el general Augusto Pinochet encabezó un golpe militar, durante el cual bombardeó el palacio de la Moneda, sede del gobierno. El presidente Allende rechazó las exigencias de rendición y murió en el palacio presidencial. En 1990 su cuerpo fue exhumado de la tumba anónima en la que se hallaba, y recibió en Santiago un enterramiento formal y público.

Carlos Manuel Puebla (1917 - 1989) fue un cantautor cubano.
Conocido como el cantor de la revolución al utilizar sus habilidades musicales para la difusión de los valores de la Revolución Cubana, cantando los hechos más relevantes y siendo cronista de los cambios acaecidos desde 1959. Sus canciones siempre fueron realizadas en un lenguaje directo. Identificándose el propio Carlos como miembro del pueblo y salpicando sus composiciones de humor criollo. La creación más popular de Carlos Puebla es, sin duda, la dedicada a Ernesto "Che" Guevara, titulada Hasta siempre, y que ha sido traducida y cantada en muchos idiomas y estilos.
Nació en Manzanillo, Cuba, el 11 de septiembre de 1917 en el seno de una familia humilde. Se vio obligado a ejercer durante su niñez y juventud múltiples oficios: carpintero, mecánico, obrero azucarero y zapatero. Su temperamento le empujaba al mundo de la música. Cuando iba a la escuela no abandonaba su armónica, que hacia sonar por el camino. La clases de guitarra que recibía su hermana eran seguidas por él a escondidas y repetidas luego; ese carácter autodidacta le impulsó a aprender. Utilizando métodos de enseñanza a distancia como el para aprender a tocar la guitarra sin maestro y consultando a Pedro Estacio (director de la Banda Municipal de Conciertos de Manzanillo) y Juan García (maestro de piano) dio los primeros pasos de aprendizaje musical.
En los 30 del siglo XX sus canciones ya se emitían en la radio local de Manzanillo, la CMKM.
En este tiempo los temas de su música son de corte romántico, canciones que fueron grandes éxitos y que han pasado a formar parte del patrimonio de la música cubana. Algunas de ellas son: Quiero hablar contigo, Qué sé yo, Te vieron con él, Cuenta conmigo, Quién se lo iba a imaginar, Hay que decir adiós y Dejemos de fingir.
Poco después comenzaría a grabar sus discos; en estas piezas ya se empiezan a tratar temas sociales y reivindicativos. Canciones como: Plan de machete, Este es mi pueblo y Pobre de mi Cuba denunciaban la situación que se vivía en Cuba por aquella época sin temer a la represión.
En los años 50 se acompaña por el grupo Los Tradicionales (Santiago Martínez, Pedro Sosa y Rafael Lorenzo), publicándose sus trabajos bajo el nombre de Carlos Puebla y Sus Tradicionales. Su presencia en la radio y en la televisión nacionales se hace habitual. Aunque su escenario más querido en aquellos tiempos era el restaurante habanero de La bodeguita del medio donde interpretaba su obra sin cobrar ningún salario pero reconfortado en el buen ambiente allí existente.
El 1º de enero de 1959 el triunfo de la revolución, iconizada con la entrada de Fidel en La Habana, influiría en la vida de Carlos Puebla tanto como en la de Cuba. Carlos se convierte en cronista. La guaracha Y en eso llegó Fidel es, tal como dice el título, un cambio en su creación, en su obra. Pasa a realizar canciones que tiene como destino el difundir los valores revolucionarios y las decisiones del gobierno de los barbudos.
Canciones como La Reforma Agraria, Duro con él, Ya ganamos la pelea, Son de la alfabetización van haciendo de Carlos Puebla el embajador de la obra revolucionaria. En su canción De Cuba traigo un cantar muestra bien claro este papel de embajador que adopta.
La partida de Ernesto Guevara, a seguir la lucha revolucionaria en otras tierras, impactó a Carlos Puebla de tal forma que la misma noche en que Fidel Castro dio a conocer la carta de despedida del argentino, Carlos, sin poder dormir, compusó su obra más conocida, Hasta siempre que se convertiría en un himno homenaje al heroico guerrillero que transcendería a todos los estilos de música y a casi todas las lenguas.
Una larga enfermedad terminó con su vida un 12 de julio de 1989. Para entonces su obra musical era inmensa. Había escrito más de setenta temas donde, con su característico sentido del humor, relata los temas más comunes y transcendentes.
La enfermedad no pudo minar su sentido jovial. Su muerte se produjo en La Habana, y su tumba se encuentra en el cementerio de su ciudad de origen, Manzanillo, y en ella se puede leer:

Salvador Allende Gossens (Spanish pronunciation: [salβaˈðoɾ aˈʝende ˈɣosens]; 26 June 1908 – 11 September 1973) was a Chilean physician and politician who is generally considered the first democratically elected Marxist to become president of a country in Latin America.
Allende's involvement in Chilean political life spanned a period of nearly forty years. As a member of the Socialist Party, he was a senator, deputy and cabinet minister. He unsuccessfully ran for the presidency in the 1952, 1958, and 1964 elections. In 1970, he won the presidency in a close three-way race, formally elected by Congress as no candidate had gained a majority.
Allende adopted the policy of nationalization of industries and collectivization. On 11 September 1973 the military, citing a call by the Chilean Congress to end his presidency, staged a coup against Allende. As the armed forces surrounded La Moneda Palace, Allende gave his last speech vowing not to resign, and committed suicide thereafter. After Allende's ouster, Chile was led by a military junta, and then as a dictatorship by General Augusto Pinochet.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (Spanish: [fiˈðel ˈkastro]; born August 13, 1926) is a Cuban revolutionary and politician, having held the position of Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then President from 1976 to 2008. He also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from the party's foundation in 1961 until 2011. Politically a Marxist-Leninist, under his administration the Republic of Cuba was converted into a one-party socialist state, with industry and business being nationalized under state ownership and socialist reforms implemented in all areas of society. On the international stage, he also served as the Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1979 to 1983 and 2006 to 2008.

Este documental, restaurado por la televisión pública argentina fue difundido por primera vez en el país, tras ser recuperado recientemente entre el patrimonio de Covacevich, quien luego del golpe militar de 1973 se exilió en México. La distendida conversación tuvo lugar en los jardines de la casa presidencial, en la cual temas como la llamada Vía chilena, emprendida por la Unidad Popular (UP) para encaminar las transformaciones en el país, o la decisiva participación de la clase obrera en los procesos de cambio en una y otra sociedad, fueron analizados por ambos estadistas. También se refirieron a los principales obstáculos enfrentados por la UP para llevar adelante su programa, y por la Revolución cubana para lograr su supervivencia y avanzar. Estos obstáculos, precisó Allende en aquel entonces, nacen de una oligarquía con bastante experiencia que defiende muy bien sus intereses y tiene el respaldo del imperialismo. Last words to the nation of Salvador Allende. Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación. My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [national police]. Given these facts, the only thing left for me is to say to workers: I am not going to resign! Placed in a historic transition, I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seed which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever. They have strength and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested neither by crime nor force. History is ours, and people make history. Workers of my country: I want to thank you for the loyalty that you always had, the confidence that you deposited in a man who was only an interpreter of great yearnings for justice, who gave his word that he would respect the Constitution and the law and did just that. At this definitive moment, the last moment when I can address you, I wish you to take advantage of the lesson: foreign capital, imperialism, together with the reaction, created the climate in which the Armed Forces broke their tradition, the tradition taught by General Schneider and reaffirmed by Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector which will today be in their homes hoping, with foreign assistance, to retake power to continue defending their profits and their privileges. I address, above all, the modest woman of our land, the farmer who believed in us, the worker who labored more, the mother who knew our concern for children. I address professionals of Chile, patriotic professionals, those who days ago continued working against the sedition sponsored by professional associations, class-based associations that also defended the advantages which a capitalist society grants to a few. I address the youth, those who sang and gave us their joy and their spirit of struggle. I address the man of Chile, the worker, the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been already present for many hours -- in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to protect them. They were committed. History will judge them. Surely Radio Magallanes will be silenced, and the calm metal instrument of my voice will no longer reach you. It does not matter. You will continue hearing it. I will always be next to you. At least my memory will be that of a man of dignity who was loyal to [inaudible] the workers. The people must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated either. (Salvador Allende Gossens; Valparaíso, 1908 - Santiago de Chile, 1973) Político chileno, líder del Partido Socialista, del que también fue cofundador en 1933. Fue presidente de Chile desde 1970 hasta el golpe de estado dirigido por el general Augusto Pinochet el 11 de septiembre de 1973, día en que falleció en el Palacio de la Moneda, que fue bombardeado por los golpistas. En 1952, 1958 y 1962 se presentó a las elecciones presidenciales. En la primera ocasión fue temporalmente expulsado del partido por aceptar el apoyo de los comunistas, que habían sido ilegalizados, y quedó en cuarto lugar. En 1958, con el apoyo socialista y comunista, quedó en segundo lugar tras Jorge Alessandri. En paralelo con el avance de importantes medidas sociales, el panorama político durante el gobierno de Frei Montalva fue de aumento de la polarización, incluso en el interior del Partido Democratacristiano, que sufrió importantes divisiones, así como el desligamiento de sectores de su juventud hacia posturas más vinculadas a la izquierda. Por fin, las elecciones parlamentarias de 1969 mostraron la nueva situación política del país, en tanto sus resultados apuntaron a perfilar tercios irreconciliables, en gran medida debido a la disminución del apoyo al centro político y el fortalecimiento de las opciones de izquierda y de derecha. Esta situación se reflejaría con mayor claridad en las elecciones presidenciales de 1970, marcadas por el enfrentamiento de proyectos de sociedad antagónicos e imposibles de conciliar. En ellas resultó victoriosa la alianza de comunistas, socialistas, sectores del radicalismo y el MAPU en la llamada Unidad Popular, que estaba encabezada por Allende, con el 36, 3 % de los sufragios. El estrecho margen de diferencia con los votos recibidos por los otros dos candidatos, Jorge Alessandri por la derecha y Radomiro Tomic por la Democracia Cristiana, obligó a que la elección de Allende fuera ratificada por el congreso, en el que se enfrentó a una fuerte oposición. Por fin, el 24 de octubre de 1970, tras lograr el apoyo del Partido Demócrata Cristiano con la firma de un Estatuto de Garantías Democráticas que se incorporaría al texto constitucional, Salvador Allende fue proclamado presidente. A pesar de ello, la Unidad Popular, una vez en el gobierno, emprendió la realización de su plan de acción, el cual ponía énfasis en la profundización de las medidas reformistas iniciadas por la administración anterior. Así, se amplió el volumen de tierras expropiadas y se inició la socialización de importantes empresas hasta entonces en manos privadas, las cuales pasaron a ser dirigidas por cooperativas de trabajadores asesorados por funcionarios proclives al Gobierno. Además, se concretó la nacionalización del cobre, sin pago de indemnizaciones a las empresas norteamericanas, lo cual significó el enfrentamiento con los Estados Unidos, quienes a partir de ese momento apoyaron abiertamente a los grupos opositores al gobierno socialista. A pesar de esta rígida oposición, el Gobierno de Allende contó con un apoyo importante por parte de la ciudadanía, en particular de los sectores populares, que se veían directamente beneficiados. En efecto, el Estado subsidiaba gran parte de los servicios básicos, además de apoyar a organizaciones de trabajadores, campesinos y pobladores urbanos en sus demandas de participación. Este apoyo a la presidencia de Allende se demostraría claramente en las elecciones parlamentarias de 1971 y las municipales de 1973, en las cuales los partidos de la Unidad Popular crecieron en número de votos. La derecha y algunos sectores de la Democracia Cristiana consideraron la situación insoluble, por lo que decidieron, de forma más o menos abierta, recurrir al recurso del golpe de estado militar contra el presidente Allende. En junio de 1973 hubo un primer intento de golpe, conocido como "El Tancazo": un regimiento de blindados de la capital se alzó contra el gobierno, pero las fuerzas leales, encabezadas por Prats, lograron dominar la situación. Finalmente, el 11 de septiembre de 1973, el general Augusto Pinochet encabezó un golpe militar, durante el cual bombardeó el palacio de la Moneda, sede del gobierno. El presidente Allende rechazó las exigencias de rendición y murió en el palacio presidencial. En 1990 su cuerpo fue exhumado de la tumba anónima en la que se hallaba, y recibió en Santiago un enterramiento formal y público. -

Carlos Manuel Puebla (1917 - 1989) fue un cantautor cubano. Conocido como el cantor de la revolución al utilizar sus habilidades musicales para la difusión de los valores de la Revolución Cubana, cantando los hechos más relevantes y siendo cronista de los cambios acaecidos desde 1959. Sus canciones siempre fueron realizadas en un lenguaje directo. Identificándose el propio Carlos como miembro del pueblo y salpicando sus composiciones de humor criollo. La creación más popular de Carlos Puebla es, sin duda, la dedicada a Ernesto "Che" Guevara, titulada Hasta siempre, y que ha sido traducida y cantada en muchos idiomas y estilos. Nació en Manzanillo, Cuba, el 11 de septiembre de 1917 en el seno de una familia humilde. Se vio obligado a ejercer durante su niñez y juventud múltiples oficios: carpintero, mecánico, obrero azucarero y zapatero. Su temperamento le empujaba al mundo de la música. Cuando iba a la escuela no abandonaba su armónica, que hacia sonar por el camino. La clases de guitarra que recibía su hermana eran seguidas por él a escondidas y repetidas luego; ese carácter autodidacta le impulsó a aprender. Utilizando métodos de enseñanza a distancia como el para aprender a tocar la guitarra sin maestro y consultando a Pedro Estacio (director de la Banda Municipal de Conciertos de Manzanillo) y Juan García (maestro de piano) dio los primeros pasos de aprendizaje musical. En los 30 del siglo XX sus canciones ya se emitían en la radio local de Manzanillo, la CMKM. En este tiempo los temas de su música son de corte romántico, canciones que fueron grandes éxitos y que han pasado a formar parte del patrimonio de la música cubana. Algunas de ellas son: Quiero hablar contigo, Qué sé yo, Te vieron con él, Cuenta conmigo, Quién se lo iba a imaginar, Hay que decir adiós y Dejemos de fingir. Poco después comenzaría a grabar sus discos; en estas piezas ya se empiezan a tratar temas sociales y reivindicativos. Canciones como: Plan de machete, Este es mi pueblo y Pobre de mi Cuba denunciaban la situación que se vivía en Cuba por aquella época sin temer a la represión. En los años 50 se acompaña por el grupo Los Tradicionales (Santiago Martínez, Pedro Sosa y Rafael Lorenzo), publicándose sus trabajos bajo el nombre de Carlos Puebla y Sus Tradicionales. Su presencia en la radio y en la televisión nacionales se hace habitual. Aunque su escenario más querido en aquellos tiempos era el restaurante habanero de La bodeguita del medio donde interpretaba su obra sin cobrar ningún salario pero reconfortado en el buen ambiente allí existente. El 1º de enero de 1959 el triunfo de la revolución, iconizada con la entrada de Fidel en La Habana, influiría en la vida de Carlos Puebla tanto como en la de Cuba. Carlos se convierte en cronista. La guaracha Y en eso llegó Fidel es, tal como dice el título, un cambio en su creación, en su obra. Pasa a realizar canciones que tiene como destino el difundir los valores revolucionarios y las decisiones del gobierno de los barbudos. Canciones como La Reforma Agraria, Duro con él, Ya ganamos la pelea, Son de la alfabetización van haciendo de Carlos Puebla el embajador de la obra revolucionaria. En su canción De Cuba traigo un cantar muestra bien claro este papel de embajador que adopta. La partida de Ernesto Guevara, a seguir la lucha revolucionaria en otras tierras, impactó a Carlos Puebla de tal forma que la misma noche en que Fidel Castro dio a conocer la carta de despedida del argentino, Carlos, sin poder dormir, compusó su obra más conocida, Hasta siempre que se convertiría en un himno homenaje al heroico guerrillero que transcendería a todos los estilos de música y a casi todas las lenguas. Una larga enfermedad terminó con su vida un 12 de julio de 1989. Para entonces su obra musical era inmensa. Había escrito más de setenta temas donde, con su característico sentido del humor, relata los temas más comunes y transcendentes. La enfermedad no pudo minar su sentido jovial. Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens (Santiago, 26 de junio de 1908 -- Santiago, 11 de septiembre de 1973) fue un médico y político socialista chileno, presidente de Chile entre el 4 de noviembre de 1970 y el 11 de septiembre de 1973.
Allende fue un destacado político desde sus estudios en la Universidad de Chile. Fue sucesivamente diputado, ministro de Salubridad del gobierno de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, y senador desde 1945 hasta 1970, ejerciendo la presidencia de dicha cámara del Congreso entre 1966 y 1969.
Fue candidato a la presidencia de la República en cuatro oportunidades: en las elecciones de 1952 obtuvo un magro resultado; en 1958 alcanzó la segunda mayoría relativa tras Jorge Alessandri; en 1964 obtuvo un 38% de los votos, que no le permitieron superar a Eduardo Frei Montalva; y, finalmente, en 1970 en una reñida elección a tres bandas, obtuvo la primera mayoría relativa de un 36,6%, siendo ratificado por el Congreso Nacional. De ese modo, se convirtió en el primer presidente marxista en Occidente que accedió al poder a través de elecciones generales en un Estado de Derecho.
El gobierno de Allende, apoyado por la Unidad Popular (un conglomerado de partidos de izquierda), destacó tanto por el intento de establecer un camino no revolucionario hacia un Estado socialista usando medios legales --la vía chilena al socialismo--, como por proyectos como la nacionalización del cobre, en medio de la polarización política internacional de la Guerra Fría y de una grave crisis económica y financiera interna. La Cámara de Diputados, de mayoría opositora, aprobó un documento en agosto de 1973 en el que acusaba al gobierno de Allende de incurrir en violaciones permanentes de la constitución. Su gobierno terminó abruptamente mediante un golpe de Estado el 11 de septiembre de 1973, en el que participaron las tres ramas de las Fuerzas Armadas y el cuerpo de Carabineros, tres años antes del fin su mandato constitucional; ese mismo día, luego que el Palacio de La Moneda fuese atacado por aviones y tanques, se "suicidó".
Tras el fin de su gobierno sobrevino una dictadura militar encabezada por el general Augusto Pinochet, que duraría 17 años.

La distendida conversación tuvo lugar en los jardines de la casa presidencial, en la cual temas como la llamada Vía chilena, emprendida por la Unidad Popular (UP) para encaminar las transformaciones en el país, o la decisiva participación de la clase obrera en los procesos de cambio en una y otra sociedad, fueron analizados por ambos estadistas.
También se refirieron a los principales obstáculos enfrentados por la UP para llevar adelante su programa, y por la Revolución cubana para lograr su supervivencia y avanzar.
Estos obstáculos, precisó Allende en aquel entonces, nacen de una oligarquía con bastante experiencia que defiende muy bien sus intereses y tiene el respaldo del imperialismo.
En el caso de Cuba, Fidel Castro indicó que el principal obstáculo era de orden exterior, y mencionó al imperialismo norteamericano, que ejerce, dijo, una formidable oposición, utilizando para ello armas políticas, económicas y militares, pese a lo cual no tiene -aseguró- la más remota posibilidad de aplastar a la Revolución.

En el caso de Cuba, Fidel Castro indicó que el principal obstáculo era de orden exterior, y mencionó al imperialismo norteamericano, que ejerce, dijo, una formidable oposición, utilizando para ello armas políticas, económicas y militares, pese a lo cual no tiene -aseguró- la más remota posibilidad de aplastar a la Revolución.

Surely this will be the last opportunity for me to address you. The Air Force has bombed the towers of Radio Portales and Radio Corporación.
My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral punishment for those who have betrayed their oath: soldiers of Chile, titular commanders in chief, Admiral Merino, who has designated himself Commander of the Navy, and Mr. Mendoza, the despicable general who only yesterday pledged his fidelity and loyalty to the Government, and who also has appointed himself Chief of the Carabineros [national police].
Given these facts, the only thing left for me is to say to workers: I am not going to resign!
Placed in a historic transition, I will pay for loyalty to the people with my life. And I say to them that I am certain that the seed which we have planted in the good conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans will not be shriveled forever.
They have strength and will be able to dominate us, but social processes can be arrested neither by crime nor force. History is ours, and people make history.
Workers of my country: I want to thank you for the loyalty that you always had, the confidence that you deposited in a man who was only an interpreter of great yearnings for justice, who gave his word that he would respect the Constitution and the law and did just that. At this definitive moment, the last moment when I can address you, I wish you to take advantage of the lesson: foreign capital, imperialism, together with the reaction, created the climate in which the Armed Forces broke their tradition, the tradition taught by General Schneider and reaffirmed by Commander Araya, victims of the same social sector which will today be in their homes hoping, with foreign assistance, to retake power to continue defending their profits and their privileges.
I address, above all, the modest woman of our land, the farmer who believed in us, the worker who labored more, the mother who knew our concern for children. I address professionals of Chile, patriotic professionals, those who days ago continued working against the sedition sponsored by professional associations, class-based associations that also defended the advantages which a capitalist society grants to a few.
I address the youth, those who sang and gave us their joy and their spirit of struggle. I address the man of Chile, the worker, the farmer, the intellectual, those who will be persecuted, because in our country fascism has been already present for many hours -- in terrorist attacks, blowing up the bridges, cutting the railroad tracks, destroying the oil and gas pipelines, in the face of the silence of those who had the obligation to protect them. They were committed. History will judge them.
Surely Radio Magallanes will be silenced, and the calm metal instrument of my voice will no longer reach you. It does not matter. You will continue hearing it. I will always be next to you. At least my memory will be that of a man of dignity who was loyal to [inaudible] the workers.
The people must defend themselves, but they must not sacrifice themselves. The people must not let themselves be destroyed or riddled with bullets, but they cannot be humiliated either.
Workers of my country, I have faith in Chile and its destiny. Other men will overcome this dark and bitter moment when treason seeks to prevail. Go forward knowing that, sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open again where free men will walk to build a better society.

(Salvador Allende Gossens; Valparaíso, 1908 - Santiago de Chile, 1973) Político chileno, líder del Partido Socialista, del que también fue cofundador en 1933. Fue presidente de Chile desde 1970 hasta el golpe de estado dirigido por el general Augusto Pinochet el 11 de septiembre de 1973, día en que falleció en el Palacio de la Moneda, que fue bombardeado por los golpistas.
En 1952, 1958 y 1962 se presentó a las elecciones presidenciales. En la primera ocasión fue temporalmente expulsado del partido por aceptar el apoyo de los comunistas, que habían sido ilegalizados, y quedó en cuarto lugar. En 1958, con el apoyo socialista y comunista, quedó en segundo lugar tras Jorge Alessandri.
En paralelo con el avance de importantes medidas sociales, el panorama político durante el gobierno de Frei Montalva fue de aumento de la polarización, incluso en el interior del Partido Democratacristiano, que sufrió importantes divisiones, así como el desligamiento de sectores de su juventud hacia posturas más vinculadas a la izquierda. Por fin, las elecciones parlamentarias de 1969 mostraron la nueva situación política del país, en tanto sus resultados apuntaron a perfilar tercios irreconciliables, en gran medida debido a la disminución del apoyo al centro político y el fortalecimiento de las opciones de izquierda y de derecha.
Esta situación se reflejaría con mayor claridad en las elecciones presidenciales de 1970, marcadas por el enfrentamiento de proyectos de sociedad antagónicos e imposibles de conciliar. En ellas resultó victoriosa la alianza de comunistas, socialistas, sectores del radicalismo y el MAPU en la llamada Unidad Popular, que estaba encabezada por Allende, con el 36, 3 % de los sufragios. El estrecho margen de diferencia con los votos recibidos por los otros dos candidatos, Jorge Alessandri por la derecha y Radomiro Tomic por la Democracia Cristiana, obligó a que la elección de Allende fuera ratificada por el congreso, en el que se enfrentó a una fuerte oposición. Por fin, el 24 de octubre de 1970, tras lograr el apoyo del Partido Demócrata Cristiano con la firma de un Estatuto de Garantías Democráticas que se incorporaría al texto constitucional, Salvador Allende fue proclamado presidente.
A pesar de ello, la Unidad Popular, una vez en el gobierno, emprendió la realización de su plan de acción, el cual ponía énfasis en la profundización de las medidas reformistas iniciadas por la administración anterior. Así, se amplió el volumen de tierras expropiadas y se inició la socialización de importantes empresas hasta entonces en manos privadas, las cuales pasaron a ser dirigidas por cooperativas de trabajadores asesorados por funcionarios proclives al Gobierno. Además, se concretó la nacionalización del cobre, sin pago de indemnizaciones a las empresas norteamericanas, lo cual significó el enfrentamiento con los Estados Unidos, quienes a partir de ese momento apoyaron abiertamente a los grupos opositores al gobierno socialista.
A pesar de esta rígida oposición, el Gobierno de Allende contó con un apoyo importante por parte de la ciudadanía, en particular de los sectores populares, que se veían directamente beneficiados. En efecto, el Estado subsidiaba gran parte de los servicios básicos, además de apoyar a organizaciones de trabajadores, campesinos y pobladores urbanos en sus demandas de participación.
Este apoyo a la presidencia de Allende se demostraría claramente en las elecciones parlamentarias de 1971 y las municipales de 1973, en las cuales los partidos de la Unidad Popular crecieron en número de votos.
La derecha y algunos sectores de la Democracia Cristiana consideraron la situación insoluble, por lo que decidieron, de forma más o menos abierta, recurrir al recurso del golpe de estado militar contra el presidente Allende. En junio de 1973 hubo un primer intento de golpe, conocido como "El Tancazo": un regimiento de blindados de la capital se alzó contra el gobierno, pero las fuerzas leales, encabezadas por Prats, lograron dominar la situación.
Finalmente, el 11 de septiembre de 1973, el general Augusto Pinochet encabezó un golpe militar, durante el cual bombardeó el palacio de la Moneda, sede del gobierno. El presidente Allende rechazó las exigencias de rendición y murió en el palacio presidencial. En 1990 su cuerpo fue exhumado de la tumba anónima en la que se hallaba, y recibió en Santiago un enterramiento formal y público.

Carlos Manuel Puebla (1917 - 1989) fue un cantautor cubano.
Conocido como el cantor de la revolución al utilizar sus habilidades musicales para la difusión de los valores de la Revolución Cubana, cantando los hechos más relevantes y siendo cronista de los cambios acaecidos desde 1959. Sus canciones siempre fueron realizadas en un lenguaje directo. Identificándose el propio Carlos como miembro del pueblo y salpicando sus composiciones de humor criollo. La creación más popular de Carlos Puebla es, sin duda, la dedicada a Ernesto "Che" Guevara, titulada Hasta siempre, y que ha sido traducida y cantada en muchos idiomas y estilos.
Nació en Manzanillo, Cuba, el 11 de septiembre de 1917 en el seno de una familia humilde. Se vio obligado a ejercer durante su niñez y juventud múltiples oficios: carpintero, mecánico, obrero azucarero y zapatero. Su temperamento le empujaba al mundo de la música. Cuando iba a la escuela no abandonaba su armónica, que hacia sonar por el camino. La clases de guitarra que recibía su hermana eran seguidas por él a escondidas y repetidas luego; ese carácter autodidacta le impulsó a aprender. Utilizando métodos de enseñanza a distancia como el para aprender a tocar la guitarra sin maestro y consultando a Pedro Estacio (director de la Banda Municipal de Conciertos de Manzanillo) y Juan García (maestro de piano) dio los primeros pasos de aprendizaje musical.
En los 30 del siglo XX sus canciones ya se emitían en la radio local de Manzanillo, la CMKM.
En este tiempo los temas de su música son de corte romántico, canciones que fueron grandes éxitos y que han pasado a formar parte del patrimonio de la música cubana. Algunas de ellas son: Quiero hablar contigo, Qué sé yo, Te vieron con él, Cuenta conmigo, Quién se lo iba a imaginar, Hay que decir adiós y Dejemos de fingir.
Poco después comenzaría a grabar sus discos; en estas piezas ya se empiezan a tratar temas sociales y reivindicativos. Canciones como: Plan de machete, Este es mi pueblo y Pobre de mi Cuba denunciaban la situación que se vivía en Cuba por aquella época sin temer a la represión.
En los años 50 se acompaña por el grupo Los Tradicionales (Santiago Martínez, Pedro Sosa y Rafael Lorenzo), publicándose sus trabajos bajo el nombre de Carlos Puebla y Sus Tradicionales. Su presencia en la radio y en la televisión nacionales se hace habitual. Aunque su escenario más querido en aquellos tiempos era el restaurante habanero de La bodeguita del medio donde interpretaba su obra sin cobrar ningún salario pero reconfortado en el buen ambiente allí existente.
El 1º de enero de 1959 el triunfo de la revolución, iconizada con la entrada de Fidel en La Habana, influiría en la vida de Carlos Puebla tanto como en la de Cuba. Carlos se convierte en cronista. La guaracha Y en eso llegó Fidel es, tal como dice el título, un cambio en su creación, en su obra. Pasa a realizar canciones que tiene como destino el difundir los valores revolucionarios y las decisiones del gobierno de los barbudos.
Canciones como La Reforma Agraria, Duro con él, Ya ganamos la pelea, Son de la alfabetización van haciendo de Carlos Puebla el embajador de la obra revolucionaria. En su canción De Cuba traigo un cantar muestra bien claro este papel de embajador que adopta.
La partida de Ernesto Guevara, a seguir la lucha revolucionaria en otras tierras, impactó a Carlos Puebla de tal forma que la misma noche en que Fidel Castro dio a conocer la carta de despedida del argentino, Carlos, sin poder dormir, compusó su obra más conocida, Hasta siempre que se convertiría en un himno homenaje al heroico guerrillero que transcendería a todos los estilos de música y a casi todas las lenguas.
Una larga enfermedad terminó con su vida un 12 de julio de 1989. Para entonces su obra musical era inmensa. Había escrito más de setenta temas donde, con su característico sentido del humor, relata los temas más comunes y transcendentes.
La enfermedad no pudo minar su sentido jovial. Su muerte se produjo en La Habana, y su tumba se encuentra en el cementerio de su ciudad de origen, Manzanillo, y en ella se puede leer:

Sus canciones siempre fueron realizadas en un lenguaje directo. Identificándose el propio Carlos como miembro del pueblo y salpicando sus composiciones de humor criollo. La creación más popular de Carlos Puebla es, sin duda, la dedicada a Ernesto "Che" Guevara, titulada Hasta siempre, y que ha sido traducida y cantada en muchos idiomas y estilos.
Nació en Manzanillo, Cuba, el 11 de septiembre de 1917 en el seno de una familia humilde. Se vio obligado a ejercer durante su niñez y juventud múltiples oficios: carpintero, mecánico, obrero azucarero y zapatero. Su temperamento le empujaba al mundo de la música. Cuando iba a la escuela no abandonaba su armónica, que hacia sonar por el camino. La clases de guitarra que recibía su hermana eran seguidas por él a escondidas y repetidas luego; ese carácter autodidacta le impulsó a aprender. Utilizando métodos de enseñanza a distancia como el para aprender a tocar la guitarra sin maestro y consultando a Pedro Estacio (director de la Banda Municipal de Conciertos de Manzanillo) y Juan García (maestro de piano) dio los primeros pasos de aprendizaje musical.
En los 30 del siglo XX sus canciones ya se emitían en la radio local de Manzanillo, la CMKM.
En este tiempo los temas de su música son de corte romántico, canciones que fueron grandes éxitos y que han pasado a formar parte del patrimonio de la música cubana. Algunas de ellas son: Quiero hablar contigo, Qué sé yo, Te vieron con él, Cuenta conmigo, Quién se lo iba a imaginar, Hay que decir adiós y Dejemos de fingir.
Poco después comenzaría a grabar sus discos; en estas piezas ya se empiezan a tratar temas sociales y reivindicativos. Canciones como: Plan de machete, Este es mi pueblo y Pobre de mi Cuba denunciaban la situación que se vivía en Cuba por aquella época sin temer a la represión.
En los años 50 se acompaña por el grupo Los Tradicionales (Santiago Martínez, Pedro Sosa y Rafael Lorenzo), publicándose sus trabajos bajo el nombre de Carlos Puebla y Sus Tradicionales. Su presencia en la radio y en la televisión nacionales se hace habitual. Aunque su escenario más querido en aquellos tiempos era el restaurante habanero de La bodeguita del medio donde interpretaba su obra sin cobrar ningún salario pero reconfortado en el buen ambiente allí existente.
El 1º de enero de 1959 el triunfo de la revolución, iconizada con la entrada de Fidel en La Habana, influiría en la vida de Carlos Puebla tanto como en la de Cuba. Carlos se convierte en cronista. La guaracha Y en eso llegó Fidel es, tal como dice el título, un cambio en su creación, en su obra. Pasa a realizar canciones que tiene como destino el difundir los valores revolucionarios y las decisiones del gobierno de los barbudos.
Canciones como La Reforma Agraria, Duro con él, Ya ganamos la pelea, Son de la alfabetización van haciendo de Carlos Puebla el embajador de la obra revolucionaria. En su canción De Cuba traigo un cantar muestra bien claro este papel de embajador que adopta.
La partida de Ernesto Guevara, a seguir la lucha revolucionaria en otras tierras, impactó a Carlos Puebla de tal forma que la misma noche en que Fidel Castro dio a conocer la carta de despedida del argentino, Carlos, sin poder dormir, compusó su obra más conocida, Hasta siempre que se convertiría en un himno homenaje al heroico guerrillero que transcendería a todos los estilos de música y a casi todas las lenguas.
Una larga enfermedad terminó con su vida un 12 de julio de 1989. Para entonces su obra musical era inmensa. Había escrito más de setenta temas donde, con su característico sentido del humor, relata los temas más comunes y transcendentes.
La enfermedad no pudo minar su sentido jovial. Su muerte se produjo en La Habana, y su tumba se encuentra en el cementerio de su ciudad de origen, Manzanillo, y en ella se puede leer:

Phil had just returned from South America. So Vic asked Phil about his travels in recent years. Phil covers the globe with his commentary on Vietnam and Cambodia, and his report on his most recent travels to Chile, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, Thailand, the Phillipines, and Philadelphia. Phil describes the struggle going on in Chile with the democratic election of Salvador Allende, a socialist who nationalized the copper mines, a great national asset of Chile that came to be owned by ITT Anaconda. This interview was in May 1973, which is 4 months before the coup by General Pinochet. Unknown to us at the time, ITT and the CIA were working with the Chilean military to plan the attack on the elected Chilean government. The coup came on September 11, 1973. Phil cites the assassination of the head of the Chilean Armed Forces (General René Schneider Chereau on October 25, 1970, in Santiago) as a “false flag” operation to make it seem like the newly elected socialist government was attacking the Chilean military. (Note: General Carlos Prats Gonzáles was killed on September 30, 1974, in Buenos Aires). He considered the movie “State of Siege” to be an accurate portrayal of the revolutionary movements in South America, particularly in regard to tactics of the Tupamaros in Uruguay. Then he tells the story of being at a university in Uruguay when it was surrounded by the army and shots were exchanged. He says and Dave Ifshin were arrested and taken to a prison for questioning and some physical abuse. He suspects that Interpol tried to have the two American tourists deported to the new military dictatorship in Bolivia from the Buenes Aires, Argentina airport. Instead they were able to fly to Peru. We discuss the role of universities in South America. Phil said that folk singers were able to make it on the juke box and radio in South America, but the songs that do are mostly romantic subjects rather than political ones. Phil talks about the CIA financing a spiritual movement in Chile called "Joven Poder" (Youth Power) to drain youth from the class conscious revolutionary struggle in Chile. (There may have been more to this interview since the reel tape ends without a definitive conclusion).
Note: Phil does not mention Chilean folk singer Victor Jara. Yet we later learned that he traveled and sang with Victor Jara to the copper miners and university students. Phil organized "Friends of Chile" to do a concert on May 9, 1974 at the Felt Forum in New York City titled "An Evening With Salvador Allende". Bob Dylan was the big draw. Also on the bill were Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Dave Van Ronk, Dennis Hopper, Mike Love & Dennis Wilson, and Melani. This video ends with the last part of "Broadside Balladeer", a song tribute to Phil Ochs by Vic Sadot. It tells Phil's story while citing the titles to many of his songs. It was in written in 1977, a year after Phil committed suicide on April 9, 1976 at the house of his sister Sonny Ochs in Far Rockaway, New York. He had gone through a period of alcoholic disorientation and was diagnosed "manic depressive". Using rare archival footage, family photos, interviews with Allende's friends, professional colleagues, his daughters and other relatives as well as UP militants, workers, journalists, his personal secretary and Edward Korry, former U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Salvador Allende portrays the life, times and political formation of the Valparaiso-born doctor who was active in Socialist Party politics as a senator and who ran unsuccessfully for president three times before finally being elected in 1970.
The film focuses on the tumultuous three years following Allende's election, and the declaration of his socialist program, "la via Chilena," which nationalized large-scale industries and began an agrarian reform program. Former U.S. Ambassador Korry provides an insider's account of President Nixon and Henry Kissinger's determination to thwart Allende, but he is unrepentant about the CIA-sponsored coup that overthrew the Chilean government. In a lively debate, former UP militants argue over Allende's failure to defend the government, especially his failure to arm and mobilize a people's militia as a counterforce to the army, in the period leading up to the coupe.
Salvador Allende also reveals little-known, more intimate aspects of the man, with moving personal reminiscences of his sense of humor, his remarkable energy, personal charisma and popular political appeal. Through archival footage and eyewitness and participant accounts, the film re-creates the military assault on the Moneda, Allende's last radio broadcast to the people of Chile, and rare photos and footage documenting the final actions of Allende and his staff on that day, including his suicide.
