Number 10:
The Vacuum Gang
Starting off the countdown of the Top 10 Most Successful Thieves in History, The Vacuum Gang. These thieves have been drilling holes and vacuuming out cash since
2006. They’ve successfully retrieved over $1 million dollars from supermarket safes across
France.
Number 9:
Baker Street Burglary
The Baker Street Burglary occurred in
London in
1971. A group of thieves constructed tunnels and dug their way into the
Lloyd’s bank. They got away with over $60 million dollars. The movie
Bank Job starring
Jason Statham is based on these brazen thieves, the 9th Most Successful Thieves in History.
Number 8:
Albert Spaggiari
Spaggiari dug a tunnel into the vault of the bank,
Societe Generale Bank. stealing over $64 million dollars in currency and jewelry. Spaggiari was eventually apprehended, however, during his trial almost like straight out of a movie he lept from the courthouse window and landed on a motorcycle escaping justice until his death.
Number 7:
School of
Turin
The 7th Most Successful Thieves in History were known as
The School of Turin. In
February 2003, after the bank closed, the thieves meticulously disabled all of the high-tech alarm systems. The thieves stole millions of dollars in diamonds and other precious jewels.
Number 6:
Colton Harris-Moore
Colton is the youngest on the countdown, crash-landing his way to #6. Known as the
Barefoot Bandit because of the chalk footprints that have been found at the scene of his crimes. He has over
100 robberies on his record and has stolen dozens of planes and powerboats. The curious thing is no one knows when or how Colton learned to fly a plane.
Number 5:
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
In
1990, 2 men disguised as police officers gained access to the museum where they stole $
500 million dollars in artwork. The museum has left up the empty frames and are offering a large reward for their return. The thieves have never been apprehended.
Number 4:
Paris Museum of Modern Art
This one isn’t as much a matter of intelligence or skill as it is luck. The thief smashed a window at the museum, walked in, took over $
200 million dollars in artwork, and then walked out. The alarm wasn’t functioning properly. There was nothing stopping this thief.
Identity is still unknown and artwork is still missing.
Number 3:
Carl Gugasian
Carl’s career spanned 30 years netting him over $2 million dollars, Carl would burst into banks before the start of the weekend, at closing time. Carl was caught and is serving a 17 year prison sentence for 5 bank robberies because there was no evidence from the other 45 armed robberies he had admitted too!
Number 2:
The Pink Panthers
Coming in at #2 are The Pink Panthers. Over 200 members worldwide they are flashy, wear intricate disguises, drive getaway speed boats, have crashed a pair of limos into a storefront grabbing handfuls of jewelry, and have committed dozens more over-the-top offenses.
They have made off with almost $1 billion dollars--and counting in total loot.

The Central Bank of
Iraq was the target of the world’s most successful robbery on
March 18th,
2003. The thieves were none other than the sons of the
Iraqi dictator,
Saddam Hussein. Qusay and
Uday Hussein successfully drove away from the
Central Bank of Iraq with truckloads of $100 bills totaling a staggering $1 billion dollars!
