The film starts with the arrival of Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after vanquishing Ravan in Lanka. Rama is now the king of Ayodhya. Under his rule the people are happy and prosperous. Just when everything seems to be going fine, a comment by a washer man makes Rama to send Sita away into the forest. From here the real story of Sri Rama Rajyam begins. Sita is given shelter by Sage Valmiki. He keeps her identity a secret and looks after her as his own daughter. Sita gives birth to Lava and Kusha. Quotes:
Ravan: [to Sita] My day begins only when I see your face. But you? You won't even look at me. Do you not see I'm starving for your love?
Ram: This battle between you and I shall be the end of it all! Soldiers of Lanka, take heed! Your King Ravana, whom you consider to be a symbol of eternal power, watch him die at the hands of a mere mortal!::Ravan: Rama, tell me where your conceit comes from! Your boastful lips will never speak such words again! Brave soldiers of Lanka! You know only too well who's the mightiest of all here! Come on, Rama! Fight!::Ram: So be it, Ravana! Fight!
Ravan: This lady is so noble that even looking at you makes her impure!
[Bharata learns his mother caused Rama's exile]::Bharata: What have you done? You depraved heartless woman! [pushes Kaikeyi to the floor]
[Bharata meets Rama in the forest]::Ram: What? What are you saying, Bharata? Our father is dead?::Bharata: [sadly] Brother, I share your grief.::Ram: [kneels down in sorrow] Oh Father, Father! Forgive this poor Rama! Forgive your son!::Bharata: Rama, I appeal to you, absolve me of my mother's sin! Come back to Ayodhya, and accept the Kingdom which is yours by right!::Ram: [solemnly] Bharata, what your mother has done is not in question here. Remember, the great Emperor Dasaratha has commanded us: you to rule the Kingdom, and I to live in these forests for 14 years. It is our duty to abide by our father's wishes whether we like it or not.::Bharata: You have commanded me, it is enough. But one thing's certain-I will not accept the kingdom for myself, but for you. [kneels, takes Rama's sandals and raises them in his hands]::Bharata: Please bless this brother of yours to rule the Kingdom with strength and courage. [Rama agrees and recites a mantra, and the slippers glow with a light]::Bharata: I will rule for the next 14 years, but till you return.
Jambavaan: [to Hanuman] When you were a boy, believing the new-born sun to be a golden fruit, you once flew after it, meaning to swallow it up! You had great powers, but you did not know how to use them! [laughs]::Jambavaan: The world was afraid of you, and so you were put under a spell which sealed your powers. The time has now come for me to unseal these hidden powers! Only you can go across the sea with your divine power! Only you can reach Lanka and find Mother Sita! Om! Om!
Vibheeshana: May you rest in peace, brother Ravana.
Lakshman: [to Surpanakha] I speak with your interests at heart. I am only second to Rama, and I don't think you are the kind to settle for second best.
Sugreeva: For the sake of a friend, a man should be ready to give up his wealth, his goods, and if need be life itself. I will live by this dharma and help Rama in every way.

Plot: This special-effects laden film is based upon an episode from the Ramayana. Indrajit, son of Ravan, initiates an attack on Rama (Mane) and Lakshmana (Kulkarni) in which they are captured by Mahi (Kelkar). They escape with the assistance of Rama's disciple, the monkey-god Hanuman (Manajirao). The narrative foregrounds Chandrasena (Tarkhad), wife of Mahi, who reveres Rama but disapproves of the bacchanalian orgies and the celebration of liquor that is the norm in his kingdom. She helps resolve the stalemate of the battle when Mahi (who can duplicate himself and his dead soldiers) proves invincible, by revealing the secret formula that will kill her husband. In addition to the usual flying figures and magic arrows mandatory for a Ramayana mythological, there is an effective scene of a gigantic Hanuman picking up a miniaturized human figure.
